You’ll never guess who thinks Ukraine is worth fighting for.
The Ukrainians.
While the West simultaneously whines about Vlad and loads up on Russian natural gas, the good citizens of the UKR are putting their blood where their polling data is.
Fair to say this fight was unexpected. I did have a flash on Wednesday – did the Russians really expect to take Ukraine with 30,000 soldiers, a force smaller than the NYPD? – but I assumed that the consensus had to be right.
Maybe not.
The tactical problem – from Russia’s point of view – is twofold. The Ukrainians are fighting harder than Russia expected, and Russia’s preparations appear to have been shoddy, premised on plans for a very fast and easy fight.
Tanks without gasoline are paperweights, which is why the US Army spends so much time and money on logistics. Say what you like about the Pentagon, but it would not let its armored vehicles run out of gas three days into an invasion.
And so with every hour and night that passes, Russia’s overwhelming superiority looks more and more mythical – giving the Ukrainians reason to wonder if they can beat the bear, or at least do enough damage to him to send him back over the border.
This turn of events is both heartening and EXTREMELY dangerous.
The good news: even without much Western help, Ukraine appears to be standing up for itself, exposing the lie that this is anything but a war of conquest.
The bad news: Ukrainian resistance raises the stakes enormously. A quick win would show the dominance of Russia’s military and increase Putin’s leverage over the rest of Eastern Europe. A prolonged fight does the opposite. No one can be overly impressed with Russia’s performance so far.
Maybe the Russian army will suddenly break through. Otherwise, at least some level of escalation appears inevitable.
Of course, Russia has the artillery and air force to level Kiev if it likes. But mass civilian casualties would hardly match the Kremlin’s propaganda. And at some point the West might feel obligated to get involved, whatever the risks.
On the other hand, what if Russia tries to keep the invasion relatively light and casualties mount for weeks or months without a decisive win? I don’t pretend to know the machinations of the Kremlin’s inner circle, and Putin seems to have complete control. But this is his war, and everyone knows it. Could he survive losing it? Would his ego even permit him to walk away?
Of course, it’s very early days yet. Perhaps Russia will break through in the next week.
But with every day that the Ukrainians fight, the risks to Russia and Putin – and thus to the world – mount. We all may have forgotten about RAND and Mutually Assured Destruction and blast radii and the rest, but Putin hasn’t. And the nukes are still there. The risk is very, very low, but it’s a little higher today than it was last week for sure.
So what happens next? The choice – as it has so far – will be the Kremlin’s.
And that’s not a comforting thought.

What are you talking about? It’s already over when the Russians took total control of the airspace. All that is left is just smoke and mirrors.
How did that work out for Russia & the US with the goat herders? Both had 100% air superiority on day one and fought for 1 & 2 decades respectively before slinking home with their tails between their legs.

Alex did a really good job on Covid reporting. He should have stopped while he was ahead. Or, at the very least, stick to what he understands.
Well there is one thing that should wake the liberals up (but won’t). The justification for having the 2nd Amendment is now more clear than ever before. Ukraine is arming every able bodied man to defend their turf. War may involve pushing buttons, flying planes, and driving tanks, but it eventually will come down to combat. The Russians bit off more than they can chew with the resistance they are facing.
I know some may say “just nuke them”. That would be an easy way to kill as many people as possible, but a poor choice if invasion is the goal. Invasion requires ground troops after it is all said and done. As long as their is a rifle behind every blade of grass, it will be almost impossible.
A rifle is just a little more than a water gun when firing at armored vehicles, and how those holding them feel about fighting for those that have boots on their faces all the time is another matter.
Armored vehicles run out fuel eventually…as we see happening right now in Ukraine. Those soldiers need to come out eventually.

Regardless of the circumstances or if they are forced into their role…my point is that armed civilians can be a force to be reckoned with.
I have always held that if a man tells me I have to fight for his cause, which is not mine, or die, and then hands me a loaded weapon, he is the first one I shoot.

I don’t disagree. I am still in the age of conscription if they instated the draft. This assumes that WW3 does erupt and Biden chooses to send us over as cannon fodder. I will not go and will go off grid if need be. I will proudly take up arms and be at the defense of this country, on my own turf. I refuse to go fight in foreign wars on the behalf of maniac world leaders. I have known many good people that have been killed, or wish they did, after coming back all fucked up from the 20+ years spend in the Middle East. If it makes me a “draft dodger”, then so be it.
You can just simplify that to–don’t fight in foreign wars!

Yup. If it goes well for Russia, civilian casualties should be minimal. BTW, Once a civilian is armed, they are no longer considered a civilian by the rules of war.
At some point if things get bogged down, the Russians may decide to use thermobaric bombs (fuel-air). Then the cities basically get nuked, without nukes. It would make for very bad press for the Russians, but since the West is lying its teeth off and already painting them as baby eating monsters, it is not like that is really an issue anyway.
Handing AKs to civilians is just a death sentence for them.

I think his expectation was to devastate the military command and control, destroy the air force and the Ukrainian army would throw down their arms, so he would not have to destroy the country and create more enemies. He misunderstood the willingness of people to fight for their homes and homeland.

A lot of people have volunteered. Someone who is conscripted will surrender at the first sign of danger.

Many Ukranian men of fighting age (using an extended definition of 18-60 of age) are forcefully taken out of cars and buses in the convoy toward the borders while they try to leave the country in this effort of total conscription. It is not like they are all fighting voluntarily.
And why would they? This was over before it began. Ask Napoleon. It appears to me that Putin is trying to avoid civilian casualties as much as possible.
On a side note: Germany is thinking of reinstating mandatory military service for all young men (typically 12-24 months in duration), like they had until the late 1990s.

If there is “resistance” against the russian “invasion” then it is most likely being led by a foreign entity or entities along with their false flag attacks in order to point their finger at the invaders.
Or some people just don’t want the russians back. Even if you despise your own government or were some separatist, doesn’t necessarily mean you welcome foreigners rolling through and fucking your shit up.
Tanks WITH gasoline are also paperweights in the face of a modern military’s attack helicopters and anti-tank planes, like the A-10 Warthog.
Tanks are an anachronism in modern warfare, just as calvary horses became an anachronism at the start of WW I, and battleships by the beginning of WW II (with the ascendance of aircraft carriers).
It is still to be seen how long an aircraft carrier group will last in this day of lasers, rail guns and hypersonic missiles, not to mention a 10,000′ airburst of a nuke over the carrier.
Watching how many tanks avoid that young man tells me that their orders are NOT to scorch earth and kill every Ukranian alive.
