It was stifled by crony capitalists and their government protectors, who shut down innovation so that the new status quo could reap the profits in a safe and protected marketplace. All the money was then funneled into government via taxes and payoffs, which funded bigger and more bloated bureaucracies to ensure the continuation of the status quo marketplace. There are certainly limits, but REAL solutions have never been given a real chance because these solutions will for sure undermine the power structure that keeps things such a mess.
