InnovaFeed aims to bring insect-based protein ingredients to snacks and sports nutrition products as soon as this year
InnovaFeed uses a zero-waste vertical farming model to breed black soldier flies
Black soldier flies for breakfast, lunch or dinner? Paris-based biotech company InnovaFeed is investing in a future where this could be an everyday possibility.
First, the company is partnering with Archer-Daniels-Midland Co. ADM, +0.93% to bring the ingredient to pet food.
InnovaFeed has announced a partnership with ADM’s pet food division to expand the sustainable pet food industry into the use of insect protein. The move also marks InnovaFeed’s expansion into the U.S. market.
Black soldier flies have been recognized as an inexpensive and eco-friendly protein source for animals and fish. U.S. regulation now allows the inclusion of black soldier fly in dog food.
InnovaFeed’s proprietary technology brings the black soldier fly, or Hermetia Illucens, “back to its rightful place at the heart of the food chain,” the company says.
For ADM, the partnership is a chance to expand the company’s animal nutrition business, which was up 19% to $940 million in the fourth quarter.

“Pet solutions is a strategic growth opportunity for ADM, with $100 billion in demand growing 4.5% a year,” said Jorge Martinez, president of ADM pet solutions, in a statement announcing the InnovaFeed partnership.
“Pet owners increasingly are demanding the same kind of sustainable, healthy products they eat themselves.”
The move towards greater “pet humanization” alongside a surge in pet adoptions during the COVID-19 pandemic has given companies like Petco Health & Wellness Co. WOOF, +3.78% and others a quarterly earnings boost.

Moreover, diners are increasingly concerned about climate change, and the impact their purchases and consumption are having on the environment. Beyond Meat Inc. BYND, +1.05%, Impossible Foods and a slew of other plant-based food companies; fast-food chains like McDonald’s Corp. MCD, +0.09% and Yum Brands Inc.’s YUM, -0.09% KFC; and even meat companies like Tyson Foods Inc. TSN, -0.38% are creating and investing in animal meat alternatives that promise to not only taste good to humans, but lessen the impact that people’s meals have on the Earth.

The global insect protein market across plants, animals and humans is expected to grow to $113 billion in the next few years, according to data provided by InnovaFeed. The company plans to begin research and development operations at what it says is the world’s largest insect-protein manufacturing facility in Decatur, Ill. later this year. And the company sees the U.S. as a “promising market” for launching ingredients for human consumption in 2022, including sports nutrition products, healthy snacks and meat alternatives.
“It’s digestible and adaptable to human needs,” said Clément Ray, co-founder and chief executive of InnovaFeed, on a video call with MarketWatch, adding that the amino acid profile of the black soldier fly is “much closer to what humans need than plant protein.”
One of the big hurdles for companies offering plant-based alternatives is mimicking the taste of animal-based products. Ray says black soldier flies have that covered as well.
“As an ingredient, it’s good,” he said. “You don’t need to add things to enhance the flavoring.”
To be sure, humans all over the world are already eating insects as snacks and even fine dining options.
But InnovaFeed says wider consumption will lower the carbon footprint of the food system, with about 20% of current global carbon emissions coming from the food industry. The company’s vertical farming model is zero waste and uses fewer resources than widely used animal feed.
“Everyone wants products that are good for health and good for the planet with a good taste,” Ray said.

The new $30 million grant program from the Health and Human Services (HHS) department will provide funds to local governments and nonprofits for “smoking kits/supplies,” according to the Washington Free Beacon.

I don’t believe it has anything to with potential future environment DoNY (but who knows at this point and it wouldn’t surprise me).
As a guy who has grown 150 fruit/nut trees and 5k-10k heads of garlic for the local market for almost 20 years, I will call bullshit right now on “vertical farming” for anything but a few crops. Main, staple crops and the majority of fruit/veggies will not perform well (or at all) in vertical farming. Plant-wise and economically.
There are benefits for some products from indoor/vertical. Growing lettuce/greens indoors is possible economically. Herbs, too. But those foods have little nutritional value and are, basically, weeds – they’ll grow in crap conditions and really outperform in controlled conditions. The average person has no idea (literally, none at all) how to grow anything, let alone grow it in commrecial quantities, harvest it, cure it and get it to market in a format that will sell. To them indoor/vertical seems like some kind of miracle. You find it’s not when time reading about is put in and you realize it’s a con on the level of windmills.
Now, if the Criminals In Charge start throwing subsidies at indoor/vertical farming….then all bets are off. Anything can be grown commerically with subsidies because true cost is irrelevant. California garlic takes, on average, 75 gallons of water per pound above and beyond natural rain fall. In the midwest, that number is often zero and in “high use” years, it’s maybe 5 gallons per pound. Who cares when water is “free”?
For the Blackflies, there is a “bidding-game” going on. How do you get what you want? Ask for WAY more.
How do I get Blackflies accpeted – and demanded in the future – for animal feed? I start saying it should be for Human feed! I increase my “ask”. And Voila! People start thinking, “I’m not eating that shit, but I guess I might eat a chicken that was already eating flies and other insects whenever they found them, anyway”.
And BOOM – now there is a market for flies…to feed to animals…in commercial quantity.

I watched the entire Cosby series for you, goes something like this-
Rich, powerful celebrities attract young females who readily go to their hotel room with them, drink what they are offered, take the pills that are passed out, regret it and then go back and repeat it over and over until they realize he isn’t going to share his wealth/access to stardom with them and then they go on with their lives. Many years later they regret their behavior and instead of questioning whether or not they actually possess agency, free will and good judgment, decide instead to join in a lawsuit to cash in on their status as victims.
I have zero respect for Cosby and his hypocritical posturing, but we all know that power corrupts and he exudes creepiness and anyone with two eyeballs could see it. He was an entertainer, not a paragon of moral authority. How people confused those two is a mystery.
It is equally difficult to respect anyone with the kind of self awareness these women seemed to exhibit. Their judgment was non-existent. There were one or two who clung to the story that they were slipped something without their knowledge, but most of them admitted that he was up front about it and they readily accepted the offer of drink and drugs. All of them went off alone with him.
Here’s a tip for any young women- or men for that matter- who care to listen to an old man.
Before you do something you may regret later on in life, consider the consequences of your actions first. Not one single one of the women in that series wound up drugged and raped because of Bill Cosby dragging them into an alley, but rather because they willfully chose to get up nice and cozy with celebrity thinking some of it might rub off. If a man invites you to their motel room their is zero chance it is for any reason other than to have sex. Period. Ever. How any adult human being could not know this is a mystery for the ages and it doesn’t help feminism’s claims of gender equality to portray this seemingly endless string of victims as hopeless naifs. You either have the freedom to make choices and accept the consequences or you do not. You can’t have it both ways.
I have invented a new substance called kyliyomptonite, which I dab just a touch on the back of black flies, put them in a jar with two electrodes protruding from the lid, which then uses induction to derive unlimited power from the incessant buzzing of flies within the jar.
