Is Eating Meat Worse Than Burning Oil?

Authored by Charles Kennedy via OilPrice.com,

Bad news for meat worshipers. Eating healthy isn’t just good for your body–it’s good for the environment, too, according to a series of new studies, suggesting that only vegetarians can save the planet.

The fight against climate change is already polarizing enough without adding the meat-plant divide.

But new studies insist that what we eat has quite a lot to do with climate change. It’s not just about food security or species extinction, either.

Today’s food supply chain creates around 13.7 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents and 26 percent of anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

A further 2.8 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents (5 percent) are caused by nonfood agriculture and other drivers of deforestation.

study from 2017 found that if citizens in 28 high-income nations like the United States, Germany, and Japan actually followed the dietary recommendations of their respective governments, greenhouse gases related to the production of the food they eat would fall by 13 percent to 25 percent. But giving up meat is hard to do.

According to the not-for-profit environmental research group World Resources Institute, humanity is not on track to meet Mission 2020, the parameters laid out to prevent catastrophic global warming and irreversible environmental damage.

With the global population growing from 7 billion in 2010 to a projected ~10 billion in 2050, and income growth across the developing world, overall food demand is set to increase by more than 50 percent. Meanwhile, demand for delicious animal-based foods is set to increase by nearly 70 percent.

With agriculture already using almost half of the world’s vegetated land, and agriculture and related land-use change generating one-quarter of our annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, what we eat has, perhaps, growing implications for topsoil, pollution, greenhouse gases, and deforestation.

Deleting meat and animal products from the menu might be unthinkable for many people but sparing cows would significantly reduce negative effects on the environment. Meat, sadly enough, are apparently the worst type of food, because of the scale of resources that go into their production. Yes, meat may be a great source of protein, but its production is extremely energy-intensive.

How much energy does it take to produce a steak?

Meat and dairy products, particularly from cows and other livestock, account for around 14.5 percent of the world’s greenhouse gases each year, which is about the same amount as emissions from all cars, trucks, airplanes, and ships combined.

According to a study published last year in the journal Science, beef and lamb have the biggest climate footprint per gram of protein, followed by pork and chicken. In this calculation of the average greenhouse gas emission associated with different foods, plant-based foods tend to have the smallest impact. Of course, they are also less yummy.

Thankfully, this doesn’t mean we all have to go vegan. Just eating less beef, lamb and cheese would be enough.

Milk has a smaller climate footprint than chicken, eggs, or pork per pound, according to study, as does yogurt, cottage cheese and cream cheese. But not all dairy is created equal. Cheddar or mozzarella cheese can have a significantly bigger footprint than even chicken or pork, since it typically takes about 10 pounds of milk to make one pound of cheese.

So it all depends on what cheese do you decide to eat—just being a vegetarian might not be a good solution if you’re stuck on cheese with a higher carbon footprint. In any case, almond, oat, and soy milk is a better choice than cow milk.

Eating meat is not the only thing causing climate change problems, some experts say. We also have to take into account food waste. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, Americans throw out around 20 percent of the food they buy. All the energy used for producing that same wasted food is also wasted.

Changing the way we eat—completely changing the way we eat—may be unpalatable for some. But experts contend that making just a few changes in your food habits is enough to improve your health and make a positive difference on the planet.

And Millennials are already doing this.

According to OnePoll study, close to 60 percent of Millennials are currently following a certain diet, such as vegan, keto, whole 30 and others, the New York Post reported. And that’s not all. The reason behind adopting that special diet is that 44 percent of those Millennials believe it is better for the environment, while 37 percent think it is more ethical. In addition, one-third of Millennials have cut down on their meat consumption.

According to Dr. Jim Willie, the German People are 90+ % on board with the global warming crap. Very surprising since they are some of the smartest people on the planet.

Oh for craps sake, this is getting dumber by the minute. Remember the Ozone hole? The hole over the Antarctic that was getting so huge that they had to reformulate freon? The hole that was going to cover the earth and destroy the atmosphere? That hole?
Well, said hole is the smallest it’s been in several decades. It’s postulated that warmer temps may be the cause, then again, they don’t really know the cause.

Same bullshit happening now with the climate change nonsense. Cows as enemy number one? Really? The real truth here is that ignorance is treated as fact. Fact is there’s lots of land unfit for farming but great for grazing herbivores. Fact is naturally occurring non-supplemental b12 only comes from animal products.
Supplements get b12 from where? Bacteria and one bacteria used to synthesize b12 is e. coli, the bacteria found in poop. That poop bacteria is in your intestines and the soil and it, along with other poop and soil bacteria are used to synthesize lots of things like antibiotics and other vitamins. B12is necessary for life. Manure from animals like cows acts as a fertilizer for the soil. Stop eating and using cows for dairy and the cow becomes less important and virtually extinct ditto the soil health. Chemical fertilizers deplete the soil. Look up permaculture for a better understanding of how to treat the earth and improve ecosystems.

Sheldon Firth was one of the folks who were preeminent in holistic farming practices, permaculture and other ‘radical’ approaches to land management. According to them livestock grazing, properly managed grazing (no overgrazing) results in this:comment image

Let us go back even a bit more to how “acid rain” was going to wipe out everything, trees, lakes and the fish, melt out your eyes . About only thing wiped out was a source of income for the men that worked in steel mills. Wonder how many of their children work in a Wendy’s now ( a depressing sight is to see thirty year old “men” working behind the counter of a fast food place wearing about the dorkiest uniforms ever conceived)..
Turned out the tree deaths were actually from insects.
Oh well.

Very difficult to separate out the climate change issue from sustainability, environment-friendly (less water usually). E.g meat alternatives like Pea Protein (Beyond Meat, Impossible Burger, etc.) use 11X less water per pound of protein. Ok…if you stopped right there that is a great positive impact……but then the crazy left goes all-in on carbon credits and CONTROL…they just can’t help themselves.

Substituting some portion of meat consumption for plant protein alternatives is the sensible actionable strategy….and consumer trends reflect that happening by 2030-2040 where 35% plus of protein consumption will be of meat substitutes (pea, soy or cultured meat) saving one heck of a lot of water plus the health benefits. Markets work….just get out of the way!

REAL short version is that Dr. Kellogg, yeah, that Kellogg, was anti-sex and especially anti-masturbation. He was so anti-sex that he adopted all his children and never consummated his marriage with his ‘wife’. He along with several others in the Natural Hygiene movement were the creators of the ‘meat is bad,’ plants good, sex bad and enemas good philosophy.
There’s a great book “The Road to Wellville” that was made into a movie about Kellogg and his ‘health spa’ that used lots and lots of enemas and water therapy to remove the poisons inherent in meat eating.

Let’s say we stopped eating meat. Does that mean the swine and bovines would live like the lions on Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, roaming the prairies and forests like regal creatures? Would the freed poultry take to the air in great flocks? “Go little piggy! You’re free now!” No. After the current generation of livestock died, there would simply be no further generations that come into being. Would that somehow be better than being born, suckling at the mother’s teat and then, after a pleasant adolescence, being quickly dispatched? I’m not sure why the vegans would consider animals’ non-existence to be preferable to their having had their day in the sun. Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all, I thought they always said.

Bovine males (other than a lucky bull or two) get their balls cut off and live a foreshortened life. The cows live a long life, being fed and watered, and all they have to do is give milk. So it’s a lot like humans.

Won’t ever give up meat, as long as it’s available for consumption. Beef, lamb, pork. Bring it.
That goes for fish and fowl as well.
Here’s a moderately long tale the PETA types will hate, but is a doozy for the natural outdoors types.

Bell’s brewery is in Comstock, Michigan. They have a few varieties, but one of their most popular is
Bell’s 2 Hearted Ale.
It’s named after the Two Hearted River that runs through Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

It’s a long drive to get there from my crib, but I make the trip twice a year with some like minded friends.

In the Spring, before the black flies have hatched and are too bothersome, we go to the U.P. to fish for trout and salmon in the Two Hearted. Spring of 2018 was an exceptional year. 8 out of 10 guys who made the trip hauled in a decent catch, which was promptly filleted, and pan fried in butter and moderated seasoning, then served as finger food to the campers the day they were successful with casting. Talk about fresh, and some damn fine eating.

In the Fall, we head back to the same spot, and last week, the changing colors were about 10 days later than the typical Oct. 10th peak for that northern climate. It’s why I missed Friday Fail. No cell coverage.

But, we timed our trip perfectly, and the woods were ablaze with red, orange, yellow leaves, gently falling off the trees, drizzling the green conifers, the ferns, and the ground we roamed.
The weather was mild, and although much cooler at night, we had a small bonfire two nights in a row, as the fire danger was low, from all the precipitation that wet the ground handsomely in the late Summer.
Up there, at night, far away from any of the major cities, if the sky is clear, with no overcast clouds,
Man, the stars are so abundant, it looks like a thousand diamonds scattered across a black silk blanket.
Amazing. We also had a pretty full moon, when overhead at about 3-4 a.m. lit up the campground yard to the point of not even needing a headlamp if the oldsters among us needed to step outside of the bunkhouse to tap a kidney.

Last Friday, I was walking along the dirt road that offers a two-track off ramp that leads into the camp yard.
2 of us were wearing canvas pants, field boots, a light long sleeve shirt, with a blaze orange vest with shell pocket rows on the front hips, and wide pocket on the back, for holding fowl, if one is lucky enough to bag one with their 12 or 20 gauge.
As we walked and talked, the elusive ruffed grouse just off the road ahead of us messed up. He moved.
I caught the movement with my eye, lowered the Mossberg, and took him. Success. Finally.
We don’t use hunting dogs, so we walk and occasionally bush whack over fallen trees, under poplar branches, and around the pines, up hills, down valleys. Makes for sore legs afterward.
If one gets flushed, dropping them while in flight is difficult, rare, and then the bird’s colors blend in well with the forest floor…tough to find. So, when we see one on the ground, we take them. Ethical? Some would argue, but it’s not like we bag the daily limit of 5 per man.
Six men hunted for 3 days, and we only took 2 birds. That’s how few we saw. I was finally lucky for a change, after a few years of coming up empty. But, it’s not about quantity. It’s quality, ambiance, & the experience.

Now, just for the PETA howlers, ya should’ve seen the field dressing.
Grouse on it’s back, wings spread wide, place a foot on each wing, boots snug up against the shoulders.
Grab the feet of the bird, and with a smooth motion, pull upwards for an efficient removal of the entrails, which are cast aside into the bush for some four legged critter to consume.
What’s left on the ground beneath the boots is the breasts.
The wings get clipped off, and head and neck easily removed. Rinse with water, check for shot pellets,
then, like the fish, deboned, seasoned, and pan fried in a lil’ bit of olive oil and butter.

Around those activities, the cell phone and PC get shelved for 4 or 5 days, we have 3 squares a day,
(with meat or fowl in every meal), sitting and relaxing, with a glass of scotch or a fine craft beer, and freedom to smoke whatever we want, whenever we want, almost wherever we want. I chose cigars.

With good friends, good food, good music in the great outdoors, it’s one of the finer things in life to do.
I recommend it strongly, even if you never carry a fish / game license, a gun, or a rod.
Some days, I just grab a walking stick and go for a stroll, to listen to the whispering wind that sways the trees, the chattering chipmunks and squirrels, amidst the sunbeams that warm me tired old bones, on a crisp Autumn Day.

Thanks for reading.

Funny about addiction, though. Soon as we got back in cell range, I pulled up TBP and went right to FF for my fix. By Sunday, the thread was long in the tooth, and I had no witty comments to add, but am sure lovin’ your’s and T4C’s pics and gifs. Some new contrib’s too.

2nd, yes, I have, and Admin gave me the green light to do so a while back.

It’s something I like doing, but am letting fear of critics responses justify my procrastination.
Your encouragement helps, Bill.
One other flaw is a perfection mindset that habitually edits and modifies, besides a tendency to veer off topic, with random thoughts that muddy up a clear, concise missive.

Nevertheless, I will consider it more, and try to get over the stage fright, submit an article, and just let the chips fall where they may.
Stay tuned, but no guarantees.

Uh, so blah, blah metric tons of CO2. Umm…plants need CO2 to survive. And make oxygen. And make food for herbivores and omnivores alike. Which, some of the herbivores are good meat. So fuck off climate change whiners, you fucking dumbasses. What needs to be eliminated is synthetic carbohydrates. Cancer, heart disease, obesity, diabetes and dementia are all linked to high carb intake. Rule of thumb #1-never eat carbs unless they are attached to fiber-like peaches, asparagus, beans, carrots, etc. Rule of thumb #2-fuck those climate change liars.
