And The Hits Just Keep On Coming…

Via The Raconteur Report

The geo-dweebs warn after an earthquake that there’s a lottery-level chance a bigger one is coming. They always say that. Tonight, it paid off.

I was at the bookstore after dinner out. Decided I was either having a stroke, or it was another quake.

Saw everyone else looking around and concluded B) was the operative answer.

The swaying was less intense, but it was a lot longer this time (90-120 seconds, minimum), so I figured it had to be a bigger event. (Rule of Thumb: When it feels like a 4 to you, but it lasts two minutes, somebody else’s world got f***ed up.)

Ding! Ding! Winner!

7.1 this time. (Yesterday’s was a 6.4.)
This one was 7 miles NW of yesterday’s, and about as far from any humans – still out in the middle of Mojave Desert BFE.

God help the people in Ridgecrest, and aboard China Lake NAWC.

They’ll definitely be over this nonsense now.

A 7.1 shake for 1 1/2-2 minutes is nothing fun. Nothing at all.

And being bigger this time, that officially makes the July 4th quake the foreshock.

On the plus side, the wind-up radio was fully charged by the sun today, and I consolidated some medical supplies, including the Catch-22 jump bag.

What disaster is your local flavor?

Where’s your stuff for that?

You’re far better off checking it two months too soon than five minutes too late.

Have a nice weekend.

I’m hoping the only rocking and rolling you do is to the stereo speakers.
And not the front yard.

It has been my experience as well that low to moderate shaking for a long time equals a big quake far away. I was leaning up against a hot tub in Huntington Beach watching the grandkids frolic when it hit. Low intensity that lasted well over a minute . My first thought was Ridgecrest. I was 25 miles northeast when the Thursday quake hit but it was softer and shorter in duration.
Out-of-staters have asked me how I stand the stress of not knowing when/where the “big one” will strike. I just don’t worry about it. Make as many common sense preps as possible and keep a clear head.
Always think about situational awareness, for everything, and get on with life.
Chances of getting hurt in a quake are pretty small overall.

Paul, when the airplanes hit the WTC, was your first thought Bin Laden or Al Qaeda?

Mags- my first thought was Ridgecrest because of the high probability of a strong aftershock from the July 4 quake (which turned out to be a foreshock).
My first thought on 9/11 was wtf? How can a pilot hit a building on a clear day? When the second plane hit I knew it was premeditated but no guesses as to the perps.
Have a beer. Relax.

Your comment reminds me of waking up to the Northridge quake. We were living far east in Riverside County at the time and my first thoughts were: “if this was close by, not too bad…..if far away, holy shit.” My mom living about 15 miles from Northridge suffered significant structural damage and was without water for a week (main feeder line to the west end of the San Fernando Valley burst during the quake). Don’t miss earthquakes, but would trade them for tornadoes any day. At least you don’t spend you time watching the weather channel worried if an earthquake is headed your way. Strap your bookcases to the wall, anchor the breakables as you can, have a kit prepared, and go about your life.

I was living in Brentwood….I thought a Freight Train was running through the living room….scary stuff. Lights were out, car alarms going off. Rode the Harley up into the valley and saw the apartment building that pancaked, very sad.

My friends in CA really get pissed off when I tell them that the big one is coming and they are long overdue and that when (not if) it does happen they may be cut off for 8-10 days…..and that is going to be a real shit show.

Did she get repaired?

Yes, after shelling out a ton as a deductible (wonderful scam the earthquake insurance business is). And by significant I mean serious cracks in walls (many inches wide) more the result of her lathe and plaster walls breaking apart than anything that made the house unlivable.

More reasons to avoid living in California. A Submariner told me Ca. is a shelf extending over the water. Maybe someday it breaks off.

Hope that “submariner” wasn’t the navigator.

By the way something, the San Andreas is a slip-strike fault. Nothing is “breaking off” (or “on a shelf”); LA’s just on its way north past SF, eventually.

No.
San Franshitsco is the point of the peninsula. It is approaching Portland at the head of the parade.
Keeping the Golden Gate Bridge up when it’s 800 miles long will be a problem, in 100,000 years.
We’ll all be dead, so I’m fine with kicking that can down the road.

L.A. is working on passing by Oakland.
San Jose is working on becoming the West Coast version of the Twin Cities.

All at the rate of about a foot every 2 years.

For the Common Core geoscience geniuses, CA never falls into the ocean.
But Baja gradually moves north of the border.
Pretty much like its inhabitants for the last 50 years.

The quake reoccurred in the same area, up here in the desert, Hollywood lives down below in the LA basin surrounded by squirrels. At worst, it felt like his morning ex-lax bowel movement.

Jim asked you to stop. I assume he asked you nicely. Are you incapable of stopping? Clearly you are not particularly good at spelling and reading isn’t your long suit either, but it would seem fairly simple to just STFU. But no. I guess we can see who the children are.

Ha ha. Won’t happen.
The Cascadia Subduction Zone off shore of Oregon and Washington has enormous potential for a huge quake. Emergency planners figure everyone west of I5 will be largely on their own for 30 days if a magnitude 9 quake hits.
