Unless you are in a union or work for the government

Unless you boss is a white male, and you’re some protected class. Then you can say whatever what you want and it’s protected speech. Your boss probably deserved it then for being alive, maybe consevative, and taking a good job from a minority. Else he’s just a hater! Right?

I have considered doing just that considering I am just doing part time bench repairs for a small company at a very low wage yet the mission creep of extended responsibilities and accountabilities far out weigh the pay . The company owner now feels it is standard practice to call or text me regularly on my personal cell phone even when I am off concerning different issues . I had to draw the line when he gave my phone number to several customers . I explained to the customer politely that I am on the job Monday thru Friday 9am to 1 pm call the business phone numbers then to speak to me regarding work related issues . Do not call me on my personal phone and please erase my number .
The. I informed the owner if he wanted me on call with a cell phone he would have to supply the phone and pay me for the time I am conversing with customers at a minimum of a quarter of an hour per call or more .
This is one of those part time gigs that is going nowhere and fills the gap for a few things for a couple years till my wife can retire . My days of eating drinking and sleeping concerning any business affairs other than my personal ones are over .

How many of you in the world of work have had the following experiences?
Managers and companies will take advantage of those of us who have a strong work ethic, are on time, concentrate on the job at hand and “don’t make waves”.
I was part of an organization that provided highly sophisticated technical services in a shop section with approximately eight people. Out of the eight, there were two of us who “went the extra mile”. The manager always depended on us two, even if the other six could have completed the tasks that were assigned to us.
There were many times, when the “anointed six” were sitting on their asses, doing nothing or reading newspapers or magazines while us two were keeping the operation running.
There were many times, when I was researching a solution to a problem, reading technical literature in the shop, when the manager would come in, observe me, an ask me “what I am doing in the shop?” while ignoring the other six. This manager’s attitude and pinpointing bothered us two.
I finally had enough of the BS and learned to avoid the shop entirely. I set up a remote “office” in another part of the building where I could do my research on my own, unknown to the manager. I also compromised my “work ethic” by “taking my time” and doing what I felt like doing. Future tasks were completed on MY schedule, or when I felt like completing them.
Despite the abuse, I always kept a pleasant demeanor, telling the managers what they wanted to hear while “doing my own thing”.
I left for “greener pastures” and never looked back.

I experienced a lot of the same things you did and reacted the same way. After 8 years of loyal faithful service I was unjustly fired. I was 63 at the time and had not planned on retiring until I was 66 or 70. But after a lifetime of working at horrible mismanaged businesses with horrible bosses and horrible coworkers I decided I had had enough. So I retired early. I don’t regret it at all. One of the best decisions I have made in my life. After I left that awefull company, my stress level went down 75%!!!

I faced the exact same thing! Retired @ 64 due to being fed up with crappy management. Like you my stress level dropped and now my hypertension is easier to manage.

I could achieve much more but I don’t. Most of times, promotion is not based on performance. Why bother?

I remember what former Soviets said:” They pretend to pay us, we pretend to work”.

USA is half the way there.

Funny how that shit goes with the poor boss syndrome. I remember working back in the 70’s for a guy who was great when the place was busy. Then when it slowed down after Xmas he decided to charge everyone $25/mth for the coffee we were drinking on the job.
My guess is he lost thousands in productivity (everyone that I knew there slowed right down and no staying the extra time for free anymore) due to that move. I stayed a few more months and moved on. That move poisoned the entire team.

If you happen to be self-employed, you won’t have a problem. There’s a certain freedom you get when you realize that you actually work for you. The boss is just a reporting official like the DMV dude and the traffic cop. You give them what they want so they can fuck off and you carry on doing your thing, making sure you hit all the marks, troubleshoot and improve on process. It’s like writing, the sweat and personal satisfaction is the payoff.
