Sure They Will

The temperature in the on the Moon is said to be negative 280 degrees Fahrenheit when it gets dark.

Hope it comes with it’s own block heater.

Fortunately it only gets up to 270 degrees in daylight.

Lockheed, GM Team-Up To Develop Next-Gen Lunar Rover For Astronauts

Lockheed Martin and General Motors are teaming to develop the next-generation lunar vehicle for NASA’s upcoming Artemis missions to the Moon.

The Artemis program aims to land astronauts on the lunar surface by the midpoint of the decade. For exploration purposes, astronauts will need “surface mobility that is critical to enable and sustain long-term exploration of the lunar surface. These next-generation rovers will dramatically extend the range of astronauts,” a Lockheed press release read.

The new lunar vehicle “may allow astronauts to explore the lunar surface in unprecedented fashion and support discovery in places where humans have never gone before,” the defense contract continued.

“This alliance brings together powerhouse innovation from both companies to make a transformative class of vehicles,” said Rick Ambrose, executive vice president, Lockheed Martin Space. “Surface mobility is critical to enable and sustain long-term exploration of the lunar surface. These next-generation rovers will dramatically extend the range of astronauts as they perform high-priority science investigation on the Moon that will ultimately impact humanity’s understanding of our place in the solar system.”

NASA’s request for a next-generation lunar vehicle comes as GM, more than half a century ago, helped Boeing to create the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) for the Apollo mission to the Moon in 1969.

“General Motors made history by applying advanced technologies and engineering to support the Lunar Rover Vehicle that the Apollo 15 astronauts drove on the Moon,” said Alan Wexler, senior vice president of Innovation and Growth at General Motors. “Working together with Lockheed Martin and their deep-space exploration expertise, we plan to support American astronauts on the Moon once again.”

GM will leverage its battery-electric technologies and propulsion systems to allow the rover to have a much greater range than the electric Apollo LRV. It will also incorporate autonomous, self-driving systems that will enable the rover to prepare for human landings, provide payload services, and allow astronauts to explore farther distances.

Lockheed Martin said the lunar rover is “being designed to traverse significantly farther distances to support the first excursions of the moon’s south pole, where it is cold and dark with more rugged terrain.”

Waste of money….that we don’t have.

Also, there’s no atmosphere up there, so nothing to diffuse the sunlight and warmth; in other words, if one is standing in direct solar light, s/he is blasted by that 270-degree heat and radiation, but if one steps in another’s shadow, or falls in a crater, it’s -280. There is no safe haven. So good luck driving a moon buggy with the sun behind you.

But since we never drove moon buggies up there anyway, this is all a scam to get more money out of us.

Why do we need a “Next-Gen?” Aren’t there 4 or 5 sitting up there; low mileage, almost new?

They tried that but, they kept getting bombarded with unsolicited telephone marketing calls telling them that the buggy warranty had expired.

Then, the LDOT (lunar department of transportation) got wind of the situation, solar wind, that is. They demanded to know the VIN and were in the process of calculating the unpaid property taxes and fines for not turning in the license plate, and fines for not carrying proof of insurance.

And then, there is always the Lunar PoPo.comment image

The original Lunar Buggy was built at Boeing By Bill (or Bob) Fairbanks (rip)
and Jesse Blue. I was in on a project with Bill Fairbank’s boys and Jesse
was a Work Colleague/Friend at a Redmond Boeing subcontractor machine shop.
The way the Fairbanks family, and Jesse recalled the story, it was built almost
like a hobby project, with piecing it together with what they could find, and
what they could figure out themselves. (It apparently wasn’t totally
thought out and perfectly engineered from the beginning of the project.)

Both men qualified as Geniuses in their own right. Much later in life,
Jesse became sort of a Legend, the type of legend nobody talks much about.
In the show “Breaking Bad”, there were batches of Meth that came out “Blue”.
Jesse’s Blue, – – – A tongue in cheek “Tip of the Hat”, to a man and his
recipe book.

They’ll probably launch the fucker without some of the unobtainable micro chips. It’ll get shitty mileage, fer sure. Just like GM is doing with trucks and SUVs now.

I always wondered where did they store the Apollo lunar rover. What compartment held it? It had to be over 8 feet from the ground. Was there a boom to lower it. We never did see how the rover was lowered or where it was stored.
Good thing I have complete confidence in NASA to tell the truth. I trust them…

They weighed 460 pounds. What were the 460 pounds they threw out from the previous missions?

Fair question, I didn’t know the details either. Google ‘deploying Apollo lunar rover’ to see how it was done. You could have done this search first, learned something, and saved yourself posting this silly comment.

You went to Google for your source of information. Then seemed satisfied that you “learned” something. Then you act superior to those who don’t know what your enlightened self does and insult them.

You’re everything that’s wrong with our country.

So now I have to hit you with logic, which you’ll probably ignore but nonetheless, here it is:

Lurker and Squid,
Enlarge the Lander photo and look closely at the panels. You can see the seams wide open. It looks like a school kids project made from 29 gauge sheet metal with a few sheet metal screws every here and there. Nice blast crater under it and it was very nice of them to meticulously clean the landing pads. Not a speck of dirt……….
C’mon, really????

Lurker and Squid,
Look closely at the panels on this science fair project. The panels ( 29 gauge sheet metal?) seams are wide open in many places and bent with some sheet metal screws placed every here and there. Nice blast crater and wasn’t it nice of them to meticulously clean the landing pads for da purty pictures.
C’mon……..

I missed the folding part, will it fold up into a suitcase like the original one? The original one was a stroke of genius, between passing through the van allen radiation belts and the compact dune buggy, the US really was ahead of its time back in the 60s.

It was actually a Trabant.

The Trabant is an automobile produced from 1957 to 1990 by former East Germans.

And, yet, it will take the Corps of Engineers, U.S. Steel, the Ironworkers Union, and DARPA at least 18 months to fix a crack in the DeSoto/I-40 bridge over the Mississippi.

Somebody’s lying.

If GM is involved I hope the Astronauts are OK running with one head light. It seems like 90% of vehicles on the road with a headlight out is a GM product.

Have you ever watched the video of the supposed lunar rover? Given that the moon has 1/6 the gravity of earth, you would naturally assume the dust being kicked up by the rover would go six times higher in the air, probably at least 4 feet, but that is not the case. Instead the dust off the tires goes no higher that what you would expect to see on earth only slowed down for effect.
