Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez went on an extended discussion about economics and John Maynard Keynes where she referred to him as “Milton Keynes.”
The New York Democrat said that the “famed economist Milton Keynes predicted that by 2030, GDP and technology would have advanced so much that it would allow everyday people to work as little as 15 hours a week and provide for their families.”
Ocasio-Cortez, 30, said that Keynes was not entirely wrong because technology and GDP “have advanced wildly since the 1960s” but that wealth inequality has kept people from experiencing a shorter workweek.
The freshman congresswoman later clarified that she had mistaken Milton Friedman with Keynes. “UGGGH TYPO. It’s John Maynard Keynes. Mixed his name with Milton Friedman — a (very) different economist,” she said.
Ocasio-Cortez, a socialist, has a degree in economics from Boston University, which she regularly boasts about online. Friedman was a staunch free market economist, while Keynes laid a significant amount of theory behind the idea that government spending contributed toward economic growth.
Wondering: How many other House Democrats have a degree in Economics like I do?
Trying to find who out here is going to be in the Gini Coefficient Appreciation Squad.

Does anyone need any more proof that Economics is bullshit with a smattering of common sense?
AOC may not have been wrong. Monetarists are Statists in Sheep’s clothing.
If AOC is a graduate of Boston University I think it is time to close that school.
She was a double major add international relations. Thus her wisdom about foreign policy.
Greater Boston is good for producing spies, feminists, and blithering idiots.
Ask me how I know.
She’s got a seat in CONgress, an expense account, and she gets around.
Still bashing AOC?
I hear what you are saying. Stupid statements does not make for a stupid individual or a non leathel one.
And probably recognized by 2/3 of Americans.
I hope so. Never underestimate something like this. I certainly would not turn my back to it.
AOC is indicative of the intellectual level of those who voted for her, she is just one more at trough who shouldn’t be, the people are the problem.
She also graduated Cum Laude. Says a lot about the economics dept. at B U, doesn’t it?
To AOC one old white guy looks like another.
Hmmmm with such knowledge as she has.Makes one wonder how she passed any of her classes. Any ideas?
I can take a WAG!
Obvious answer, is the faculty was supportive of her ideological views because it mirrored their own curriculum. You can teach John Locke and Adam Smith’s views on classical liberalism/economics to people but you can’t force them to believe it. Many academics never work in the corporate world then return to teach, it’s an oddity.
Guess she didn’t learn about Rousseau who said common people should be paid just enough to survive. Seems to me that’s a more accurate economic model to what we have than anything Keynes or Friedman said.
Sounds right. We work 15 hours a week to provide for our families, and the other 45+ hours a week to provide for the families of Alexandra’s co-ethnic welfare parasites and their peers in the black community.
Her real complaint is, presumably, that we’re allowed to keep anything.
