As Hong Kong ATMs Run Out Of Cash, Central Bank Steps In To Prevent “Panic Among The Public”

Via ZeroHedge

As the violence in Hong Kong escalates with every passing week, culminating on Friday with what was effectively the passage of martial law when the local government banned the wearing of masks at public assemblies, a colonial-era law that is meant to give the authorities a green light to finally crack down on protesters at will, one aspect of Hong Kong life seemed to be surprisingly stable: no, not the local economy, as HK retail sales just suffered their biggest drop on record as the continuing violent protests halt most if not all commerce:

A Fake Letter To Fake Employees On The Verge Of A Modern IPO

Authored by Jason Gay of the Wall Street Journal

ILLUSTRATION: ZOHAR LAZAR

To the staff:

Folks, I know everyone was excited about cashing in on our upcoming public offering, but it looks like this whole “profitability” craze is here to stay, at least for a while. We’re going to have to delay the IPO. Believe me, I am as disappointed as you are. I’d already picked out four private islands! Which technically would have been—yes—my own archipelago. Sigh.

In the meantime, we’re going to have to tighten up until this businesses-should-make-money fad blows over. Here are some company-wide decisions, effective immediately:

Buddha’s Children

Guest Post by The Zman

In his interesting post on Robert Mugabe’s intelligence, the blogger calling himself Pumpkin Person notes “One reason for thinking he’s in the upper end of this range is that he was a Marxist, and left-wing politics are positively correlated with IQ (at least if you control for race and income).” This does not imply that all Marxists are highly intelligent. He is simply noting the observation that left-wing politics of the radical sort highly correlate with intelligence. Smart, educated people tend to be radicals.

Doug Casey on Nanotech: “This Will Change the Whole Nature of Life Unrecognizably”

Chris’ note: Chris Reilly here, managing editor for Casey Daily Dispatch.

As regular readers know, our founder, Doug Casey, believes times are about to get ugly economically and politically. But it’s not all bad news.

Doug also says new advancements in science and technology will create the biggest change in human history.

And there’s one technology that stands out from the rest: nanotechnology.

In fact, at our second annual Legacy Investment Summit last week, Doug got on stage and said that nanotech “will change the whole nature of life unrecognizably.”

The next day, during a panel with Exponential Tech Investor editor Jeff Brown, Doug explained this tech in more detail.

Doug

He said when it comes into its own, within the next generation, “All of history will be rewritten as the pre-nanotech era and the post-nanotech era.”

These are bold statements. And after listening to his presentation, I had to hear more from Doug himself. Below, in a brand-new Conversations With Casey, he breaks it all down for me…

THIS DAY IN HISTORY – The Yom Kippur War brings United States and USSR to brink of conflict – 1973

Via History.com

The surprise attack by Egyptian and Syrian forces on Israel in October 1973 throws the Middle East into turmoil and threatens to bring the United States and the Soviet Union into direct conflict for the first time since the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Though actual combat did not break out between the two nations, the events surrounding the Yom Kippur War seriously damaged U.S.-Soviet relations and all but destroyed President Richard Nixon’s much publicized policy of detente.

Is Trump The Dude to Break the Woke?

Guest Post by Tom Luongo

“I like your style Dude … but do you have to use so many cuss words?”

“The fuck you talkin’ about?”

– The Big Lebowski

When Donald Trump won the 2016 election it was obvious to many, including myself, that he could be what Strauss & Howe called, ‘The Grey Champion’ in their seminal book “The Fourth Turning.”

The Grey Champion isn’t perfect. In fact, he’s a strongman. He can be a force for good or evil, depending on the times. At his essence, he is the right person in the right place at the right time to usher in a new era of human society for the next cycle of generations, usually four lasting around 85 years, or one human lifetime.

Past Grey Champions in the U.S have been FDR and Abraham Lincoln. Neither of these men would be people I would consider having been good for the country or, frankly, the world.

Swamp Draining Begins: Trump Orders Cuts To Security Council Amid CIA Whistleblower “Coup”

Via ZeroHedge

President Trump has ordered a significant reduction of staff at the National Security Council, according to Bloomberg, citing “five people familiar with the plans.” The cuts were described as part of a White House initiative to streamline the agency under new National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien.

Two of the people familiar with the decision to shrink the NSC insisted it was largely rooted in both the transition to O’Brien’s leadership as well as Trump’s desire to increase efficiency at the agency, which grew under former President Barack Obama. About 310 people currently work at the NSC. –Bloomberg

This Is What A Recession Looks Like

Authored by Michael Snyder via The Economic Collapse blog,

Do you remember what it was like in 2008 when it literally felt like no job was truly safe?

It was a terrible time, and many fear that we could soon be facing a similar scenario.  In recent days, big companies all across America have been laying off workers at a frightening pace.  As economic activity has slowed down, a lot of firms are feeling compelled to slash their payrolls, and if a deep recession is ahead of us then what we have seen so far could be just the tip of the iceberg.  In 2008 and 2009, millions of Americans lost their jobs very rapidly, and it could very easily happen again.

No Cheers for Democracy

Via International Man

no cheers for democracy

Democracy, the most celebrated religion of both the Left and Right, has spread like wildfire…

Zimbabwe has recently fallen for more democracy. Social movements in the Middle East — with the most recent one known as the Arab Spring — are inching the area toward more democracy. Even in reclusive Saudi Arabia democracy is slowly gaining an upper hand.

Bangladesh, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Nepal are solidifying their democracies; their military or traditional-religious heads have found it increasingly difficult to assert their will. Many political leaders in Africa now vacate their seats in response to the verdict of their citizens.

Amber Errata

Guest Post by Eric Peters

Well, it appears the good news posted yesterday is less so today.

The murdering armed government worker Amber Guyger has been sentenced to just ten years in prison for barging into an innocent man’s home and shooting him to death. She will be eligible for parole in just five years’ time.

The judge coo’d and gave her a Bible.

To put this in context: The Orange Man’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort got a heavier sentence – an effective life sentence, given the guy is 69 – and he didn’t murder anyone.

Or even trip them.
