A Florida man died over the weekend after trying to remove a pigeon from a power line with an aluminum pole, police say.

A Florida man died this weekend while reportedly trying to remove one of his pet pigeons from a power line by using “a 20-foot aluminum pool pole.”

Elian Garcia-Rivera, 36, was electrocuted Saturday in West Palm Beach and found unresponsive near a pigeon coop on his property.

“He attempted to get a pigeon off of the power line in his backyard by using a 20-foot aluminum pool pole,” Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Teri Barbera told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Investigators say Garcia was thrown to the ground after the pole touched the power line. He was then taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

I guess we’re not supposed to use the word “retarded” these days. I still do.

Nowadays they’re called “people having special needs.”

Last week, out in the backwoods country, I saw a man who taking his ladder down off some power cable lines.
I was in shock. All you can do with stupid is stand back and admire it.

You’re fine if your ladder is touching a negative polarity line. If your ladder is leaning on a positive polarity line then you will probably fry. Anyone want to guess the polarity of that power line before you touch it with a metal object? If you’re part of the path between positive and the ground that’s when grisly things happen.

AC current is used in the US.

With 3 phase which are home lines you’ll get fried from +120V to Grnd as well as Grnd to -120V. I suppose that would give you a 2 in 3 chance of touching the wrong line. Most certainly the odds are bad.

Household power lines are SINGLE PHASE , at least in America.
+120 and -120 and a neutral leg is NOT 3 phase .

Reverse polarity AC will kill you just as dead as positive polarity. It’s the difference of potential between two points and the lack of resistance that dictates the amount of current flow.
Being the Dummy Load between doesn’t help. It doesn’t take much current to disrupt your heart rhythm and induce a heart attack but it takes a bit more to cause burns.

All Mr. Rivera had to do was read the warning the electric company puts on every bill: “Do NOT use aluminum poles to rescue your pigeons from a power line, you may be electrocuted”.

Whoops, I forgot: his bill probably gets sent directly to the Welfare Office.

His family will be suing the electric company because the warning wasn’t in 47 languages.

¡NO utilice postes de aluminio para rescatar a sus palomas de una línea eléctrica, puede ser electrocutado!

Maybe we don’t need a wall– just run some power lines on some low electric poles along the border– and let Darwinian Theory handle the rest

As Kenny Lane would say on his blog this guy “f*cked around and found out.”
Some people only learn the hard way. They make the rest of us look good.
