SUNDAY MORNING CLASSICS ON TBP

A collaboration of: “The Classic Music Mafia”
nkit, Austrian Peter, and Steve C.

Every Sunday morning we present selections for our TBP family to enjoy.

We present symphonies, ensembles, quartets, octets, etc.

Not all of our music is strictly ‘classical’. We may stray a little, but we strive to make all of our selections ‘classy’.

We offer tips on proper ‘symphony etiquette’ and even some selections that are a bit light-hearted and fun aimed at a younger audience. Those pieces will be so designated, and might be a good way to introduce kids to a world of music that they might not have been exposed to or think of as old and ‘stuffy’.

A full symphony will run as long as it will. We don’t want to cut a symphony short. However, we also include some shorter pieces that we try to keep under fifteen minutes in length. You can sample each and hopefully find one or more that pleases you.

We hope that you enjoy our Sunday selections.

Pyotr Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5

The Oslo Philharmonic.

With conductor Vasily Petrenko

On 19th February 2011

At the Oslo Concert Hall.

The concert was a celebration of the appointment of Vasily Petrenko as the Chief Conductor Designate of the Oslo Philharmonic.

Ennio Morricone

I want to dedicate this submission to the late, great Ennio Morricone who passed away a month ago on July 6 from complications due to a fall at his home. He was 91 years old. He was an incredible talent as a musician, composer and conductor. I believe that the Almighty God was his own personal music instructor, as Ennio brought us music from heaven. Again, I want to create another Morricone sandwich with three rather short pieces,

The first piece is titled”Malena” (5:16) Briefly, the story is one which a lot of us old guys can look back and relate to. This 2000 romantic tragedy drama is the story of a 12 year old Sicilian boy (Renato Amoroso) who falls in love with a beautiful woman (Malena) who is twice his age, and whose husband is away in the war. Sadly, for Renato his love is an unrequited love. A brief plot summary is here; Malèna

Morricone was nominated for five different awards for his scoring of this piece and won the BAFTA award for “Best Score”, and deservedly so. Without further ado enjoy this beautiful music.

The “meat” of this sandwich is from “The Mission” – a shortened version (3:16) of the theme from The Mission. It is titled “Gabriel’s Oboe.” This beautiful melody needs no further introduction.

Lastly, I’ll add another beautiful Morricone score titled “Amapola” (5.:22). This is Morricone’s orchestral version of the 1920 song by the Spanish songwriter Jose Maria Lacalle Garcia. This version was part of the soundtrack for the 1984 epic crime drama titled “Once Upon a Time in America”. It is truly a gorgeous piece of music.

I hope that you find this sandwich as tasteful as I do. A Blessed Sunday to all!!
