PLASTIC WRAP

This was my house, except the couch was a putrid green color. We had one window air conditioner that was rarely used because my dad hated air conditioning. Sitting on a plastic covered couch in 95 degree humid heat was unbearable. That’s why I spent most of my time on the rug playing Strat-O-Matic baseball.

Hah…like an attic bedroom strictly for the mother-in-law or crazy Aunt Millie if the senior center isn’t an option, that plastic covered couch from the 70’s could be held in reserve in the basement or the garage, as the sleeping area to be used by the inebriated party guest too tipsy to drive, in one last courteous gesture, before telling him the next morning he’s no longer allowed to consume alcohol at your parties.
Because, while passed out, he has a rep for marking his spot. Let him sweat it off. You’re covered.

At “Fantastic Freddy’s Fine Furniture, Faucets, Flooring, Flashlights & More”, they sold it to us as the $95 translucent leather upgrade.

That brings back memories. Every Italian household in NJ had a complete set of plastic covered living room furniture and no children were permitted to pass across the threshold.

And they had two kitchens…one to cook in…one to look at…I was well into adulthood before I realized the protective plastic on the lampshade was supposed to be removed.

My in-laws home in Cleveland had a front door.and porch no one.could use.

My husband’s mother polished that door with a Qtip to clean and polish in the crevices. The front room should have been roped offit was so pristine.

If the doorbell rang she went out the garage.and wavednfor them to come in the back way.

It was a result of being poor and learning to appreciate what they had built on their own.

I get that but when they got old?

Take off the plastic!.

My Aunt’s living room was off limits. Seriously! She actually raked the shag carpet.

At a greataunt’s.house we kids would get towels and “swim” across the wood floor to dust and polish. Now, that was good clean fun!

Only two things belong in plastic wrap. Fresh produce and nude, restrained women slathered in oil.

But… did you have Picture ON Picture television and hero mechanic on your couch?

I was a natural born picture taker. 1977 (15)… Those are my grandfathers surveying tools. I don’t suppose I need to say WHO is working on them?

My dad didn’t believe in AC. All he would permit was big fans. If it was really hot, we’d sleep in the basement. My friend across the street had the only house with AC. A little window unit in the living room. His dad would sit there on the couch (I don’t remember if it was covered with plastic) with all the lights out and shades pulled, tossing back a fifth of whiskey every day, while his wife – my buddy’s mom – babbled crazy talk like a Mexican Edith Bunker. I’d rather have died of heat stroke than spend a minute in their house.

many a working class family has those plastic covered sets of furniture–
regarding air conditioning,i can still remember our 1st ac–
we had a shotgun house & dad put the ac in the dining room, which was roughly in the center (depth wise) of the house–
by no later than 5am the entire family would have come out of their bedrooms and be sleeping on a blanket on the dr floor–
b4 we got the ac,i would often sleep on our screened in front porch in a hammock —

We never had AC in Georgia in the very early 60s…Not sure what happened to our white privilege…
