True story: Little tavern outside city limits in my hometown Bell City, Mo, salute if you remember Hee Haw population 426, up from 402 when I was there.

In 1981 or 1982, former County Sheriff’s Deputy got killed in the doorway of the little tavern and I was riding around in my little Datsun pickup truck and picked up a guy I knew who ran out the back door after he saw the whole thing.
He told me the story and we shared a six-pack, which is what you do while riding old unmarked country roads to avoid a town is full of county and state patrolmen after a drunk and rowdy cop thought he’d stop by and kick his ex-wife’s ass one more time.
He got killed by a 22Magnum shot to his heart, point blank and died in the doorway after emptying his own 44 Magnum service revolver into the regular customer who shot him. That guy was in the hospital for a while and walked with a limp for the rest of his life (still alive.) Almost 40 years ago. Wow…
The guy in my Datsun pickup providing beer to a minor eventually moved to Texas and then, later, when I had nothing better to do, I moved down there to Texas and got a job at a refinery near Pasadena.
That night I dropped him back off at the bar after all the cops left. Shelby (who owned the bar) was the dead cop’s ex-wife and she had bills to pay. She said screw that son of a bitch… she was glad he was dead.
For a while, her business boomed.
