Poor people. Really, I mean really, poor people. It’s said some people have issues with their thyroids or some other health issue. Who knows the “truth” straight across the board? Use to be an all you can eat place on the Arkansas side of Texarkana. In 2004+- some distant family members asked if I wanted to eat there with them. Several of the family were in the 300lb +- range themselves. $14 , they raved, all the shite you can eat. I severely lost my appetite noticing those patrons at that restuarant filling their plates 6″ tall then went back for seconds. Never know, gluttony or some health issue. If people want to be a fat ass, be a fat ass, it’s a free country. Some may have issues out of their control. Just saying.

My wife is constantly asking me if something looks “stupid”, typically her shoes or a scarf. My tastes are known to be completely different from hers so I take this as an indication she thinks it does not look right. I take a moment to look at her outfit and if it looks OK to me, I say so. If it looks a bit off, I don’t say anything and she changes.

On a wedding date with a super nurse, she said that I never compliment her and she gestured to her lovely dress.
Just then a seagull shit all over her dress, Maine seagulls can do that. What a smelly mess.
I said cheerily, “Your dress looks great, except for that bird shit.”

“Stupid” is an odd choice of words, since the inanimate objects are incapable of intelligent thought. Does she mean that it makes her look stupid? Stupid that she put it on, thinking that it might look good on her?

“Ugly” versus “pretty” might be what I would choose. But then again, unless we are going to a party, I don’t really care. And even for very few parties I care. If it keeps me warm, is clean, smells good, and has no holes, that’s already 95% of the battle.

I don’t now why she uses it, but she does. She is a perfectionist when it comes to her public presentation. When we had the lake house, she would not go out until hair was fully fixed and make-up applied. The good thing is she always looks beautiful, even at our advanced ages.

Speaking of shoes, I’ll say this, while my wife does not own a pair, the ULTRA HIGH high heals, whatever they are called, simply look “stupid” to me. I don’t know how women , or perhaps transvestites walk in them.

Then again, “fair and balanced”, I suppose some ladies find it “stupid” looking some bubba like I typically see around these parts wearing jeans so tight they cannot prevent the top 3-4 inches of their ass showing. See them frequently at Wall Mart. Just being “honest”. Buy a pair of jeans that cover your crack, you’ve obviously put on some pounds since those you are wearing “may” have fit properly at one time.

I jokingly told a friend at the bar, after he asked what my wife was doing these days, that she was still kick-starting the Boeings at Heathrow. Problem is, I said too loudly, she overheard and I spent the rest of the weekend in the doghouse on the couch! But that was years ago – now I spend all the time on the couch! 🙂 She’s South African you know – and lives up to the image of the female being the most lethal of the species.

One lie requires another lie to cover up the first lie. Pretty soon you are stumbling all over the lies trying to figure out which lie you told to cover which. I don’t ask my husband questions that I don’t want the answer to🤣

That said, I can honestly say that I have been guilty of lying.

I don’t know of any scriptures about lying except to not bear false witness against someone. That is more of an admonishment to not lie in order to place blame. To tell someone they look fine when in fact they look anything but fine hardly rise to that threshold. I don’t think anything can be gained from telling someone that you think they are ugly as homemade sin and no amount of makeup or nice clothes will make them presentable to polite society.

There are many verses about lying, esp in the book of Proverbs. Bearing false witness, as stated in the ten commandments, means when you go before a judge you must not misrepresent the truth in any way.

Scripture gives us the example of Rahab hiding the spies and lying about it. That lie saved their lives. There is no commentary in Scripture condemning her for that lie, however, I don’t believe that the silence is an endorsement for lying, as the rest of Scripture condemns lying. Therefore, I think that it may be OK to lie *to the enemy in wartime,* but otherwise it is entirely unethical to lie.

There are lies; and then there are LIARS.

John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Agree with the sentiment. Unfortunately, that is the one of the govt favorite tactics, to get you in a lie to them, any lie, no mater how small, and throw the book at you for false statements to them. Better to not answer their question(s) if you intend to lie about it. No comment or, if the situation warrants, plead the 5th.

Is this question for regulah people or government lackeys?

If a government lackey’s lips are moving, they are lying and feel extremely justified in their lying. They however they expect you to be truthful in all dealings with them….REALLY? We may need to rethink this.

Regarding regulah people, if it avoids hurting someone, maybe. The Good Book says to tell the truth, so I’m guessing that the government does not read the Good Book.

Interesting little article about popular lies which most of us probably do not consider lies. The blurb about lying in self-defense at the end (now that I put it there) is worth a scan.

Otherwise? NO COMMENT

The 20 Most Popular Lies We Tell Every Day
https://www.lawyersmutualnc.com/blog/the-20-most-popular-lies-we-tell-every-day

It’s the political season, and charges of lying are flying.

But is there a difference between little lies (aka fibs, white lies, stretchers, dodges, evasions) and big lies (aka whoppers)?

And do we know why we lie?

The answers are “yes” and “for the most part.”

One study published in the Journal of Basic and Applied Psychology found that the average American lies three times in a 10 minute conversation. In another study, college students admitted lying between once and twice a day.

And in Great Britain, a survey revealed that men tell six lies a day while women average three. Men lied most about their drinking habits, while women tended to lie to hide their true feelings.

20 Common Lies

I’m fine, nothing’s wrong.
I was stuck in traffic.
You look great in that [insert article of clothing here].
I only had one beer.
My phone died.
I had no way to contact you.
I never got the message.
I’ll call you right back.
It didn’t cost that much.
It was on sale.
Oh, this old thing? I’ve had it for ages.
I’m on the way.
Thanks, it’s just what I’ve always wanted.
You’ve lost weight.
You haven’t changed a bit.
I didn’t touch it.
I have no idea where it is.
I’ll try to make it.
I have a headache.
I would never lie to you.

Lying as Self-Defense

Most prevarications fall under the category of little fibs. We tell them to avoid social conflict (“Lunch at Burger King sounds good to me.”) or hurting someone’s feelings (“What a lovely necktie!”). Generally, these lies do no harm and, in fact, make life easier.

So it was unsurprising that in the British study, 75 percent of respondents said it was “acceptable” to lie in order to spare someone’s feelings.

The bigger – and more destructive – lies aren’t intended to protect the social fabric. They’re told to protect our own self-image. When our ideal self is contradicted by reality, we lie to build ourselves up.

“We find that as soon as people feel that their self-esteem is threatened, they immediately begin to lie at higher levels,” says one psychologist.

Personally, I always go to the words of my favorite author, Mark Twain …

– If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything.

– Carlyle said ‘a lie cannot live.’ It shows that he did not know how to tell them.

– One of the most striking differences between a cat and a lie is that a cat has only nine lives.

– A man is never more truthful than when he acknowledges himself a liar.

– Of all the animals, man is the only one that lies.

– A little lie can travel half way ’round the world while Truth is still lacing up her boot- Figures often beguile me, particularly when I have the arranging of them myself; in which case the remark attributed to Disraeli would often apply with justice and force: “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.”

-The Bible has noble poetry in it… and some good morals and a wealth of obscenity, and upwards of a thousand lies.

-Look at the mother of Washington! She raised a boy that could not tell a lie–could not tell a lie! But he never had any chance. It might have been different if he had belonged to the Washington Newspaper Correspondents’ Club

I hold a strict literal interpretation to Revelation 21:8 below (emphasis, mine);

I think that Ayn Rand said it best about lying:

“People think that a liar gains a victory over his victim. What I’ve learned is that a lie is an act of self-abdication, because one surrenders one’s reality to the person to whom one lies, making that person one’s master, condemning oneself from then on to faking the sort of reality that person’s view requires to be faked…The man who lies to the world, is the world’s slave from then on…There are no white lies, there is only the blackest of destruction, and a white lie is the blackest of all.”

JimN, this quote is the type of thing that I had in mind when making the comment that follows yours. When we are hesitant about being honest because of PC or otherwise, we are not being true to ourselves or to our reality. When you surrender your reality, you must keep up the charade so as not to blow your cover. How can we build good relationships when the person who we present to others is not our true self?

Vigilant
Vigilant
February 15, 2022 11:49 am

Political Correctness has taught people to be touchy about hurting someone’s feelings. Of course we should be sensitive to others, but PC causes people to be less than truthful on so many levels. It spills over onto personal relationships. Personally, I’d like an honest answer when I ask someone a question. How do you build relationships without honesty?

SHORTER ANSWER:

I believe it depends on the motive of the liar. Real liars lie to protect themselves or for gain. So I used to tell my kids never to lie in order to cover their ass or to make themselves look cool. In other words, be real and own your mistakes.

LONGER ANSWER (FOR ANY WHO CARE AND HAVE TIME TO READ):

As I have mentioned in previous articles here, I help out the ancient fossils at the local school bus garage by driving a school bus part-time. Four days a week I will transport junior high advanced math, band, choir, and orchestra kids. The schools have a system whereby on “A” days some of these students are dropped at different locations for the music shuttles; as opposed to “B” days.

Driving a bus can be repetitious. So much so it becomes quite like Bill Murray in the movie “Groundhog Day”. Each morning and afternoon there is a commercial choreography, if you will, dancing to the metronomic ticking of the clock. As I approach this intersection, the same adults will be waiting for the city bus that will round the corner to my right… exactly… now. Those plumbing trucks will be exiting that parking lot at this time, and this guy who is always wearing the same hat will be walking his Collie along that fence line at the same time every day.

So, in order to prevent boredom, I’m always on the lookout for things that are different – even the little variances and it keeps me always paying attention. In other words, I don’t miss much.

For two years now, I have been shuttling an advanced math student who is painfully shy. She is one of those “invisible” girls. The other kids sit towards the back of the bus and are constantly laughing and having fun. But this girl always sits up near the front by herself and just stares out the window. She has straight blond hair, never makes eye contact with anyone, and she doesn’t dress as stylish as the other girls. Honestly, I have never seen one student on the bus engage with her in any way.

So, one day, quite some time ago, she was sitting in the seat directly behind me and I said: “Hey you, right behind me, what’s your name?” She looked up at me like she was in physical pain and I could see her eyes in my student mirror and they looked like the ocean during a storm. She mumbled something that started with an “M” and I wondered if she didn’t have a stutter or some sort of speech defect.

I said: “Madeline?”

She shook her head and repeated her name. Now it can be hard to hear on the bus, but by reading her lips in the mirror I guessed right: “Madison?” and she nodded in agreement.

So, then I said: “Madison, I forgot, is it an A or B day?” and she said “A”.

Now, I really didn’t forget. I knew it was an “A” day because that’s my job. After all, I would be a pretty incompetent bus driver if I dropped the kids at the wrong school on any given day, ya know?

But, in truth, I utilized deception in order to get her name. This is because, now, every Monday through Friday during the school year, at least one person will be acknowledging her existence and saying her name. Me.

“Hi Madison! How’s your day?”

Or “Have a great afternoon, Madison”

Or “Whassup, Kiddo?”

Or “Take it easy, see ya tomorrow”.

Of course, I don’t overdo saying her name so as to not creep her out, but just enough. Always a “hi” and sometimes with her name. I see you. It means you exist.

She may be autistic, or have some other mental issue, or just be painfully shy,
but your kindness eases her constant fear.
Good man.

I don’t know — but, is telling the truth the opposite of lying? Not sure … but I believe it is …

If so, then a friend of mine from law school had an interesting take on The Truth: Never use the truth as a bludgeon … as an offensive weapon … to hurt someone …

I’ve always considered that to be very good advice …

Whenever I damn well feel like it and for any reason.

And if you don’t like it, you can’t handle the Truth!

“Be honest (heh heh) Is it ever ok to lie? If so, when?”

From reading the Old Testament it seems the Jewish were ok with lying.

Well “absolutely never” is not the correct answer.

When I think about the extremely rare times where I do regret not to have lied,
it was when a SYSTEM used my honesty against me – especially when it was clear the consequences to me were very limited or zero long-term, if the other side had accused me of, or even proven me lying. And if that system was massively acting in an immoral way, to the best of my understanding, it would have been best to help gum it up with a [limited] lie.

I was raised believing a man is only worth as much as his word. I remember my uncle telling me if your word ain’t worth shit, then neither are you.
That being said, it is not always the easy road to take.

I lied on the Census questionnaire. I’m not actually an unmarried black woman with 8 kids living at home.

Whenever dealing with the government.
On everything, no matter how trivial.
And never be consistent.
This is an application of the old GIGO theory; Garbage In, Garbage Out.
Any profile the government is making will be riddled with inconsistency.

Nice one Stucky – thanks for the laughs. But, hold on, I did an article on this not long ago – that’s my answer:

When Lies are Exposed by the Truth– Trust is lost, sometimes Forever
