BUT FIRST – some news about BRUTON, my home town (actually it’s a village – pop. 3,000 but it is a ‘town’ because it has a town council). “Ewan Jones, chairman of the town council, described how independent businesses classed as ‘non-essential retail’ during the pandemic have been put at risk of closure and are now a chief concern as the local economy looks to recover.
He said: “We’re in a tourist area and a tourist economy, so our hospitality businesses struggled. “The big supermarkets have kept open and you see Tesco trucks and Amazon boxes throughout the town – that’s taking trade away from the local businesses, which are the ones everyone wants on the high street.”

£102bn TO SAVE THE NHS! – Spending on the health service, social care and public health needs to rise by £102bn over the next decade, funded by big tax rises, an inquiry has said. The boost would cut avoidable deaths from cancer and heart disease, tackle health inequalities and rebuild the NHS, according to a four-year commission of inquiry by the London School of Economics and the Lancet medical journal.
Its report warns Boris Johnson to drop his planned reorganisation of the NHS in England, which featured in last week’s Queen’s speech, which it said will be disruptive and bring no benefits. It urges ministers and the NHS to fight preventable illnesses by cracking down on smoking, drinking and poor diet; and proposes an end to chronic staff shortages through the creation of a sustainable supply of healthcare workers.
BUT – what they fail to tell is that for decades the NHS has been starved of funds and suffered reductions in bed-counts of over 50% compared to the early 2000s. In fact we all know that this has been “privatisation by stealth”, a government strategy for many years and is typical of the underhand way that our manipulative politicians go about fleecing the long suffering British public. No wonder that politicians regularly rank lower than second-hand car dealers in the survey polls – there is no trust left, either for government or for that matter the mad scientists who seem to have taken the reigns of our failing wagon of state.
The problem – if you set aside the one about the lack of money, which you cannot help but scream at the telly at increasing volume as the hour unfolds – is that sometimes there are not enough doctors; sometimes there are not enough nurses; and, always, there are not enough beds in the intensive care unit.
Before Covid, the trusts had no patients waiting more than a year for surgery (which is good, provided you don’t think what the situation could have been if it had simply been given some money. We now have about 4.7 million people waiting for hospital treatment, the highest number since at least August 2007.
The number of people waiting for 52 weeks or more is higher than at any time in more than 13 years. In a BBC documentary about all this we see medical secretary Becky as she calls yet another patient to tell them their surgery will be postponed yet again. “I know,” she says helplessly to the unheard voice down the line. “There are so many people like you in the same situation.” She puts down the phone and says to the camera, with the weary understatement that is the hallmark of the NHS worker: “It’s a very difficult conversation.”
Referrals for urgent cancer treatment were also down 8% on last year, with 15,475 fewer people being sent for help. Fewer people were admitted to accident and emergency departments, down by more than 50,000 to 503,913 in March compared with the same time in 2019, before the pandemic hit.
Macmillan Cancer Support said the data “illustrates the catastrophic impact of Covid-19 on cancer diagnosis and treatment” and the King’s Fund health thinktank described the data as “a bleak picture of the challenges facing the English health service”.
“Ministers must now be honest about the real pressures on the NHS and properly invest in the workforce,” said Dame Donna Kinnair, the general secretary of the Royal College of Nursing. The shadow health secretary, Jonathan Ashworth, tweeted that patients were “paying the price” of “10 years of Tory underfunding, cuts, chronic staff shortages [which] left the NHS weakened when the pandemic hit”.
End to restrictions welcomed with open arms – Lockdown restrictions were further eased on schedule from 17 May in England. Some main points: people will be able to meet indoors in groups of up to six or as two households, or outdoors in groups of up to 30 people, and yes, you can hug outdoors (actually, you always could), though the government still urges caution. Pubs, bars and restaurants can reopen indoors. Hotels, hostels and B&Bs in the UK will allow overnight stays in groups of up to six people or two households.
People will also be able to travel to a small number of countries on the green list (12) and will not have to quarantine on return – dependent, though, on whether those countries are accepting visitors, which is a significant caveat because places like Australia are not. NOW that Brits are looking forward to the removal of all restrictions next month it is time we started shaking hands again. Here are some good reasons why from someone who should know: “It is an original piece by Dr David McGrogan, Associate Professor of Law at Northumbria Law School, in defence of the handshake. As far as Prof. McGrogan is concerned, we cannot hope to return to normal life unless we start shaking each other’s hands again. Here is an extract: “The handshake is alive and well and living in Paris – not to mention London, New York, and Stockton-On-Tees. Prohibition never eliminates a practice, as any fool can tell you; it just drives it into the weeds. And handshaking is no different. People are still doing it. And now it has a subversive edge.
When somebody offers you their hand these days, it is no longer just the meaningless ritual of yesteryear – it sends some important messages, which are all the more profound for the fact that they are not consciously sent or received. Human communication is not just verbal, but physical and one only has to think for a second to realise that our physical ways of communicating – kissing, hugging, shaking hands – are often the most significant. What words are there that can surpass a simple hug from a loved one at a time of crisis? Or a first kiss? Or a handshake, on the playground after a fight?
The first unconscious message sent by the post-2020 handshake is simply stated: you and your fellow hand-shaker are simpatico. The mask-wearing, the social distancing, the fear-mongering – maybe you’ll go along with it if you must, but deep down inside, you hate it. BUT if we thought that easing restrictions would be the ultimate panacea and all will be lovely in the retail garden once more – then this report pours cold water all over our damaged economy leaving us yet again drowning in our misery that is Britain in 2021.
“Store closures and job losses are a threat to Britain’s retail sector despite an increase in activity following the easing of lockdown restrictions, the government have been warned by the industry’s trade body. The British Retail Consortium said a pick-up in April as non-essential stores reopened should not be seen as evidence of full recovery and urged ministers to make good on their promises of reform to business rates.”
The business rates system (local property tax for commercial premises) is a tax travesty of the highest order. It has been draining cashflow from retailers for decades and is long overdue for reform. The scamdemic has crystallised the worst effects as retailers file for bankruptcy citing excess fixed costs of which business rates are one of the larger items.
“However, this Sales growth is fragile. There is little competition for share of spending while parts of hospitality, leisure, and tourism remain restricted and inner-cities and town centres continue to perform poorly as many people continue to work from home.”
Dickinson said there were 530,000 people working in retail still on furlough, adding that he end of wage subsidies and full business rate relief jeopardised the future of many stores and the jobs of those who depend on them.

Thanks Steve and you are so right. Our problems are immense and I feel that we are only in the early stages of a battle for our lives and our children’s lives. This has all been predicted in the Fourth Turning and it is turning out to be a big one this cycle.
I have faith that we will emerge, albeit with much damage and loss of life, into a new system which may not be what we would wish for but at least will be gentle on mankind.
In the meantime, let good music soothe our hearts. 🙂
AP, I caught the end of the Jeremy Vine show yesterday and there were some interesting stories from ‘non essential’ businesses with their experience during lockdown. A lady who did decorated balloons for corporate events now does individual commissions for people at home. A man who supplied things like glitter disco balls and confetti for events has seen his orders go up a lot, as people ‘party’ at home. So some non essential businesses have survived and adjusted their approach to doing business. There was also a shed supplier who currently has a 30 week lead time, partly through orders and the lumber shortage that also affects us here in the UK. I think it is unlikely that the high street willnever be the same.

And I agree that some enterprising businesses have adjusted well and even prosper but they must fix the business rates – it’s an appalling mess.
mRNA technology gives world leaders an opportunity to genetically modify the human race. That is why they are pushing it so hard. Humans have been genetically altering plants and animals for centuries in order to get the desired breeds for whatever purpose they desired. Now the people who run the world have the chance to do that with their fellow human beings. To make a race of compliant drones who will do as they are told and not cause problems or expect to be sovereign or have rights.
In order to accomplish this though, they need to establish total and complete acceptance of whatever “vaccine” they are promoting at the time. Obviously, their control is threatened if there is less than total compliance.
They are experimenting now with social pressure and propaganda to see what effectiveness and on which groups those methods work. Expect in the future to see mandatory methods in which draconian measures up to and including prison are used to force compliance.
You see, slavery was never abolished, it was only improved, and now it will be perfected….
