Some bullshit actually.

Massholechusetts (and some other states I’m sure) still requires a full $12/hr pay if wages+tips don’t add up to $12/hr, yet it is shown as below minimum wage state.

Law of unintended consequences.

Raise minimum wage? Owner costs go up, labor force reduced, prices for goods rise to try and stay profitable.
To say nothing of the reduction of quality / quantity of product delivered, after adjusting to the new accounting rules & regs.

Then, patron traffic slows or dies.
Dining out becomes unaffordable.
Closure of establishments, job losses, less options available.

Re: cashless transaction trend, it’s the skim-scam money grubbing State, in their quest to net a pound of flesh from all participants. Follow the money.
Thus, the plunder continues in vampire squid fashion.

Opt out. Eat at home. Cook.
You’ll eat healthier, but only slightly less expensively, as rising costs hit grocery suppliers as well.

Who burns, at the restaurants?
Servers, the few that remain.
When a simple lunch costs $20, cuz new minimum wage increases, most patrons, if not opting out, will certainly tip servers less.
Currently, I still tip in cash, at a % worthy of our server’s courtesy, friendliness, work ethic, and patron appreciation.
Good ones who know the game, do very well for themselves, regardless their base hourly wage.

But here again, the FED policies of stealth inflation via fractional reserve bunking, are the base root of the problem.
Yet social justice warriors think pruning select branches improves things.
It doesn’t.
A pruned pickerbush grows back larger and stronger.
Some water sucking weeds need to be uprooted with an axe, and thrown onto a fire, so productive growth of good plants can thrive.

To tip or not to tip ? Tipping encourages service people to enthusiastically tend to patrons needs in a polite manor .
Paying less than a legally required minimum wage because of the the type of business flys in the face of fair and equal treatment in the marketplace . Tipping , why should I subsidize a businesses wages to employees by tipping am I not doing that by spending money in their place of business to start with .
Both sides have some merit , good restaurants with good location and clientele make it many do not such is life but if minimum wage breaks the bank perhaps before you invest in a food service business you need to do better check of demographics !

Tipping is and always has been a terribly inefficient, confusing, and unfair method of paying waiters/waitresses and other occupations that expect it (cab drivers, hair dressers, etc.). It would be much simpler and fairer if employers just raised the price of their products by the equivalent amount of the average tip, and then increased the wages of their employees correspondingly. Tips should be reserved for those rare cases of truly exceptional service, as they once were, instead of just being unconditionally expected. However that will never happen because we are too culturally conditioned to tipping.

All of you down-voters aren’t very bright unless perhaps you misunderstood my use of the word “fair”. I probably should have been a little more specific. When I said “fair”, I didn’t mean fair in that all employees would get equal pay, which would be manifestly UNFAIR. What I meant was that the employer would pay each employee based on his/her value to the company, which is the way all non-tipping occupation employees get paid now (if you neglect the distortions that are caused by minimum-wage laws, unions, and other distortions). If you down-voted because you misunderstood that, then I am sorry for not being more specific. If you down-vote this comment then I feel sorry for you.

Another government tax grab. A lot of tips are cash which slips into the pocket, unaccounted to the tax man. No way to hide it if it becomes wages.

Anyone who receives tips knows the percentage to declare to keep the IRS from auditing. But do away with tips and there’s nowhere to hide.

So actual pay for tip-based jobs will go down, not up. Unless of course you suck at your job in which case you’ll probably receive a raise. That’s exactly the thing we want to incent, right?

Just pay people the wage you want and reflect that on the menu price. If I feel it’s worth it I’ll patronize your establishment, if not I’ll pass. The culture of tipping is a shadow fee. Sure you can stiff the server but if they’re relying on that as a portion of income and you don’t disclose your intentions up front you’re no better than the manager who doesn’t tell the staff there is no bonus this year. So that meal isn’t $20, it’s $20 + tax + tip. That can add significant cost to a meal. Lately I’m seeing a service charge on receipts for “employee benefits” which is another shadow fee, just like tipping. F that noise.

On top of that my state does not allow a tip credit. Min wage is on its way to $15 (phased in) so a full time server is taking in $30k+ tips. Knowing servers the tips are often way in excess of the base wage. You can make a very decent living as a server if you work in a higher end establishment with big check averages. Not that I’m against people making good money. If you want your servers pulling down $100k annual (many do) just lets see it reflected on the menu.

My buddy owns a bar/restaurant in St Paul. His two main weekend bartenders have been there ~13 years each. They each make about $500 per Friday and Saturday night in tips. Yup, $1,000 / week for working two nights. They only work Fri and Sat nights and each hold down a 9-5 gig, too. They don’t need these dumb cunts trying to get minimum wage raised. Anyone who says the proprietor should just factor in the higher wage into prices and that tips shouldn’t exist has never tried to get a drink at a crowded bar. Tips WILL be paid. Wages should reflect that reality.

This guy is full of BS. That waitress supposedly makes $50K/year? OK fine – but why didn’t he tell us what the average waitress makes ($20K/year)? That means that 50% of waitresses make LESS than that. This fact was conveniently left out. At the end he contends that minimum wage should be eliminated altogether and that these waitresses and business owners could then “negotiate” whatever “deal” makes the most sense.

Such a relief to eat out in Europe, where tipping is not a thing. The servers are professionals who are paid a living wage, not part-time giggers with wide range of capabilities and -worse- attitudes.

I hate eating out in the US, where the servers are overbearing in trying to “connect” with me and make fake friends so that I feel guilty if I don’t tip big. Things like touching me (this has been shown to increase tips)… I have even had a server sit down at the table with us!! I’m not a person who’s very formal, but I really got a classist bug up my butt at that point: “the help” is not invited to my table, so sorry!

I hate the tipping culture.. just another way for employers to off-load costs.

It’s been shown that customers either regularly tip poorly or tip well, little to do with the actual service but more to do with their own inclinations.

There had been a great web site called “bitterwaitress.com” that was fun to peruse.. gave a peek into the waitron world. Unsurprisingly, they think 20% is the minimum one should ever tip!

There is zero tipping in Japan. In fact if you leave a tip, it is considered many time as insulting… and many times to owner of the establishment will follow you down the street to give you your tip back.

I find the whole concept of tipping as a form a extortion.

Here’s a tip for all you people who “live by tips” –go get a better education and find a better job.
