Just to note:
The total Civil War dead has been revised upward in recent years to roughly 750,000 at minimum. Also note that those deaths were by and large in some of the most brutal and inhumane conditions imaginable ie; the wounded being eaten alive by wild pigs in the killing fields of Gettysburg.

Gat,while I agree the war of succession was about finances completely does make for a good counter argument,along with many others.

Do not doubt that many who died felt that was what they were there for. 100,000 is plenty to have died as a reparation regardless. Bleeding Kansas and the Harper’s Ferry Raid are ample proof there was a highly militant faction fighting for just that. Whether that was used for ill by others is not the point.
The abolitionist Elijah Lovejoy lived near here and there are houses around here with tunnels between the basements which were part of the Underground Railroad. There were many, many white people involved in ending slavery and taking active roles in it.
