THIS DAY IN HISTORY – Grunge Rock Icon Kurt Cobain Commits Suicide – 1994

Via History.com

Modern rock icon Kurt Cobain commits suicide on this day in 1994. His body was discovered inside his home in Seattle, Washington, three days later by Gary Smith, an electrician, who was installing a security system in the suburban house. Despite indications that Cobain, the lead singer of Nirvana, killed himself, several skeptics questioned the circumstances of his death and pinned responsibility on his wife, Courtney Love.

At least two books, including one penned by Love’s estranged father, and a nationally released documentary, Kurt & Courtney, openly expressed doubt that Cobain killed himself and all but accused Love of having her husband killed. Her volatile reputation and healthy list of enemies helped to circulate the rumors. However, police have concluded that Cobain’s death was the result of suicide.

Cobain’s downward spiral began taking shape in Italy the previous month. He went into a coma and nearly died after mixing champagne and the drug Rohypnol. The public was led to believe that the coma was induced by an accidental heroin overdose, since Cobain had a well-known problem with the drug.

Back at home in Seattle, the police were called to Cobain and Love’s home when he again threatened to kill himself. Although Cobain stated in a 1991 interview that he didn’t believe in guns, the officers confiscated four from his possession. As his wife and friends watched him spin out of control, they attempted to intervene. Cobain mostly ignored their concerns but reluctantly checked into a rehabilitation clinic in Los Angeles at the end of March.

On March 30, Cobain walked away from the clinic without informing his family or friends. For the next few days, Love could not locate him and decided to hire a private detective on April 3. The detective made contact with Cobain the following day in Seattle, but Cobain refused to return to Los Angeles.

In the meantime, Cobain had convinced a friend to buy him a gun, claiming he needed it for protection. On April 5, Cobain returned home. He had ingested enough Valium and heroin to reach near-fatal levels. In the apartment above the garage was Cobain’s sloppily written suicide note, quoting Neil Young’s lyric that it is “better to burn out than to fade away.”

She killed him, but he probably would be dead by now anyway.

“Better to burn out than to fade away,” is a line typical of young fools full of false bravado. Notice that Neil Young himself has lived to a ripe old age.

I read this article about Butch Vig (who produced Nevermind) reminiscing:

https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/butch-vig-remembers-the-making-of-nirvanas-nevermind-25-years-later-220027922.html

When he first played the demo for about 30-40 people (including the Smashing Pumpkins) there was dead silence. Then someone says: “Play it again.” At some point during the second time through someone says “This is going to change the world.” Fuckin-A Bubba. My sister was living in San Francisco at the time. She had actually listened to “Bleach” (by the totally unkown, brand new band Nirvana) on the move out there, so she knew them. But all of the sudden, like a switch was turned on, Nevermind was everywhere. Every single party she went to was playing it, over and over. And, it is just that fucking good. Kurt Loder said it immediately “blew out all the absurdity of the 80s.”

Kurt Cobain was a totally fucked-up dude. The quintessential 90s burnout, but by God the music was great.

On stage, maybe the only place he ever really belonged, he was beautiful:

The first time I heard Nirvana, it blew my mind. It was so unlike all the other synth pop shit that had saturated the clubs and airwaves at the time. The instant you heard it, you knew. Kurt never stood a chance – if you were married to that dirty whore Courtney Love, you’d end yourself too.

Courtney murdered him. She had the most to gain.

Nonsense and part of the reason people think we’re all “Tin-foil hat wearing conspiracy nuts.” If you believe Kurt Cobain was murdered you fit that description to a T. There is ZERO evidence of murder, very clear evidence of suicide. He tried to kill himself a couple of months earlier, said repeatedly that he was going to do it. He acquired the gun he used just a few days before. He wrote a song called “I Hate Myself and I Want to Die” which he wanted to be the title of the album that became “In Utero.” Oh, and he joined a very long list of Rock Stars who killed themselves (by OD or more overtly) at age 27…the last year of life before human beings reach “emotional maturity.”

Pure fucking nonsense, bad thinking and poor strategy to grasp an any conspiracy straw out there, undercutting all the work being done to bring real conspiracies into the light.

Local radio station, that does a throwback lunch every day, is devoting the whole hour to Nirvana.

Yeah, no one cares about that talentless dirtbag, Kurt Cobain . More nonsense.

Nirvana came on the scene at precisely the exact moment it was supposed to appear. Dozens of bands became “also ran’s” practically overnight. The point I think Yo is alluding to is, murder or suicide, the result was the same. Creatively, Kurt was an unrivaled contributor often credited with the grunge sound though anyone paying attention knows Neil Young was performing a solid grunge show years prior to Nirvana’s emergence.
For the “Rust Never Sleeps” reference, As a bubblegum christian I know suicide is wrong, but I often ask myself,
“What glory is there in dying of old age?”
(It’s not necessary to answer that question, I know the answer…..)
a simple ponderance of life…..
From another recently lost grunger….
“Blood on my hands, from my creator,
you gave me a life now show me how to live..”
The answers to many of life’s questions are easily found if you know where to look……
