I don’t believe that the current 18-24 year olds will EVER be called the “greatest generation.”

Opening scene from Saving Private Ryan. My father operated those landing craft when he was in the navy. He’s one of the few surviving WWII vets. He survived because he drove those craft in the Pacific, not in Europe. Youtube has it age restricted…

Are you implying it was safer island hopping in the Pacific than the one landing event in France? Some of those Marines and Army individuals, as well as the Navy men piloting the landing craft, had to take multiple islands. The Pacific was extremely bloody.

Congrats to your dad. Many cox ‘suns did not go in to the beach and dropped the ramps short in the Pacific landings. Many marines drowned with the 60# + packs on their backs. My dad was lucky to make the beach on Iwo and last two weeks before being shot. 11 landing craft were lost on the assault on Iwo Jima.

Key-righst, YES!

Jimmy Green, the British captain who ferried them to the beach, was horrified when he learned that every lad from his landing craft had been killed. It would haunt him for the rest of his life. “I was in some way responsible for putting them there,” he said. “I can still see those fresh-faced boys getting out of the boat.”

Some people live with mental blinders. I wish I could do that. No way that a war of repetitive D-Days would be winnable. Repetitive Pacific island hops were practical, though not from the perspective of sacrosanct life, proven false again. 💩

I see the link “Emigrate While You Still Can!” at the bottom of this article. Whatever happened to “these colors don’t run”? Don’t worry.. we won’t judge you poorly for leaving.. its tough to compete with the college educated “elite” folks these days, I’m guessing. (I retired at 31, so I wouldn’t actually know.)

Well, you know what they say… don’t let the door hit you on the ass on your way out. 😛

That’s your argument? That’s your pitch? And you are retired at 31? That’s exactly why I’d like to go somewhere better.

True. That’s why I said would like to. I must credit the Jews of the past 2K+ years that have made themselves welcome in alien lands. I wish I had money and that skill.

Actually, its a really good thing that Stalin and the Soviet Army had mostly defeated Hitler by the time we landed in Europe or the death totals would likely have been even larger.

Greatest generation? Meh! They got free boat rides and a day at the beach. And then fun games like dodge the bullets and mortars…

Follow it to it’s inevitable conclusion.

Well…another way to see the greatest generation’s contribution is as good little german cautionary tales. Some knew that before/during. With the Machiavellian intrigues – always part & parcel – that came to light, slowly, afterwards, not knowing it now is on the fooled yet again. Tho I will grant that triple cog dis/stilled is on order of genetic modification, & that there’s no recovering from that.

Light brigades are light, & whether that’s in the loafers or in the brains, doesn’t matter at all.

Some of those Pacific islands could have been skipped completely. But what’s the use of having Marines if they can’t be used up? Herd culling ain’t any newer an idea than war is.

And “new ideas” for getting the fodder to rush to volunteer – like these syringe jabs – are just variations on theme, too.

FWIW a number of Japanese-held Pacific islands WERE skipped. I suspect that islands with significant airfields and port facilities were at the top of the list.

Also FWIW a (much older) friend of mine landed on Omaha Beach on June 6. He was the only man in his landing craft who survived; all others were among the 10,000 who died.

They had no planes or ships left to use those ports and airstrips. We wanted the practice and the propaganda value. Made it easier to sell the public on why we needed to nuke them twice when they were already trying desperately to surrender. The Emperor had even agreed to abdicate, which had been the last sticking point.

If they were such a great generation, they wouldn’t have fought for the wrong side and then spawned the boomers. I blame their parents.

Amen on fathering the baby boomers. They were obviously conditioned in boot camp and them by the war experience. I think they are the ones who made ‘Made in America’ a stamp of quality. Couldn’t raise children worth a damn. Let’s let government do it, and women.

Men, in or out of government are scarcer than hens teeth. We are a well cowed nation where revolt is unthinkable and knowledge is unattainable by them due to what the Catholics would call Ill Will.
Translated that means they don’t want you f—-ng waking them up. They still have the couch and chips and a cheap I phone and the roof don’t leak yet.

Conditioned is as conditioned does. A/C is, & chocolates in the box are, installed at the factory. Not aftermarket.

So B(oomer)LM & BLdon’tM are equally fundamentally erroneous attributions.

Without enough imagination, also factory installed, it’s all ‘mental escapism.’

Wars happen when the government tells you who the enemy is.
Revolutions happen when you finally figure it out for yourself.

They recognized the “fascists” when they were wearing Italian and German uniforms, but failed to recognize them when they got home because they were wearing suits and ties and running the country.
