The Self-Genocide of the West

Guest Post by Paul Craig Roberts

Stephen Cohen and I are branded “Russian dupes” and “Putin agents,” because we object to the highly orchestrated and false portrayal of Russia as a threat to the West, a portrayal that is leading to war. The purpose of this orchestration is to prevent President Trump or any future president from reducing the dangerous tensions between nuclear powers that have accumulated since the Clinton regime. The military/security complex has resurrected its Cold War enemy so necessary for its outsized budget and power and intends to keep Russia as The Enemy.

The Democrats have an interest in the villification of Russia as “Russiagate” explains Hillary’s loss of the 2016 Presidential election and gives Democrats hope of removing President Trump from office. The media lacks independence, knowledge, and integrity and is the tool used by the military/security complex to control explanations, a prostitution of the media that has made the term “presstitutes” an accurate description. As strategic and Russian studies are largely funded by the military/security complex, the universities are also complicit in the march toward nuclear war. Republicans are as dependent as Democrats on funding from the military/security complex and the Israel Lobby.

All of this self-serving is driving America and its vassals to war with Russia, which might also mean with China. The war would be nuclear and be the end of the West, an act of self-genocide. The US national security establishment is so crazed that Trump’s efforts to get off the war track and onto a peace track are characterized as treason and a threat to US national security. See for example: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/23/opinion/trump-mattis-syria-afghanistan.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fopinion

The Russians are aware that the accusations and demonization that they experience are fabrications. They no longer see the problem as one of misunderstandings that diplomacy can overcome. What they see now is the West preparing its populations for war. It is this perception for which the West is solely responsible that makes the situation today far more dangerous than it ever was during the long Cold War.

In his just published book, War With Russia? (reviewed here: https://www.paulcraigroberts.org/2018/12/22/if-truth-cannot-prevail-over-material-agendas-we-are-doomed/ ), Stephen Cohen documents the creation of the “Russian threat” that serves a few material interests at the expense of life on earth.

In the article below, Cohen asks if it is more important to impeach Trump than to avoid nuclear war.

Do Russiagate Promoters Prefer Impeaching Trump to Avoiding War With Russia?

The new Cold War is not a mere replica of its 40-year predecessor, which the world survived. In vital ways, it is more dangerous, more fraught with actual war, as illustrated by events in 2018, among them:

The militarization of the new Cold War intensified, with direct or proxy US-Russian military confrontations in the Baltic region, Ukraine, and Syria; the onset of another nuclear arms race with both sides in quest of more “usable” weapons; mounting, but entirely unsubstantiated, claims by influential Cold War lobbies, such as the Atlantic Council, that Moscow is contemplating an invasion of Europe; and the growing influence of Moscow’s own “hawks.” The previous Cold War was also highly militarized, but never directly on Russia’s own borders, as is this one, from the small nations of Eastern Europe to Ukraine, a process that continued to unfold in 2018.

Russiagate—allegations that President Trump is strongly influenced by or even under the sway of the Kremlin, for which there remains no actual evidence—continued to escalate as a dangerous and unprecedented factor in the new Cold War. What began as suggestions that the Kremlin had “meddled” in the 2016 US presidential election grew into mainstream insinuations, even assertions, that the Kremlin put Trump in the White House. The result has been to all but shackle Trump as a crisis-negotiator with Russian President Putin. Thus, for attending a July summit meeting with Putin in Helsinki—during which Trump defended the legitimacy of his own presidency—he was widely denounced by mainstream US media and politicians as having committed “treason.” And twice subsequently Trump was compelled to cancel scheduled meetings with Putin. Americans may reasonably ask whether the politicians, journalists, and organizations that assail Trump for the same kind of summit diplomacy practiced by every president since Eisenhower actually prefer trying to impeach Trump to avoiding war with Russia.

The same question can be asked of major mainstream media outlets that have virtually abandoned the reasonably balanced and fact-based reporting and commentary they practiced during the latter stages of the preceding Cold War. In 2018, for example, their nonfactual, surreal allegation that “Putin’s Russia attacked American democracy” in 2016 became an orthodox dogma and the pivot of their Russiagate and new Cold War narrative. Also unlike during the preceding Cold War, they continued to exclude dissenting, alternative reporting, perspectives, and opinions. Still more, these media outlets persist in relying heavily on former intelligence chiefs as sources and commentators, even though the role of these intel officials in the origins of the Russiagate narrative now seems clear. A striking example of media malpractice was coverage of the maritime conflict between Ukrainian and Russian gunboats on November 25, in the Kerch straits between the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea. All empirical evidence available, as well as Ukrainian President Poroshenko’s desperate need to bolster his chances for reelection in March 2019, strongly indicated that this was a deliberate provocation by Kiev. But the US mainstream media portrayed it instead as yet another instance of “Putin’s aggression.” Thus was a dangerous US-Russian proxy war fundamentally misrepresented to the American public.

In large part due to such media malpractice, and despite the escalating dangers in US-Russian relations, in 2018 there continued to be no significant anti–Cold War opposition anywhere in mainstream American political life—not in Congress, the major political parties, think tanks, or on college campuses, only a very few individual dissenters. Accordingly, the policy of détente with Russia, or what Trump has repeatedly called “cooperation with Russia,” still found no significant supporters in mainstream politics, even though it was the policy of other Republican presidents, notably Eisenhower, Nixon, and Reagan. Trump has tried, but he has been thwarted, repeatedly again in 2018.

Meanwhile, the charge that Russia “attacked American democracy” and continues to do so might best be applied to Russiagate promoters themselves. Their allegations have undermined the America presidency as an institution and cast doubt on US elections. By criminalizing both “contacts with Russia” and proposals for “better relations,” and by threatening to weed out a capacious and nebulous body of “disinformation” in US media, they have considerably diminished the vaunted American marketplace of free speech and ideas. Also under growing assault are traditional concepts of US political justice, which, at least based on what is known in regard to Russia, have been abused in the cases of Gen. Michael Flynn and, in Soviet-like fashion, of Maria Butina. At worst, this young Russian woman seems to have been an undeclared (but candidly open) advocate of “better relations” and an ardent proponent of her own country. For this, something long pursued by young Americans in Russia as well, she was held for months in solitary confinement until she confessed—that is, entered a plea. And this in a nation that has long officially “promoted” democracy abroad.

Finally, while US political and media elites remained obsessed with the fictions of Russiagate—which increasingly appears to be Russiagate without Russia and instead mostly tax-fraud-gate and sex-gate—post–Soviet Russia continued its remarkable rise as a diplomatic great power, primarily, though not only, in the East, as documented recently in three highly
informed publications far from and scarcely noted by the US political-media establishment. Meanwhile, Washington’s primary base of allies in world affairs, the European Union, continued its slide into self-inflicted, ever-deepening crisis.

Being in my 60’s and growing up in a different era I would never have bought into this even a decade ago but am now convinced of it. We are all being played for the enrichment of a special group of elitist that crosses party lines.

Bob, It is much wider, much deeper, and much worse than “…a special group of elitist (‘s) that crosses party lines.” It is a group of elitist that spans the globe from China through Europe, encompasses Russia, and all across the Americas. Every nation with any significant development is run by a cooperative and self serving crew of autocratic thieves. Those nations too disorganized for development are or will soon be completely dominated for the removal of whatever resources they have by the aforementioned crowd. The people that think of themselves as the “smart set” in media, academia, and business are all in because they want to have a seat at the New World Order table. They do not realize that their utility and value is awarded, and will be entirely and capriciously removed as soon as it is convenient for the powers-that-be to remove it.

So we are lied to by our “leaders” and lied to by the people reporting on what our “leaders” are doing and NOT doing, and encouraged and required to profess belief in things manifestly untrue. We are being forced to deny our or sentinent existence. They are just getting started. Soon (a few years) they will really have the means to begin using hard force on the few malcontents left as the last of the surveillance equipment and fencing is installed and brought on-line. It is a bi-partisan effort here in the US, but it is MUCH larger than that.

The “mainstream media” has always been dishonest and has been controlled by “certain” interests…

I was a young person when President Kennedy was assassinated, remembering it well, even seeing some of the news anchors of the day smirking and smiling during their television news presentations of the assassination. I thought to myself, even back then, how much prior knowledge did THEY have about that pivotal event of the time? Being a voracious reader (to this very day), I purchased and read “The Warren Commission Report on Assassinations” when it came out, and almost instantly thought to myself “what a crock of sh!t”. Even at that early age, I was able to see through the BS.

I had no doubt that the CIA or other deep state agencies had control of the American mainstream media and DID twist news stories in order to promote their agenda, even back then.

Forward to the deliberate Israeli act of war against the USA with the attack on the USS Liberty (GTR-5) on June 8, 1967. Lyndon Johnson’s plan (false flag) for the USS Liberty was to have all sailors perish and blame it on Egypt, giving Israel and its proxy, the USA, an excuse to go into Egypt. When his plan failed, he was forced to feign an excuse that it was a mistake and misidentification, letting the Israelis off the hook as he “did not want to embarrass an ally”. The fix was in. The investigation involving John McCain’s daddy was insurance that it would be whiitewashed. The remaining crew was warned not to discuss the “incident” under pain of courts-martial. The crew was then scattered throughout the Navy. It is interesting to note that the USS Liberty (GTR-5) is the most decorated ship and crew in the Navy.

Normally, the 50th anniversary of any notable historical event warrants a mention from the mainstream media. There was NOT ONE PEEP out of the press on the 50th anniversary (June 8, 2017) of the Israeli attack on the USS Liberty. This is proof of outside influences on the mainstream media, evident on the news blackout of the 50th anniversary of this act of war by our “ally”, Israel. THAT, my friends is telling.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy made a lot of enemies.
His demise made it nearly impossible to derail the deep state.
Kennedy wanted to reign in Israel, by demanding that it disclose the extent of its nuclear program at Dimona as well as holding Israel accountable for the Palestinian situation . He was very aware of the hold that Israel had on our politicians, with organizations such as AIPAC. It is very likely that the Israelis (Mossad) had a part in his assassination. He also was wary of the Federal Reserve and signed an executive order for Congress to print its own money-United States Notes (red seal), which are still found in circulation today. Kennedy would have done much to reign in the military industrial complex by defusing the Cold War and minimize troop presence in Vietnam, as he was amenable to talks with the Soviets.
Kennedy’s stance on civil-rights would have taken a more nuanced approached, allowing change to come, albeit, more slowly.

Compare Kennedy with Lyndon Johnson, who despised him. From the “Great Society” and “Model Cities” programs to the deliberate attack on the USS Liberty (GTR-5) on June 8, 1967, in which he absolved Israel of any blame for this murderous attack as he “did not want to embarrass an ally”, Johnson was furious that his false flag operation with Israel was not successful and whitewashed the investigation along with Admiral John S. McCain (yeah, Senator John McCain’s daddy) into this act of war by Israel.

Johnson pushed through civil-rights legislation for purely partisan political reasons. He actually was quoted as saying, in his own words ”These Negroes, they’re getting pretty uppity these days and that’s a problem for us since they’ve got something now they never had before, the political pull to back up their uppityness. Now we’ve got to do something about this, we’ve got to give them a little something, just enough to quiet them down, not enough to make a difference. For if we don’t move at all, then their allies will line up against us and there’ll be no way of stopping them, we’ll lose the filibuster and there’ll be no way of putting a brake on all sorts of wild legislation. It’ll be Reconstruction all over again”.

Wild !!! You guys are right on target about what’s really going on behind the scenes. We have been betrayed ,lied to and sabotaged so many times it’s hard to know where to start. You can’t trust a damn thing any of those bastards say or tell us. Alot of war Mongolian types worship at the feet of Albert Pike who had just about any and all of the degrees in Freemasonry that exist layed out a plan for One world government and this called for 3 world wars. He said the last one would be between Israel and the Arabs which will drag in the rest of the world . He has been right on target so far. Also many if not most calling for war with Russia are Jews . They are the ones up front but behind the curtain you see White men. You would be surprised what you can find out about These treasonous son of bitches . It’s like they are telling to our faces what they are going to do. Scary as hell its self .

Hi BB,

Agree with you on your theme. Unfortunately for hard proof, Pike’s letter to Manzini, which you reference, can apparently only actually be traced back to the very early 1950s. Still useful for seeing later parts of a plan, but being apparently after many of the events in the letter and by implication not by Pike, not as conclusive. Pike, though, certainly would have been aware of the theme, plan and the way things are going. Of course, as we both know, both the old and new testaments give some pretty strong indications. Reading these prophecies in the light of our current awareness is mind boggling, not to mention proof that there is more to this world then meets than eye. Frustrating how so many do not see it, the great deception and all of that!!

For you lovers of TRUTH about American History, you will absolutely love this just released book; “Presidents of War”.

It’s expensive — $35 — fortunately, my library already had a copy. Riveting, highly informative, and fascinating from page 1 through page 700. Two things I want to mention as it pertains to this article;

1. We need to stop being nostalgic for the good old times when the press supposedly “told the truth”. Although in some eras the lies were less frequent than others, the overall fact of the matter is that the press has ALWAYS attempted to sway the American public by whatever means necessary to whatever views THEY held — including outright lies and bullshit — from the War of 1812 right to this very day. Folks, there has never been a truly truthful and independent press in American history.

2. All this hand-wringing about Mad Dog Mathis being fired. Bwahahahaha!!! These crybabies have NO IDEA about American Presidential history. Firing Military Generals is a legacy of virtually EVERY President who has engaged America in conflict.

When PCR is on, he is really on! Brilliant article. As always, I sum up our “military doctrine” thusly; a trillion dollar military budget REQUIRES a trillion dollar enemy. Hence, Russia. I should probably add a second plank to what I perceive as our military doctrine; “What does Israel want us to do?”

Folks, it’s a G-R-E-A-T book. Amazon link below ….

The mainstream media has always been dishonest. From the “yellow journalism” of the late 1800s and early 1900s to today’s “fake news”, journalism has shown its true (communist) roots.
From the lies about the Spanish-American war to the New York Times’ walter duranty hiding the truth about and denying the artificially engineered and forced communist “famine” in the Ukraine, to the lies about the 1968 Viet Nam communist Tet offensive (a military victory for the South Vietnamese and American troops) reported by walter cronkite as a military defeat, cronkite and his ilk were successful in prolonging the Viet Nam war for years, giving “aid and comfort” to the enemy, who bragged about being supported by the U S media.
Look at NBCs doctoring of GMC truck gas tanks, rigging them to explode, and the deliberate mischaracterization of George Zimmerman’s conversation withe the 911 dispatcher, deleting a key phrase, as well as showing Trayvon Martin as a 12-year-old cherub rather than his more recent “thug” facebook picture.
The media has become a “fifth column” of the government and is not to be trusted. The CIA has had its hooks in the media since the 1950s. In fact, Hollywood script writers were paid to insert anti-drug messages in their scripts during the “drug hysteria” period of the 1980s through 2000s. Today, we have “crisis actors” embedded in our government and media, the same “crisis actors” who keep showing up, being used in every (fake) “crisis”. The mainstream media keeps parroting these impostors, thinking that we are stupid, not being able to see through their lies and deceptions.
To our advantage, we now have the internet, which gives the ordinary citizen the ability to see through the deceptions and lies, and the capability to be real “journalists”, quite often getting and reporting the story TRUTHFULLY before the mainstream media.
In fact, there are calls by “mainstream media” to “license” journalists, in an attempt to keep these “citizen journalists” out…twenty years ago, any journalist suggesting such a scheme would have been thrown out, but nowadays…who knows?

Thanks Stucky, I will check out the book

To your point on the age old corruption:

“There is no such a thing in America as an independent press, unless it is out in country towns. You are all slaves. You know it, and I know it. There is not one of you who dares to express an honest opinion. If you expressed it, you would know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid $150 for keeping honest opinions out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for doing similar things. If I should allow honest opinions to be printed in one issue of my paper, I would be like Othello before twenty-four hours: my occupation would be gone. The man who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the street hunting for another job. The business of a New York journalist is to distort the truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to villify, to fawn at the feet of Mammon, and to sell his country and his race for his daily bread, or for what is about the same — his salary. You know this, and I know it; and what foolery to be toasting an “Independent Press”! We are the tools and vassals of rich men behind the scenes. We are jumping-jacks. They pull the string and we dance. Our time, our talents, our lives, our possibilities, are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes.”

– John Swinton (1829 – 1901) was a Scottish-American journalist, newspaper publisher, and orator. (Citation: E. J. Schellhouse: The New Republic. politicians are just useful idiots. Generational wealth, is forever. inbred elites buy and sell policy, politicians, and governments. and illusion of participation is maintained.

Control the Narrative – We are aggressively manipulated to “think” and “feel” about everything with repeated deceitful narratives and images. US MSM manufactures “support” or “disapproval” for whatever the oligarchy choses. YOUR thoughts and feelings on any given topic are largely NOT your own.

Monopolistic global corporations are the only genuine threat to the world. Centralization of all wealth and power in the hands of the shadow government. it truly can be described as a James Bond Spectre like villain. It is this “new world order” they so desperately want to impose on us cattle, and to get there, they are willing to kill of large swaths of humanity, it has always been this way, and it will always be, until these 1% are identified, and culled.

they are setting the stage right now, by increasing the tempo of chaos, both globally and locally, sowing division and hatred, so that war will be the only way forward.

My only hope is that the actual commanders who control the launch buttons will pause and think about who is telling them to kill the world, and that maybe it’s not such a good idea. Maybe these elite SOBs are not part of the solution, but actually the entire problem.
