I think I know what the deal is with all the gushing adoration Tulsi Gabbard has somehow managed to wrangle from ordinarily sensible conservatives. Think of a regular guy walking down the hall in high school, and the head cheerleader passes by and says, “Hi.” The dude’s going to think she’s awesome. Of course, just because she is polite doesn’t mean Regular Joe is ever going to take her to the prom.
Tulsi gets Strange New Conservative Respect for several reasons, but the primary one is that she doesn’t seem to hate our guts. She is what an opponent should be – an opponent, not an enemy. Let’s face it – the mainstream Democrat Party hates our guts, and given its malignant druthers it would strip us of our First, Second, and probably Third Amendment rights in order to make sure that we never, ever have a say in our own governance again. Then, with us silenced and disarmed, it would take our money, corrupt our children and generally oppress us in ways that make today’s punitive straw bans look tame. If you don’t believe that a scary number of mainstream lefties want us Normals enslaved or dead, well, you’re either in denial or not on social media.
Make no mistake – Tulsi is not one of us conservatives, though the kind of leftism she embraces (which owes a lot to the socialism of Bernie Sanders) shares some superficial similarities to the populism that has swept the GOP base. In many ways, we share her critique of an inept, corrupt ruling caste eager to send non-elite citizens off to fight their endless, mismanaged wars. We also share a critique of Big Business as a crony capitalist simulacrum of free enterprise, basically a bunch of rich jerks sidling up to the leaders of both parties to repeatedly shaft us regular folks to pump up a few digits on their balance sheets.
That Tulsi will take on the corrupt leaders of her garbage party, like Felonia Milhouse von Pantsuit, is certainly a welcome change from the lockstep stonewalling we have seen from the others – “Why, I see nothing wrong with Toots McHoover Biden peeing hot then getting 50 grand a month from an oligarch, and if you do you’re racist!” When Mee Maw got into the cooking sherry again and started calling her a “Russian asset,” you knew Tulsi was drawing blood from Ole Granny Reset Button. That charge is particularly amusing since Major Gabbard is an Army officer and a veteran of the elite’s dumb wars – another thing the right appreciates about her. But then everyone is a Russian agent these days. We cons get the same insane idiocy, and not just the president. My Twitter conversations on this topic tend to go like this:
“You’re a Russian traitor of treason just like Trump!”
“I was literally an Army officer in the Cold War.”
“You are betraying America and our allies!”
“I served in NATO for years and have a NATO medal.”
“You love Putin!”
“I served with and helped train Ukrainians, who are fighting Putin’s Russia.”
“See! You admit it!”
Gabbard is far more open to Assad than many of us cons like, but her opposition to the Fredocon warmonger model (like the opposition of many woke conservatives) seems to come from a place of genuine concern for the troops she serves and served with. Unlike most of the rest of her rivals, dead American warriors are not an abstraction. Moreover, you get the idea that, alone among the faux Cherokees, naggy mistresses, and militant furries up there on the Democrat debate stage, Tulsi actually likes America, and Americans.
The Gabbard Left and the Trump Right share the conclusion that our elite sucks and that it has forfeited any moral authority to lead our country, but the similarity ends there. She is not conservative and is not traditional. Just because she has doubts about offing babies in the third trimester, as opposed to supporting abortion until high school graduation, does not make her pro-life. She would take your guns, she would take your money, and she would generally make Barack Obama look like William F. Buckley.
Sometimes we forget that Tulsi is a leftist, and that she would screw up health care, open the borders and impose all sorts of climate hoax nonsense. A key difference from us, when you get past the surface similarities, is that she and her ilk have faith in the idea that government can take on more and more responsibilities, despite the fact that it has demonstrated that it cannot handle those responsibilities it already has, which themselves are mostly far beyond what government should be doing in the first place.
There’s another issue, the fox in the room if you will, that we need to address, and it is not an indictment of Tulsi Gabbard. It’s her storied looks. She is pretty, and she does not give off the man-hating vibe of the rest of her competitors (this also goes for the nominal men on the stage). Tulsi certainly plays it up – those yoga-pants workout videos are not just to reassure us about her cardiovascular fitness. But the fact that she is a woman comfortable with being traditionally feminine gives her a leg up on that squad of bitter, spinster librarians she is running against.
Again, this is not a diss against her. She is a serious person with serious ideas who just happens not to be a typically hateful liberal harridan. This is a recognition that good looks can sometimes act on an unconscious level to make her more attractive (in a meta sense) to those who might otherwise reject her based on her politics. In other words, this is a hit on those conservative males (and it’s mostly males) who go gaga over her pretty face and refuse to see that underneath the mask, it’s really Bernice Sanders.
So, don’t fall for Tulsi Gabbard, because just because we agree on a few things does not mean that her quirky brand of New Age socialism is acceptable. But then again, what she represents in terms of presentation is entirely laudable. She is what an American political opponent should be – a person you can discuss issues with without someone ripping out the other’s throat. We should not aspire to a political culture where we hate the folks in the other party – that current reality is immensely destructive and dangerous. Tulsi represents someone who says “Hi” to us in the hallway, and who we can say “Hi” right back to with no expectation of ever taking her to the prom.
If Tulsi Gabbard became Chairperson of the Central Committee of the socialist dictatorship our garbage elite is dying to impose upon us, she at least might not pack all of us deplorables off to the Hillary Fun Camps. That’s something. Conservatives don’t have a “love affair” with Tulsi Gabbard, they are simply enjoying a front row seat to and internecine donnybrook. We love watching both sides get bloodied because this is what “conservatives” have been doing to each other for as long as I have been alive. Usually the left refuses to swing at each other, Their solidarity has always been their greatest strength no matter how divided their loyalties to a specific candidate. The whole DNC rape of Bernie’s 2016 campaign knocked the rose colored problem glasses off a lot of xe/xer/xizzles and now they’re coming out against their own establishment figureheads. That’s the part we’re having a love affair with, not the characters. Tulsi Gabbard is one of the most conflicted and disloyal human beings in this race- she can’t maintain a single issue without contradicting herself because she’s callow and not that bright (listen to her vocabulary rather than her cadence- she is extremely articulate for a 20 year old, if you catch my drift). No conservative is within a parsec of her politically, it’s the bum fight we’re here to see.

Kurt calls her a (air) head cheerleader and paints Hillary as an evil (cat lady) librarian. He mentions rich jerks (jocks) and paints himself as a regular (conservative) joe. Cheerleaders are not known for being brainy like librarians. However, librarians are not known for being evil.
Kurt’s article could have gone in a different and better direction but he got too enthusiastic about name-calling that he lost his original idea; the conservative love affair with Tulsi is that she is a cheerleader just like airheaded Trump.

Couldn’t agree more. It has become a very common theme among writer’s posted here. Schlicter does it routinely as does Z-man and others.
I personally like Gabbard, have for years before she had any msm coverage at all. (I think Stucky posted a video of her here 4-5 years ago.) I think it is too harsh to call her “not that bright” but ultimately that doesn’t matter. She is poised and has guts. That is what we respond to and yes, she is attractive and I’m sure that I am responding to that as well. Sure, she hasn’t though most of her positions all the way down, but there is no all the way down. Every idea has some kernel of merit that their zealots cling to, while having to ignore so many other avenues of thought (Vonnegut passage came to mind just now, so I had to paste it below.) She is no intellectual giant, but no dullard either. The point is that she is head and shoulders above the field, above any politician we’ve seen for a very long time. But she is still a politician and nuance–the genuine philosophical grinding away to find tiny bits of truth in the infinite web of complexity of existence–is death to a politician.

Saying things like “Tulsi gets Strange New Conservative Respect” misses me entirely. What is that exactly? A political organization is capable of giving such a thing as respect? A personality spectrum shared by those who call themselves conservative?
These things have no real meaning, except to demonstrate the group think exists on all sides. Setting individual identity paramount is fundamental to liberty, which is fundamental to thriving human societies. Groups form from free association. Using the power of group identity is the politicians game. We all need to stop playing it…Schlicter (I can’t get the odd mashup of ass-licker and sphincter out of my head) should consider starting with himself.
Ultimately, you are right of course, the whole thing needs to be burnt down. The notion that just the “good” parts of our institutions can be rescued (Dave Rubins “Pantther in a China Shop” idea) is absurd. Human beings en masse simply don’t operate that way. We tend to go overboard with the razing process and think about the repercussions when its much too late. Trump is a far better instrument for this than the best statesman in history ever could be.
The left eating itself, as has been inevitable since the installment of the term “political correctness” into the lexicon, is a veritable smorgasbord of delicious schudenfreude. 🙂

OK let’s assume that Tulsi an “honest” opponent, by which we both love and want what is best for our country and her people but disagree on how to accomplish that objective. You watch these recruitment videosof young people entering the military and practically all of them have a minimal education with absolutely no prospects of gainful employment–and once in the military they are mostly institutionalized and receive training that has little or no relevance on the outside world.
I have learned one thing–if anyone wearing a uniform mumbles words in English or any other language, they are lying or disseminating clever propaganda.

He encourages his readers to throw out entire ideas, works of film, art and literature, historical events, etc. simply because someone is related to a Jewish person 10 generations ago. He encourages people not to parse information for the bits and pieces that might be relevant and true but to throw the baby out with the bath water. It’s good to question everything, but he’s sort of like the abusive spouse who wants to gas light and isolate you until he’s the ONLY person you will look to for truth”.

I don’t know what words she’s capable of using, but I don’t fault her for the words she’s chosen to use. Most people use terms like “less people” when they should say “fewer people”. Don’t even get me started on the subjunctive case. Regular folks say “if I was” when it should be “if I were”. I’m pretty sure Trump misspells words on purpose so that his opponents circulate his message while chuckling about his spelling. Because they’re the smart ones. Riiiight. She sticks to her message – no to “regime change wars”. She won’t win the nomination, but neither will Buttgeek. At least she’s made more of a name for herself that Swallowswell guy. Simplistic language works in politics.
I also like her because I think – her public positions notwithstanding – she doesn’t like Islam or homosexual behavior.

It wasn’t a jab, it was an observation. She’s extremely polished in her delivery- very articulate, in fact. Clear, concise, great pacing, so you bet it works politically. My point is that her vocabulary usage seems very limited even by Millennial standards which tells me she’s not a reader nor a complex thinker although she acts like one. I consider it a tell, but who knows, I could be mistaken. Maybe everything she says is scripted by someone who isn’t very well read or it is all deliberately dumbed down to appeal to the masses.

They were already promoting the mainstreaming of homosexuality when Clinton ran the first time. My son was in grade school then and he said Bush was bad for being against homosexuality. I noticed Clinton was promoting the don’t ask, don’t tell policy. By the time Obama came along, we were full-blown queer in the good old USA. The Democrat party keeps expanding, absorbing everybody in its path like the blob of movie fame. It makes me think Lee Greenwood was a recruiting campaign for whites to run to the Republicans.
