SUNDAY MORNING CLASSICS ON TBP

A collaboration of: “The Classic Music Mafia”
nkit, Austrian Peter, and Steve C.

Every Sunday morning we present selections for our TBP family to enjoy.

We present symphonies, ensembles, quartets, octets, etc.

Not all of our music is strictly ‘classical’. We may stray a little, but we strive to make all of our selections ‘classy’.

We offer tips on proper ‘symphony etiquette’ and even some selections that are a bit light-hearted and fun aimed at a younger audience. Those pieces will be so designated, and might be a good way to introduce kids to a world of music that they might not have been exposed to or think of as old and ‘stuffy’.

A full symphony will run as long as it will. We don’t want to cut a symphony short. However, we also include some shorter pieces that we try to keep under fifteen minutes in length. You can sample each and hopefully find one or more that pleases you.

We hope that you enjoy our Sunday selections.

This week’s feature comes to us thanks to ursel doran.

Boogie Stupid

Today, I want to introduce, to those of you that are not familiar with them, The DR Big Band, or the Danish Radio Big Band. They are not to be confused with The Danish National Symphony Orchestra DNSO) that I have played here before. No, this is something completely different, but fantastic none-the-less.

The DR Big Band was organized in 1964 in Copenhagen. Over the years, many a great musician has played with them. It is an elite band, globally.

Today, under the direction of the incredibly talented musician, composer and conductor, Miho Hazama. You can wiki her to read about her extensive learning, accolades and accomplishments. She is very good, and a favorite of the band.

I recently posted a piece from the DNSO that featured the great Hans Ulrik on Saxophone. He is well known worldwide for his sax numbers. So, I decided to find some more of his work, went down that rabbit hole, and soon hit on the DR Big Band where he played for awhile. It has introduced me to some other great musicians – some that you will see and hear from today.

So let’s kick it off with a great piece titled “Boogie Stupid.”

I’ll follow that with a short piece titled “What are you doing the Rest of Your Life.”

It features Hans Ulrik.

It is a tribute to “Master Fatman” who you can wiki easily enough if you are interested.

Peet’s Feet

I’ll close this out with another piece featuring Mr. Ulrik. It is titled “Peet’s Feet.”

Listen…can you tell the difference between a piano that costs $500, and one that costs $2.5 million?

Don’t know about a pianos “sound”, but I can definitely tell the difference between a $500 or $5,000 guitar/bass….. At least as a player….
Furthermore, if the musician is honest, (I can’t watch the video, as we don’t have streaming bandwidth here on the boat), I’d say that HE can tell the difference in the way the keys react and the felt on the hammers and mute. Probably also the ring of the strings. I know that there’s a VAST difference in string quality and longevity for basses and guitars, and the same has to be true of piano strings. That’s why I pay ~$50 per pack for my bass strings rather than the cheap $20 sets.
ALSO: A “Grand” Piano has longer strings, (most importantly the bass ones), than an upright, thereby giving them better resonance and longer sustain. This is the same reason all 9 of my bass guitars are “long” scale, rather than medium or short scale instruments.
I can’t speak to the $2,500,000 one, but simply put, a more expensive instrument is going to be built with a higher quality tonewood and greater attention to detail. This is ALWAYS more noticeable with fully acoustic instruments, but also holds true with electric ones too.

I have been wondering for some time when I frequently play the “Don’t cry For me Argentina”,
who and where the TWO THOUSAND member choral group was assembled.
Many thanks to your superior work reveals it was the French!!

The “Big Band” selections are great selections for some change of pace!!

Here is another Khatia submission that just popped up this morning of a complex piece where she has to read the music, which is quite rare for her.

Great picks this week, guys!

We saw these two in Wheeling accompanied by strings from Wheeling symphony.

Opened for Elton John.

One of the best concerts I’ve ever been to.
