” I Feel Like I’m Fixin’ To Die Rag ” (Ukrainian Version)

Well, come on all you, big strong men,
Uncle Sam needs your help again.
Got himself in a terrible jam
Way down yonder in Ukrainia
So put down your books and pick up a gun,
We’re gonna have a whole lotta fun.

And it’s one, two, three,
What are we fighting for?
Don’t ask me, I don’t give a damn,
The next stop’s Ukrainia;
And it’s five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain’t no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we’re all gonna die.

Now come on Wall Street, don’t be slow,
Why man, this war’s a go-go
There’s plenty of good money to be made
By supplying the Army with the tools of the trade,
Just hope and pray if they drop the bomb,
They drop it on the Ukrainians.

And it’s one, two, three,
What are we fighting for?
Don’t ask me, I don’t give a damn,
The next stop’s Ukrainia;
And it’s five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain’t no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we’re all gonna die.

Well, come on generals, let’s move fast;
Your big chance is here at last.
Now you can go out and fill`em full of lead
‘Cause the only good Russian is one that’s dead
You know that peace can only be won
When we’ve blown ’em all to kingdom come.

And it’s one, two, three,
What are we fighting for?
Don’t ask me, I don’t give a damn,
The next stop’s Ukrainia;
And it’s five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain’t no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we’re all gonna die.

Now come on mothers throughout the land,
Pack your child off to Ukrainia.
Come on fathers don’t hesitate
Send your own off before it’s too late.
Be the first one on your block
To have your kid come home in a box.

And it’s one, two, three
What are we fighting for?
Don’t ask me, I don’t give a damn,
The next stop’s Ukrainia;
And it’s five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain’t no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we’re all gonna die.

I can always bring my audience members who are “of a certain age,” as they say, and a surprising number of the kids too, to life by pulling out that song.

However, I have a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach that Tom Lehrer’s So Long Mom is the more appropriate tune for the times.

I hear Country Joe is still performing…another great song is “Harlem”….”Maybe you’ll be lucky and Harlem will come to you…”

And Wavy Gravy is still alive to introduce him.

Well done, Steve. Brings back fond memories of the Coyote and his ability to modify lyrics to fit the time. Also fond memories of Country Joe.

Great to have your wonderful perspective Steve – as our world descends into chaos! I am overwhelmed at present keeping so many balls in the air, but I do miss our weekly music exchange – I hope to return one day. Best wishes to all the music mafia! 🙂
