Recycling in North Vancouver

Via International Man

North Vancouver

I don’t know how this is done in Vancouver and its other suburbs, but in North Vancouver, the law mandates compulsory recycling. If you don’t, in addition to a fine, the garbage men (Sanitation Engineers, nowadays) will decline to pick up your refuse.

You are required to do this in, count ‘em, five different major ways! In one bin goes your ordinary garbage: eggshells, coffee grinds, orange peels, chicken bones, banana peels, and other such trash. In the second, debris from your garden: leaves, grass, twigs. A third, the gray box, is devoted to glassware: bottles and jars; however, you may not include drinking glasses, dishes, cookware, ceramics, lightbulbs, therein. A fourth container is a yellow plastic bag devoted to paper, but not wood, hard or soft cover books; keep your dirty rotten plastic bags out of this container too. And, yes, there is a fifth, a blue box: you are permitted to place containers there, but only if you rinse them out; and you, yes, you, had better do a good hygienic job: scrub, scrub scrub. We only want clean garbage. Unwelcome in this category are metal and aerosol cans, foil wrap, plastic waste, wrappings, etc. Where, then, for all this unwanted garbage? A special trip to the recycling depot is scheduled for you. You don’t like all this? Go live somewhere else. This entire system is so complicated.

Moreover, they need five separate pages to explain it all. Also, it keeps changing! You need a Ph.D. in STEM to keep up with it all.

Why this is imposed upon the innocent denizens of North Vancouver is easy to see: we have been overrun by politically correct socialist environmentalists or watermelons (red on the inside, green on the outside). They are more than willing to impose their sky is falling nostrums on the rest of us.

To add insult to injury, garbage pickup is scheduled at 7:30 am. Nor are you allowed to leave your trash on the curb the night before – for good reason this time: the bears will have at it. So the only legal time to set out your rubbish is between 5:30-7:30 am. Not very conducive for late-night owls.

What would private enterprise be like, in contrast, in this industry? One thing is clear, even clearer than your strenuously rinsed-out junk: the customer would come first! Compulsory sorting? Well, maybe. But, then, if so, they would likely pay you to do this; you wouldn’t have to pay them. After all, no jeweler throws out gold fillings or dust that may accumulate near the workbench. This mineral is so valuable it pays well to ensure none of it is ever wasted. And, if newsprint, plastic, or anything else becomes more valuable than the costs of saving it, the free enterprise system will see to it that these goods, too, are preserved.

But there would be competing garbage collectors who might offer you a choice: they pay you if you recycle for them; if not, you pay them for waste removal. And, certainly, they would not impose such early disposal pickup times, at least not for the wealthy people who live in North Vancouver. Poorer folk? Maybe, yes, but then they would likely have to pay less for being imposed upon. But, hey, that’s the way of the economic world. Why try to get rich, and improve the economy, if there are no such benefits?

How is all of this financed? In the public sphere, via taxes, of course. In the private sector, payments in either direction, depending upon the value of the refuse. Presumably, the homeowner would pay the private dump company in most cases. Experts are divided as to which is cheaper, but the presumption is that the competitive struggle leaves private firms “leaner and meaner” than their bureaucratic counterparts, who face no such similar competition.

The dirty little secret is that almost all (save aluminum) of it goes into
the same landfill as all the rest of the trash albeit in
a “recycling” part in case a market for “green” trash emerges they
can dig it back up. Like everything “green”,
it’s all a horseshit scam to let libs think they
are solving a non-existent problem.

They have a very similar program down here in the Other Vancouver.
I call them The Garbage Nazis.
They even went so far as to drop off yet another small container with a lid for “Meat Waste”
I picked that fucker up and threw it in their plastic recycling bin for their trouble.
The Wife takes care of most of this horse shit.
I get around it all by filling Contractor garbage bags up, throwing them in the back of my truck and hauling it up to the Transfer Station on a fairly regular basis.
That place is worthy of a Blog post on it’s own and is where the REAL Garbage Nazis hang out.
Recycling right at the station is a nightmare.
Just getting in and out of the place is a nightmare and there have been fifteen or twenty serious collisions from people trying to get in and out of the joint.
The whole thing is a scam and a royal pain in the ass.
Like you said, the Libs got their noses under the tent flap and it’s been down hill ever since.
I say let’s make Burn Barrels Great Again and be done with it.

The only stuff worth the expense and energy used recycling is aluminum and certain hard plastics, and those are marginal…Newsprint was just dumped in the ocean, for example…In Chicago, they just dumped all the recycling in the same landfill for decades….

mm, in a lot of the third world, paper and cardboard is profitable enough to recycle that the poorest people in society eke out a scant living collecting it wherever they find it, and selling it to recyclers. but then, that’s a freer market than in the west.
the garbage business was famous to be controlled by the mafia decades ago. now it’s just a new mafia.

When sustainability becomes unsustainable.

Vancouver is a corrupt leftist dystopia. It will end like all dystopian experiments end. Badly.

One day (and that day may never come), when the cost of producing things like aluminum from raw materials (bauxite) gets high enough, companies will arise that will pay you for all of your garbage — unsorted — so that they can extract the recyclable aluminum from it. Until that day, any recycling mandates are simply petty impositions of very diffuse slave labor … simply for the sake of doing so, and for virtue signalling.

Imagine if all of the minutes spent by all citizens in sorting and sometimes washing recyclables were concentrated into the employment of some number of paid employees. Then imagine the cost savings to corporations that use recycled materials that come from having governments impose slave labor instead.

Well if greenies were honest with themselves they would allow prisoners to do all the manual sorting as it would “benefit the community”. Instead they have prisoners working at slave labour conditions for private enterprises. What’s not to love about the American private prison system.

Maybe dumping garbage along highways is the answer. Resistance

Here, in French Canadian Utopia, we have a green (garbage) and a blue (recycling) bin. They pick the green one once a week and the blue one once every two weeks. I’ve always used both as plain ‘ol fuckin trash bins, because the content of both ends up in the same place anyway. The difference is, the blue bin costs over 4 times more to process than the green one (money = means of exchange, hence more money spent = more resources spent), only to end up in the same place as the trash. So I don’t participate in the scam and throw all my shit in both bins, and with the big family I got, it’s not too much

Last time I flew into Vancouver there were more chinamen/chinawomen in line at customs than anyone else. Hire the chinks to sort the recycles. We use mexicans in Colorado. Sarc

the energy and pollution expended in separating, separately hauling and separately processing the “repsychoables” exceeds the energy avoided by creating new items. the original priapism was ‘no landfill space’. county recycling program recently discontinued in florida 904 after decades. the leading edge of the recycling nutfest was … drum roll…seattle. i went there to study their municipal program in the early 90s.

Doesn’t it all end up in a landfill anyway??? Sure does in areas I have lived in that required recycling but we get taxed/charged for the recycling service anyway. Recycling centers accepted a certain amount daily – when the amount was reached the trucks went to the landfill. Have tried to find a number of actual recycling facilities in a State – having no luck at all with a number of actual facilities. Waste Management is the largest recycling company and can’t even get a number of actual facilities from them with an online search. Nice scam for somebody.

I like our system
Pay a refuse company 50/month
Or
Take it to the dump yourself and pay by weight
You do not pay for that which you place in the proper recycling spot, be it paper cardboard plastics bottles cans scap metal or even tree and yard waste. I recycle cardboard, tree and yard, and bag the rest and pay for that.

For a while (1990-ish), the city of Everett, Washington ‘required’ that all waste glass containers and cans be washed and also have any paper labels removed. I am not making this up.

The above ‘requirement’ quietly went away after a few months, since everyone was ignoring it anyway.
