(Y F) = (F (Y F))

I might take a stab at the maff if you please define “Y” and “F”. Or perhaps just one of the variables. Make it a wee more challenging. Thank you.

Damn, you’re creative enough to be a coder, for sure.

See I was thinking “F” “U” at least looks more identifiable therefore better.

But if “F” “Y” as you suggest, is more comprehensible to the I.T. community then I’m O.K. with it.

Well, if I remember correctly, that equation is true only when F is equal to 1.

Therefore, the real question is Y?

Y is always about money and power.

I’ve been developing software for 48 years. I don’t even know how to respond to this phrase. It’s really not about writing the code – it’s about understanding the problem, and delivering a system to will solve the problem. Additionally, the design of the software should be robust enough to all some modifications and growth. From my experience, the clients want changes, about 2 weeks after they start using it.

Dutch,

If you remember, I reached out to you a few months ago. My system is coming along very nicely and I know what you mean about wanting changes. The most difficult thing, I have found anyway, concerning paying someone to write the code (hes doing great btw), is being very Very VERY clear about what I want. We would have been done a year ago if I had been more CLEAR AND if I stopped adding functions. Did I say CLEAR?

All in all, a good coder is worth as big of $$ as the project will allow.

Of course they want changes. I got out of development and moved to UX. Good UX will work and understand users and their problems, and design a system or screens that give the user what they want and need. Devs just assume what the user wants and put it out there. No user interviews, no prototypes, no iterative process, no usability testing. Of course they want changes to what they get.

Been coding 35 years. Just inherited undocumented 1/2 million lines of code written by PhDs that did not know how to code. No one left in the office knows anything about the inner workings. Project has been dead 5 years and now resurrected. Sales sold it and said it had functionality that it didn’t. Wants estimates when it can be done. Full of Industrial Engineering optimization algorithms. McCabe complexity off the scale. Java code looks like Fortran. My manager doesn’t understand and thinks I have spent too much time this year trying figure it out, over 200 hours.

New job needed.

They are looking for coders in Kansas City. Lots of them.

Big pharma and big farma are trying to team up and design the perfect medicine food to improve the nutrition and health for the masses.

My son’s on a team. What could go wrong?

I was urged by my Programming Prof. in about ’81 or 2 – can’t remember exactly when – to go into programming as a career. She thought I was near the top as far as creativity, ability and attention to detail goes. I already had several years of hands-on with electronics and programming. I thought about it, but I just couldn’t stand the thought of staring at that screen umpteen hours a day, no matter what the monetary payoff. Go figure, now I write books and songs. And stare at a screen for umpteen hours at a time.

Those who are good at it, are good because of the way their minds work, their ability to see problems on a global level, and to solve them on a very detailed level. The vast majority of shitheads these comments are directed at, can’t even find their way out of their parent’s basement. It is a symptom of our time that “college” or other specialty training is tossed at young people who have never given a rats ass about their education. Medical assisting is one great example. All of the caregivers at my mom’s memory care facility had to be “Registered Medical Assistants.” It was clear from dealing with them that they had basically been failures in school (or marginal at best), but had gone down this road because 6 months of training got them a certification that would get them slightly better pay. But assisting in a doctor’s office is not the same as cleaning shit off the ass of an elderly person with dementia who is being verbally abusive while you are trying to help. You either have the calling and the discipline for a job, or you shouldn’t be doing it, and you sure as hell shouldn’t be encouraged by others to do something you don’t belong doing. Leave coding to those who have the mind for it….otherwise, everyone suffers from your crappy work and bugs.

MrLib – there are millions of “coders” an software engineers. They very, very good ones do very well indeed. The rest, not so much. One brilliant engineer is worth thousands of average ones. That is why there is such a huge disparity between what an engineer makes at say Google, and what an average engineer earns.

I code for $$, its a living.

Heck, I even failed my first programming course in college, as I cared not how to calculate interest on a 30 year note, since I never planned on having a mortgage to begin with.

Most of my work now involves reacting to changes in the world,
for example, Alberta now issues a gender X on drivers license, and by crappy, they demand we read this new gender,
even though we find no licenses with this imaginary gender, in the field. yet.

so, in their minds they see the world as male, female, and X, that’s great, tell me more.

paper pushers, creating work, for more paper pusher, to support 0.001% of drivers licenses with imaginary genders.

it’s a living.

PS, NY can’t decide how to represent the imaginary (and oppressed) community of purple haired, fictional cartoon characters.

here is NY’s plan:
Gender Code. 0 = Unknown, 1 = Male, 2 = Female, 9 = Other.

ok, so how do I get X from either 0=Unknown or 9= Other, and will I be offending anybody if I get it wrong?
conspiring minds want to know.

I can’t wait for California to weigh in on this.
