Yup. And pop top bracelets for chicks.
Shooting a beer with a pop top was the cat’s ass.
Pop tops are newfangled. We carried church key openers on our keychains.
I still have one of those somewhere in the car
What are you driving Geo? A ’56 DeSoto firedome?
If I told you you wouldn’t believe me
Yep. A mess of spam cans when I was a kid. And Crisco. And who knows what else. In the last two decades, only 7.62×39 and 5.45×39.
Don’t forget about coffee!!!!
and cans of corned beef
I’ve opened spam cans of M2 Ball a time or two to feed my Harrington Richardson Garands.
I heard stories passed down from generation to generation.
Sardines and spam.
Pipe tobacco usually came in a can with a key.
” You got Prince Albert in a can”
Then you better let him out.
Before he suffocates.
Spam and ham (the big ones).
I’m still shocked when I hear the emergency preparedness folks reminding people to purchase a manual can opener in case the power is out. My mom bought an electric when I was a kid (70s). The thing got so disgusting I swore I would never own one. Never have.
Swiss army knife can opener still the fastest, cleanest, most reliable can opener ever.
I use my PAL RH 36 (souvenir of Dad’s day in the army) Bet it’s faster (and bigger)
A little p38 can-opener from a box of C rations. One on my key-chain, and, one by the kitchen sink. It is all you need.
Used a rotary phone? Used a metal can of oil?
Our first phone had no dial. You picked it up and if nobody else was talking you told an operator who to ring up.
A friend of mine, whose dad worked for a local phone co, has an old wooden crank phone. Real nice collectors item.
Hello, Sara? Get me my house.
I used to buy antifreeze in metal gallon cans that you had to open with a church key. Matter of fact, I built huge displays of them while working as a stock boy for a drug store. When I got off work, I’d hop in my souped up ’58 Impala convertible and go cruising for chicks (found out too late that wasn’t a good idea). THAT’S why we say they were the good ol’ days.
Oh yeh, anti freeze was 88 cents a gallon, thanks federal reserve.
Heavy paper oil “cans” too, circa 1970s. Aluminum tops & bottoms.
Used a church key or if you were really lucky your dad bought one of those spouts that you’d punch in to the can like at the service station.
I also have one of those. Church key, a punch key, and a K-ration can opener
I still have my P-38 (aka a John Wayne) I received in the USMC for opening C-Rats.
That’s what I was trying to describe. I have a friend that has collected a bunch of these. Some brands I’ve never even heard of.
Sardines and Kipper Snacks
Mind you, cans of corned beef are still open with a key. But I remember those days when food tasted like food
Hello Admin, nothing to do with this article but it seems like a great news worth posting on TBP: Tom Fitton nominated to serve on Judicial Oversight
https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/519488-trump-to-tap-conservative-activist-tom-fitton-to-serve-on-judicial
sorry but i downvoted that–fitton is better 4 us being on the outside–
The personnel of Judicial Watch will still be on the outside and they are the foot soldiers for Tom Fitton that could lead to more judges being thrown out
P-38. C mon man…You know the thing
Still do as there are a couple of products I use that are still opened with a key.
Chastity belt comes to mind…
Damn, there are a lot of old guys on this site.I remember all that stuff above.
Hey I’m watching the series “Combat” with Vic Morrow and Rick Jason on youtube as a reminder of my youth (’cause Dad wouldn’t speak of the war)
H&I, Heroes & Icons, Channel 1035 on our local Communistcast has Combat, Twelve O’Clock High, Tour of Duty, Superman, Batman, Baa Baa Black Sheep and all that stuff.
Combat was an overall great series, still good today, but watching Twelve O’Clock High as an oldster, it was pretty much a soap opera with planes.
The names are still in my head! Lt, Sarge, Little John, Kirby, Doc, Frenchie. They had unkowns getting ‘killed’ every week. I remember they marched out in the woods, looking for a fight, to what sounded like porn music in the background. Loved it. I could not see the show often as
we only got two (2!!!!!) over the air channels. Cable was a rare treat. And black and white TVs
with analogue tuners…no remotes yet.
The good ol’ days?
Same here .. so I was happy to find it on youtube which I usually never watch
Here’s the link to one of the season 2 episode
Vic…Duck…..oooowww
Yea, I’m so old, we used to open windows with a rock.
If you’ve ever opened a can of something older than you are with a P-38, raise your hand.
We were using up 1943 vintage C-Rats when I first arrived in Nam.
I distinctly remember opening a can of “Ham and Eggs, Chopped” with a P-38 circa 1956 (this was 1980).
Doc
That and the ham loaf were the worst of the worst. We used to raffle off the rights to the Pork&Beans and Spaghetti&Meatballs in each case. There was a noticeable improvement in the 1952 models when we finally ate our way to them.
In my younger years I opened a few cans of “Whoop Ass ” without a key .
Kids today know nothing of settling things with a pair of boxing gloves . In school if yah’ had a beef with someone you could challenge them to a few rounds. It was fun and just a few bruises was all that was dished out .
Anybody remember that ‘stuff’ called KLIK? Man. That was ornery tasting …
