The United States Air Force launches Operation Ranch Hand, a “modern technological area-denial technique” designed to expose the roads and trails used by the Viet Cong.
Flying C-123 Providers, U.S. personnel dumped an estimated 19 million gallons of defoliating herbicides over 10-20 percent of Vietnam and parts of Laos between 1962-1971. Agent Orange–named for the color of its metal containers–was the most frequently used defoliating herbicide. The operation succeeded inn killing vegetation, but not in stopping the Viet Cong. The use of these agents was controversial, both during and after the war, because of the questions about long-term ecological impacts and the effect on humans who either handled or were sprayed by the chemicals.
Beginning in the late 1970s, Vietnam veterans began to cite the herbicides, especially Agent Orange, as the cause of health problems ranging from skin rashes to cancer to birth defects in their children. Similar problems, including an abnormally high incidence of miscarriages and congenital malformations, have been reported among the Vietnamese people who lived in the areas where the defoliating agents were used.

My professor said Dioxin was shaped like a dime and could slip into the DNA helix anywhere and screw up its’ functioning, the exact mutation depended on the location, which could be almost infinite. Dioxin is a very stable compound. Like many carcinogens that can occur naturally in a manufacturing process and are restricted in Europe and Canada, they are generally not in the USA.
Vietnam was the first sign that modern America was declining. There was a temporary recovery after Vietnam that lasted to the 1990’s but after that the rot really set in. In Canada and Western Europe the rot had taken effect even earlier than America
At my LZ at the base of Good Sister Mountain, Tay Ninh Province on the Cambodian border, we were sprayed aerially at least once a week, often more than once weekly with AO. I kinda liked the smell. May as well like it, nothing I could do about it anyway.
Had my first skin cancer fifty years ago at age twenty three. I’m looking right now at 17 fresh stiches on my L wrist from a squamus (phonetic spelling) cell cancer. I go back on the twenty-fourth to have them removed. They’ll cut out a big basil cell on my back at that time. My back looks like the moon without the Sea of Tranquility.
I’m luckier than a lot of other guys.
