On occasion, celebrating the midweek hump with a meticulously curated selection of the most disrespectful, impolite, disgraceful, badass, head-banging, disturbing, irreverent, rebellious, most enjoyable rock n roll of its time feels like a perfectly responsible thing to do, for some reason. Or no reason at all. Crank it up!
A fascinating look at the stories behind many of the top singles produced in the modern era, based on music historian Marc Myers’ columns in the WSJ.
An early rock n roll back-beat, circa 1952. Little Richard & Lloyd Price – Lawdy Miss Clawdy
Rap? WTF? RUN DMC – Walk This Way ft. Aerosmith
Served up hot n tasty, 80’s glam style. RATT – Round And Round
Ain’t no mojo like it. The Cadillac Three – Tennessee Mojo
Grab a shovel. Static-X – I’m With Stupid
The Little Richard recording was well after 1952.
Many thanks for the tunes!
So, I just learned a few weeks ago, that Nathanial Rateliff was my sisters neighbor at her old house. He’d been to her house a number of times and even had given her some songwriting tips.
Some of his songs are so good, they beggar belief:
We listen to Nathaniel and the Night Sweats all the time. Love his stuff.
But written in ’52.
I had forgotten about XTC. Very solid band.
This is my favorite song of theirs, a bit of a deep track, I think.
This popped up this morning in my searches. Listening to it takes me back to my young and carefree days of my early 20’s. I lived with a beautiful girlfriend, we were poor but didn’t mind it, and spent our days enjoying life’s simple things like camping by a creek in the woods or hiking in the summer sun.
I had not a responsibility in the world but those days and that relationship wouldn’t last.
Ok. Today is the day I do a primer on Marcy Playground. You remember, the “one hit wonder” who did Sex and Candy?
Only issue. I have five albums worth of their stuff and that song (though solid) is middle of the pack at best.
Here’s some other stuff:
This got a little radio play:
This is arguably their best song. Very well crafted:
Almost as if written for TBP:
A terrific cover:
There’s 50 others I could post. Check them out. I think they would be very big, but they hate the way the music business is run.
You have done this before, and I have appreciated it, thanks. They are a really fine band.
Thanks.
Thanks again, good stuff.
Thanks for sharing. I remember the outrage from the rockers when Run DMC teamed up with Aerosmith.
