THIS DAY IN HISTORY – The destruction of Atlanta begins – 1864

Via History.com

On November 12, 1864, Union General William T. Sherman orders the business district of Atlanta, Georgia, destroyed before he embarks on his famous March to the Sea.

When Sherman captured Atlanta in early September 1864, he knew that he could not remain there for long. His tenuous supply line ran from Nashville, Tennessee, through Chattanooga, Tennessee, then one hundred miles through mountainous northern Georgia. The army he had just defeated, the Army of Tennessee, was still in the area and its leader, John Bell Hood, swung around Atlanta to try to damage Sherman’s lifeline. Of even greater concern was the Confederate cavalry of General Nathan Bedford Forrest, a brilliant commander who could strike quickly against the railroads and river transports on which Sherman relied.

During the fall, Sherman conceived of a plan to split his enormous army. He sent part of it, commanded by General George Thomas, back toward Nashville to deal with Hood while he prepared to take the rest of the troops across Georgia. Through October, Sherman built up a massive cache of supplies in Atlanta. He then ordered a systematic destruction of the city to prevent the Confederates from recovering anything once the Yankees had abandoned it. By one estimate, nearly 40 percent of the city was ruined. Sherman would apply to the same policy of destruction to the rest of Georgia as he marched to Savannah. Before leaving on November 15, Sherman’s forces had burned the industrial district of Atlanta and left little but a smoking shell.

What Sherman did Was nothing compared to what a long string of black democrat mayors and city councils have done.

Maybe so but Sherman, Grant and Sheridan were war criminals with the approval of Lincoln .They looted, raped and murdered women and old folks. They should have been held to account. Of course as Generals they were not. Lincoln was though.

One quick shot to the head is NOT being held to account. His suffering should have gone on for years….just like his immoral war crime.

Sure I agree with you 100 percent. I was speaking comparatively.
Grant of course went on to be elected President of the United States, not once but twice !

Sherman went on to be Commanding General of the United States Army and then the lucrative speaking circuit.

After Sherman , Sheridan became Commanding General of the United States Army until his death.

In comparison the only one held accountable was Lincoln. In my opinion.

My Grandmother, Mary Lockhart Smith, told me about Sherman’s men taking over her Grandparent’s farm and even tearing down their house and barn to steal every scrap of food. As a result, her Grandpa developed a shaking disease that killed him; they said he starved. Today we know that he died of Beriberi which is caused by the lack of Niacin. Southerners avoided that before the Yankee Invasion by feeding corn (low in Niacin) to their hogs and then eating the meat (which has Niacin). My mother married a NYC Jew who was a US Marine Veteran who was a tail gunner on a B-24; he shot down 5 Zeros in two days at Tarawa and was awarded a medal by Sec Forrestal. I got an earful of both sides of the Civil War regularly and Grandma was 100% right about the GD Yankees.

Sherman and Stonewall Jackson were the only two who knew from the outset that the civil war was going to be a long and bloody affair.
