It’s a baited hook. The government created a problem which they now propose to solve. With millions on unemployment, the government has generously granted them an extra $600 per week. Now that the authorization expired, Trump extended it with a trimmed benefit of $400. While the bait appears to be a lifesaver, his hook is a suspension of payroll taxes that fund Social Security and Medicare. He has set up a conflict between the working young and the close to retirement old.

The anticipated depletion of SS in 2034 has been brought forward to 2020 since payroll taxes are paid out as SS benefits in real time. Trump proposes to relieve employers of payroll taxes, converting SS and Medicare into government-funded welfare programs. They have spent many years talking about them as such, complaining about military, welfare and SS government expenditures as being part of the same pie.

If payroll taxes are not really apportioned to a SS savings account, if they are merely another source of taxes, the admission was long overdue. The next topic will be a needs based SS benefit just like any other welfare program. However, it will require a removal of the contribution limit on income. Or, as Tom Luongo suggested, we can just let retirees starve.

Probably not a good idea to tell Viejos to piss off. The Lion In Winter is a bad MF’er with nothing to lose, especially if defending his clan. Trump once more is adding a dose of reality while the Prog dufi (flows better than dufuses) cling to unicorns and lollipops even while they find ever more people to give “entitlements” they never paid into. It’s one more argument for privatized IRA plans instead of Socialist Security or in addition tp. I got a summary from SS the other day and it says it should be equal to only about 40% of what a guy needs to live on.

He has only suspended the collection of payroll taxes. They will have to be paid back next year, giving everyone a 7% increase in income this year and a 7% decrease next.

You are falling for the old ‘just the tip’ line. He floated the trial balloon about suspending them indefinitely if he is reelected. With the Bush suspension and this suspension, they will manage to bring about an earlier demise of SS.

Coyote – I know it is just a ruse and will be impossible for any future POTUS to collect the back taxes. How many people who have them suspended this year will still be working next year? How many businesses will be bankrupt and not able to pay them? If Creepy Old Joe wins, will he reinstate the payroll taxes and demand the back taxes be paid?

This was a move to paint SanFranNan and Chucky into a corner. If they go to court and the court sides with them, it is their fault that taxes go up and unemployment payments disappear.

If Patriot Act Joe wins election, we’ll probably all be doing the Kamala Lewinsky.

look, I’m in the same boat, will “get to retire” in 2034″ at age 68. I expect to get every penny of SS that I put in, and so will you.

The only problem I see is that those pennies will buy about 1/3 of what they buy today.

You can live on credit, then default, and do it again every 7 years, or you can save and have a great credit score, at the end of the day, both choices get you to the same point: a little further down the road.

it’s not how much debt or credit you have when you die that counts, it is how you use it during you time on this planet.

personally, I think I will get 20 credit cards a few years before I retire, and then use them to live on, with no expectation of paying back the principle. just pay the stupid interest, like every country on this planet does to their central banksters.
