Although my mother’s mother was a Hungarian Jew and blew into my grandfather’s truck on the way up to the front in WW1, my mother was not influenced by all of her mother’s Jewish ways except that as a family, we never ate pork and my father explained that it made mother sick.
So the first time I ate pork was when I was 17 and out with the lads for a boozy night calling into a local Chinese which was all alien to me. They recommended sweet & sour pork as a good start for a beginner – and I liked it! I didn’t tell mother and she passed away never knowing the dreadful truth! However, she was a first class businesswoman and managed dad with adept perfection. The rest is history.
