The little name-forgetting kerfluffle in the comments recently made me take a new look at a new comment plugin that I’ve been keeping in the back of my mind to try on the site. It has a lot of invisible plumbing-level advantages for the site. And maybe also some visible ones.
I’m about to turn it on and re-configure things. You will notice. I don’t know if it will be better, worse, or just different, so consider this an experiment and use the comments on this post to say what you think and / or note any kind of showstoppers.
Here’s one thing that is different, and I think, better. To add an image to a comment, just paste in the link. No “click here” button, no “[img]”, just paste the link to the image into the comment and it should render as an image.
If this new plumbing totally sucks, or causes unforeseen problems, we’ll go back to what we had before. If it has some promise but some things need tweaking, we can try tweaking. It has a lot of settings to customize.
Give it a try for a while and then comment below.
EDIT: Forgot to mention another thing I wanted to call out about how the new plumbing works. The comments are now loaded into the page via AJAX (javascript) without having to re-load the page (this is one of the nice things from a server load point of view). If you leave a page with comments open in your browser, it should update with any new comments automatically every 30 seconds. New ones you haven’t seen yet have a light green background until you mouse over them.
EDIT 2: Evaluating and tweaking on the fly. The “live reload” feature is putting some load on the server, so I changed it from every 30 seconds to every minute to see if that makes it less of a burden. If not, may have to turn that feature off.
EDIT 3: There was some wonkiness with video embedding being kind of hit and miss. Admin plunked down a few $ for an add-on to the commenting plugin that makes it work better for videos and it seems like it is working better now. Please comment if still seeing any issues embedding video.
EDIT 4: As far as I can tell, the issues with embedding youtube, vimeo, etc videos were solved by the addition of the add-on. There are a lot of video services out there that don’t support embedding and there is nothing we can do about that.
Some people are still apparently having problems embedding images from some image hosting sites. I explained what I think that problem is in a comment below, re-posted here:
What happens when you paste in a URL that ends in .png, .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, etc is that the commenting plugin just wraps it with the html necessary to display it. That’s exactly the same thing that the old comment image button did as well. The only difference is that you had to press a button with the old one and this new one just auto-detects image URLs and does the conversion automatically.
The problem you are having is that the services you are trying to use, like imgur, are trying to monetize what they are doing so instead of giving you a real, direct link to an image, they are giving you something that looks like a real direct link to an image but when it hits their server, instead of sending back the image, they are sending back a bunch of html that puts their logo and links to their page around the image. This is to get people to click on the image and go to their site where they can show ads and make money. That fuckery (which they are doing) is what is causing the problem.
I don’t know whether postimages will go the same way or not, but for now, they are not fucking with the direct link – it sends back an image. I don’t know where you are going when you try to use postimages, but this is where I uploaded the image above: https://postimages.org/
Postimages seems to work correctly for me. If you want to upload an image to a service and get a direct link that you can paste into a comment here, try them.
EDIT 5: It looks like the live reload feature is putting a lot of extra load on the server. I’m going to let it go for a couple days and see if that settles down. If not, I’ll try turning it off and seeing if the new commenting plugin still seems worthwhile without that.
EDIT 6: I’ve tweaked a few things this morning (8/8) to try to get site subscriptions working more reliably and to make the new commenting system play nicely with the site’s automated spam suppression.
I hope that everyone who is subscribed by email to the site will get emails for new posts (after “Apple, Google, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter Subvert the US Constitution, Free Speech, and American Liberty”). Let me know if still not receiving them after that post.
The spam catching thing will take a while to shake out, so give it some time and let’s see if it settles down. Nobody is being moderated. Just machines doing what we programmed them to do and not being able to do what we want them to do perfectly.
EDIT 7: I think that many problems people are having are a consequence of their browsing having cached versions of the javascript code used by the new commenting system before I made some changes to it. If that’s right, the solution is to clear that old code out of the browser cache. Here is a page with instructions on how to clear your browser cache for different browsers and different versions of them: Refresh Your Cache.
UPDATE (8/9): I know that some people are still having some problems posting comments sometimes. As far as I can tell, this mainly seems to be happening when trying to reply to another comment (and not when using the main comment form to post a “top-level” comment).
What’s happening is that the spam protection is bouncing these reply comments. I am trying to figure out why it is happening just to some people and not to others. Unfortunately, I can’t make it happen for me so I can’t see in detail what is happening when it happens. I just see that it happened in the log of the spam protection.
I’ve reached out to the authors of the new commenting system to see if they can help figure it out.
Aside from whatever I (and they) can figure out, try clearing your browser cache and cookies (Refresh Your Cache) and if you are using an old version of your browser, upgrade to the latest available (that’s good advice period – not just for this issue. Keep your browser up to date both for security and functionality).
In case anyone is paying attention, I’ve turned off the live update feature for the time being because I think it has been causing a large usage of the server resources.
Update (8/10): Still no word from the authors of the comment plugin about the issue I reported. I’ve turned off some of the anti-spam measures that I think are getting in the way of people being able to reply to other people’s comments. Let’s see if that fixes the problem without opening the spam floodgates…

As mentioned in my issue report, the problem only happens with some people, sometimes. I can’t reproduce it myself. Here is what it looks like in the WPBruiser log when it happens:

Is adding a video done the same way as adding an image?
let’s see…
I guess that would be a “no”. I’ll look into this.
Ok, i guess the video thing does work like the images, except you have to reload the page to see the video; it doesn’t seem to work when the comment is loaded via AJAX.
Not the case anymore. Videos should load right with or without a page reload now.

I have turned the comment spam protection back on, so please try again.
not all change is good. font size is to small, preferred the old style
LOL. Not all change is bad either. I tried to make the font size exactly the same as it was before. It appears that way for me. What browser are you using to read the site? Desktop, laptop, or phone?
The EDIT feature is nice
When I post it says comment awaiting moderation but I don’t see an edit button?
That is weird. There shouldn’t be any need for any moderation. I don’t see your comments as being flagged as needing moderation. Don’t know what that’s about.
The upvote and downvote counts on previous threads are all reset to zero. It also won’t let me post a comment without submitting an email address.
Correct. We had to abandon the old up / down votes. That was actually supplied by a really obnoxious plugin which I have been wanting to get rid of for years. It was invasive and bad for privacy, but it was the only one that worked the way it did. This new plugin is much better in that respect.
You may not remember originally putting it in there, but the site has always required an email address to post a comment. The first time you commented, you put something in that field which may or may not be a real email address. Whatever you put in there determines the little avatar next to your name.
EDIT: Sorry – I was wrong about the email thing. I think it is fixed now so you don’t have to put one in to post.
Well, I don’t do many pictures but I do love my videos. Let’s see how this thing works.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ve_ylvALnN0
After you paste in a video link it might just show the link and not the video (that’s what happens for me). Reload the page and then you’ll see the video.
This might be different from one person’s browser to another.
Yeah it worked that way for me too. I think I might come to like the faggy blue/green color too.
I think this is fixed now with a new add-on we bought…
Looks fine to me. Thanks for keeping the site up to date.
Oh, that’s a change- new comments added to the top instead of bottom?
At first on top when it loads via AJAX, then they go to the bottom when you reload the page. Don’t like that. I’ll see if I can do anything about it.
Hmmm. There is now an option to sort it the way you want to. If you look at the top of the thread of comments there is a sorting option that looks like: “newest, oldest, most voted”. You can pick whichever way you like. That might affect whether it changes order between AJAX and a page reload…
And the fun begins.
The man with no name is the man.
I can’t upvote my own comment. That sucks. Sometimes that is the only upvote I get.
I am trying a test hit, fails will come back in 12 hours and see if it works then, enjoy the day all.
Well, you got 3 thumbs up so gave you a down thumb, just testing that it all works properly! The new fusion center programming seems to work, will try links/photos later.
Hmmmm….,my little dude/avatar changed for this above comment, will try a test and see if me or system.
My fault, little dude is back ,system seems to work.
So now I can’t just leave a comment with a sign-in name, I have to type in an email address or a website?
Sorry to see the old comment anonymity go.
Otherwise it seems to be working, it’s ok.
(-testing-)
And thanks for asking for feedback.
Always required an email. You may have forgotten putting it in initially and you may have typed something bogus in there, but the site has always required something in that email field in order to make a comment.
Not trying to be know-it-all or contrary, but I’ve never filled out the email field to comment on this website.
Previously I just typed a comment, put in my user name, and hit send. Just that. The same thing that caused the comments here to not be attributed to the right poster, but just showed up as ‘anonymous’. Type the comment, hit send, no other sign in required.
This is no longer possible.
It’s ok. Admin’s website, he can run it any way he sees fit.
Sorry, you’re right and I was wrong. I was looking at something that told me one thing and now that I look closer, I see something else. It seems like the new plugin is making you put in an email even though the site’s settings don’t require that. I’ll see if there is a way around it. In the meantime you can put in something fake if you want to.
I think I fixed this now so you don’t have to put in a name or an email.
Using my phone, I had to re-enter my name or be anonymous. Let’s see what happens.
Seems that only my laptop will save my name.
But my laptop never shows anyone’s avatar. Weird.
However it does pop down my name and email if I touch those fields. That never happened before. That’s helpful
Nevermind. Now it’s saved my name and email.
I been on the sidelines, marveling at the discussions here. I test the new venue.

I’ll try and play.
From a desktop on Windows 10, using Gaggle Chrome, with StartPage as the default browser, but if bookmarked, it’s only editable under the Chrome settings protocol.
Still, By far, the most user friendly of the 3 platforms I use to browse The Platform.
The laptop w/ an older version of Billie’s software is having major issues with the “Aw Snap” pop up, after crunching the ad data for too long, and reloading the page is demanded way too often.
Using StartPage as the default browser there, and may have the settings for privacy screwed up.
Can’t seem to clear cookies on the StartPage settings menu.
Also lately on that platform the side bar links on the right side of page have disappeared on a TBP post. It’s a mess.
On the mobile, G-Chrome is the browser, and the pop up ads at the bottom, on Android – Verizon, routinely block the view of page content, and frequently won’t allow to X out of the ad, to make it go away.
To get past articles, and read comments, much scrolling is required to get past Admin’s ads for click bait monies.
Ditto, for accessing archives.
OK with that. But, I’ll still try and send you another donation, Quinny.
Will attempt to post a good video, for laughs, my default reply, cuz, you know, Thumbs.
I tried that using the ‘link’ option at top of my reply, and it loaded above this sentence, to the body of the reply.
If it fails, it’s an ad for Volkwagon SUV towing a horse trailer. Funny. Sound Up.
Lastly, Thanks, to TMWNN, for the tweaks, improvements, and suggestions for cleaning up the user experience.
Cheers.
Whoa. just noticed it’s mandatory to post an email address. Never had to do that before. Dislike.
Edit / Add…vid link to You Boob didn’t post, after reviewing…I’ll add the link to the body, under this sentence, as
how previously was successful. Here goes…

Testing. Now I have the edit button. Using bogus email changes avatar. Should not be a problem navigating the new system. Thanks MWNN for keeping this place viable
But still have 2 comments above “awaiting moderation”. FYI
don’t use the link button to post videos. Just paste the video url into your comment.
Got nothing to say about the thirty three billion video ads – they choke my browser too when I turn off my ad blocker…
The pop-ups make the search bar inaccessible. I’m looking for Maggie’s beach pic. Wish we had an index for particular commentators so I could search her comments. Of course, that would make my own comments traceable. Maybe it’s not a good thing to get everything we wish for.

Glad to see your gifs work, Nkit. What would we do without them?
This looks like the WPDISCUZ plugin, am I correct?
Geek alert. Correct.
Any previous good / bad experience with it?
Been using it for years with no problem on multiple sites. It’s gotten better each update. In the early days the default “styling” was a bit crude – but much better now. If you’re super-skilled with CSS you can really customize it – but I can’t be bothered
When I first looked at it a couple years ago, there were a lot of rough edges and a couple showstoppers. But I have been keeping it on my radar since then and it seems like it has really improved and the authors are regularly updating it and making it better.
I did some small amount of style tweaking to get it into the general ballpark of what things looked like before. I can do more, but want to wait to see if anything crops up that makes it unworkable first.
Let’s see if we can embed posts in comments…
Nice!
Just paste a link to a post from a compatible site on a line by itself and it will look all purty and pro.
The votes used to be on the right. For 10 fucken years my eyes have gone to the bottom RIGHT. Now they are on the left? This is bullshit. My eyes don’t want to go there. Please move them back to the right.
The puke green color is very faggy. But even worse is that the font is much to LIGHT. Can’t you make it black? Or, larger, or bold?
Speaking of fonts … the font color when entering a new post is LIGHT GREY. Again, this is complete total bullshit. It is hard to see. Please make it BLACK.
WTF is /code and /spoiler, li, etc. Oh, I know … useless clutter.
It is VERY VERY nice that leaving a comment is now at the top of the page. I always felt is was beyond stupid to force folks to scroll through all comments just to post.
Not being able to vote for yourself seems like heavy handed government interference. I don’t see why that was taken away.
The rest of the new stuff is nice.
I’m with Stucky and I’m glad he brought it up, what is up with the (code and spoiler) option, what does it do?
`I still don’t get it? [spoiler title=”Clueless in Seattle “]
I’m shopping for new monikers, notice mine are all different?
Your with Stucky? He didn’t invite me, his longtime amigo.
Doing that properly will take a little coding. I’ll do it when I have some time if TBP keeps this new commenting system.
I did make the font for entering new comments darker. Hoping that unfucks your life.
here is some code.
Don’t worry about moving it to the right. Really. Kristalmighty, I figured it would be EASY. #MoveVotingRight …. something like that.
Thanks for darkening. It really does unfuck my life. Seriously, my eyes ain’t what they used to be. Dad was right about #ChokingChickenOften
I’m too fucken lazy to try shit out. BUT I LOVE THAT SPOILER THINGEE!!! Thanks.
LOL

Somebody gib me an upvote, it’s a wise observation from a genuine white guy. Pleeeeeze!
Anyway, what looks like fooling around is actually a series of secret tests, erasing stuff, posting images, deleting comments, changing monikers, etc. I’m not scared of change, Boomers invented change.
Can’t see it, Nkit.
TMWNN,
why is my last comment “awaiting moderation?”
I don’t know why that seems to happen sometimes. I can’t see it anywhere now, though I did see it for a second. As far as I can tell, we don’t have any kind of moderation stuff turned on so I don’t know where it’s coming from yet. I’ll keep looking into it.
I’ll try it again
That tinypic.com service is doing something screwy with links to images on the site. That’s why those images are not showing up.
Imgur seems broken as well.
Yah, all those image hosting services are trying to monetize what they are doing so they play games with what looks like a standard image URL and it screws up the cool image embedding code in this comment plugin.
I’d keep shopping for a new place to park images that gives you a real live link to a plain old image.
That’s using Postimages.
The comment plugin appears to be remapping the direct image link I used, to something else – stripping off the file format suffex, and substituting something it shouldn’t.
There may be a setting in the comment plugin config to make it stop doing this.
There were a few comments in the spam filter.
Yeah, that’s what happened.
The automatic spam filter was “triggered” on those URL only posts and they went into the spam folder. Then Admin un-spammed them.

Got it. It defaulted to requiring the author name to be at least 3 characters. I set it to 1.

OK, trying again.
Nope. Won’t work.
Set it to zero, if possible, might disable it.
Not AC
works for me (AC Not AC). I think you might need to clear out your browser cache.
Trying again.
So, that works now.
When I tried to post a comment I’m asked (I guess) to fill out my user name, address and website. Why? What website? I’m confused. Are there sign in instructions I missed? Yes, I am a computer dope.
You can fill that stuff in, or not fill it in. You don’t have to.
No I can’t. When I hit the post tab I’m told to fill in the other fields.
Do you know how to flush the cache of your browser? Originally, it made you fill that stuff in, but I changed it and now it shouldn’t. It’s possible that your browser has a cached copy of the original javascript code from before the changes I made. If that’s it, then flushing the cache should fix it.

Tried to post a photo link twice on Hollywood Rob’s thread and got “comment awaiting moderation”. If that gig could be shut off, that would be greeeaaat…
You just have to have it right away, don’t you? You would not have survived the 90’s, there was dial-up and waiting, waiting…
It’s been hours and the photo I posted still has not showed up on HR’S thread? Evidently, “comment awaiting moderation” is akin to censorship? It hurts, but I’ve been hurt before.
Well, I guess I’ll give it a try and see how it goes.
Posting straight text seems to work as before for me no problemo.

postimg.org won’t upload anything. completely broken.
direct hotlink test
so I can hotlink, but not rehost on imgur. Weird.
I think the comment input filter is where the imgur problem is. It pattern matches the imgur direct image link, intentionally mangles it, and then posts the mangled link.
I took a screenshot of part of your message above and uploaded it to postimages. Now I am pasting the “Direct link” here:

“instead of sending back the image, they are sending back a bunch of html that puts their logo and links to their page around the image.”
Well, that sucks.
postimages.org is where I went. I tried to use the ‘upload by url’ link at the top of their page, and it returned an error every time I tried to use it on the test image I posted.
Imgur worked with the previous comment system. I can go directly to the images in my browser, and see them. I can post them on other sites. They just don’t work here, now. Weird.

Not all video services support embedding. Like image hosting services, a lot of them have a business model of getting you onto their site so they can show you ads to make money. That doesn’t work for embedded videos so they don’t support embedding.
I’m not a person that likes change, but after reading comments on other articles and commenting myself on a few, I’m already use to the changes and I’m OK with them.
Now if I can post a YouTube video of my favorite group, the Beatles, featuring my favorite singer ever, John Lennon, then I’ll say congratulations and a job well done.
Congratulations and a job well done!
Please define “articles” – I don’t know if you mean what I call a “post” which is the thing at the top of this page titled “New TBP Comments Plumbing” or what I call a “comment” which is what you wrote above and I am writing here.
Subscribing to comment threads has changed with the new plugin and looks like this:
(I haven’t actually tested that yet, so not sure if it actually works…)
If you want to subscribe to the whole site and get emails when new posts are made, it’s in the sidebar on the right and looks like this:
Greetings Admin. I, like KeyserSusie, am no longer receiving email notifications of new articles posted. Tried to re-enter my address in the above “subscribe” location and was informed I was already a subscriber. Will hope you get the kinks worked out shortly.
Thank you!
Try praying to yer Gawd. I ain’t having any problems cuz Odin has my back, in a non-homo, let’s just be friends, kinda way…

The top spot awaits your article.
