I think you have Gresham’s law backwards.
The two sentences are completely separate thoughts. The second is Gresham’s law, and is a pretty rock solid summary (of course it works best when it is allowed to actually work – ie. no legal tender laws propping up worthless crap money). The first statement is up for debate as to the number 30, but for sure, if we had honest banking, sound money, no central bank or “lender of last resort,” the horrible savings numbers combined with the lack of infinite money to lend, would surely FORCE banks to pay much higher rates to bring in savings so that lending could occur. Now we have a money creation machine handing banks money at 0% so they have NO NEED to encourage savings with higher interest rates. The relationship between savings, lending, interest rates, and sound money, is the most important relationship in an economy, yet allowing criminals running a central bank to destroy that relationship is also the greatest way to destroy an economy…..while handing all the wealth to the banksters and other government puppetmasters.
NVMV is correct. You have Gresham’s law backwards. Bad money drives out good. Which means that solid, proper coins are hoarded while clipped coins, coins with less proper metal content, and bank notes are passed through the economy.
It is precisely such things as legal tender laws propping up crap money that bring Gresham’s law into effect.
When the mint stopped making 90 % silver coins in ’64, the pre-silver coins immediately were hoarded out of circulation. Today, a pre-’64 coin will not pass through two sets of hands before it is snatched up. On this blog, there are people who are buying gold and silver with fiat. No body spends gold and silver. They spend fiat and credit.
