On Ukraine, the World Majority Sides With Russia Over US

Guest Post by John V. Walsh

Russia pivots to the dynamic East and fast developing Global South

Russia wins China's backing in NATO showdown over Ukraine | Russia-Ukraine war News | Al Jazeera

2014 saw two pivotal events that led to the current conflict in Ukraine.

The first, familiar to all, was the coup in Ukraine in which a democratically elected government was overthrown at the direction of the United States and with the assistance of neo-Nazi elements which Ukraine has long harbored.

Shortly thereafter the first shots in the present war were fired on the Russian-sympathetic Donbass region by the newly installed Ukrainian government. The shelling of the Donbass which claimed 14,000 lives has continued for 8 years, despite attempts at a cease-fire under the Minsk accords which Russia, France and Germany agreed upon but Ukraine backed by the US refused to implement. On February 24, 2022, Russia finally responded to the slaughter in Donbass and the threat of NATO on its doorstep.

Russia Turns to the East – China Provides an Alternative Economic Powerhouse.

The second pivotal event of 2014 was less noticed and in fact rarely mentioned in the Western mainstream media. In November of that year according to the IMF, China’s GDP surpassed that of the U.S. in purchasing power parity terms (PPP GDP). (This measure of GDP is calculated and published by the IMF, World Bank and even the CIA. Students of international relations like economics Nobel Laureate, Joseph Stiglitz, Graham Allison and many others consider this metric the best measure of a nation’s comparative economic power.) One person who took note and who often mentions China’s standing in the PPP-GDP ranking is none other than Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.

From one point of view, the Russian action in Ukraine represents a decisive turn away from the hostile West to the more dynamic East and the Global South. This follows decades of importuning the West for a peaceful relationship since the Cold War’s end. As Russia makes its Pivot to the East, it is doing its best to ensure that its Western border with Ukraine is secured.

Following the Russian action in Ukraine, the inevitable US sanctions poured onto Russia. China refused to join them and refused to condemn Russia. This was no surprise; after all Putin’s Russia and Xi’s China had been drawing ever closer for years, most notably with trade denominated in ruble-renminbi exchange, thus moving toward independence from the West’s dollar dominated trade regime.

The World Majority Refuses to Back US Sanctions

But then a big surprise. India joined China in refusing to honor the US sanctions regime. And India kept to its resolve despite enormous pressure including calls from Biden to Modi and a train of high level US, UK and EU officials trekking off to India to bully, threaten and otherwise attempting to intimidate India. India would face “consequences,” the tired US threat went up. India did not budge.

India’s close military and diplomatic ties with Russia were forged during the anti-colonial struggles of the Soviet era. India’s economic interests in Russian exports could not be countermanded by US threats. Now India and Russia are now working on trade via ruble-rupee exchange. In fact, Russia has turned out to be a factor that put India and China on the same side, pursuing their own interests and independence in the face of US diktat. Moreover with trade in ruble-renminbi exchange already a reality and with ruble-rupee exchange in the offing, are we about to witness a Renminbi-Ruble-Rupee world of trade – a “3R” alternative to the Dollar-Euro monopoly? Is the world’s second most important political relationship, that between India and China, about to take a more peaceful direction? What’s the world’s first most important relationship?

India is but one example of the shift in power. Out of 195 countries, only 30 have honored the US sanctions on Russia. That means about 165 countries in the world have refused to join the sanctions. Those countries represent by far the majority of the world’s population. Most of Africa, Latin America (including Mexico and Brazil), East Asia (excepting Japan, South Korea, both occupied by US troops and hence not sovereign, Singapore and the renegade Chinese Province of Taiwan) have refused. (India and China alone represent 35% of humanity.)

Add to that fact that 40 different countries are now the targets of US sanctions and there is a powerful constituency to oppose the thuggish economic tactics of the US

Finally, at the recent G-20 Summit a walkout led by the US when the Russia delegate spoke was joined by the representatives of only 3 other G-20 countries, with 80% of these leading financial nations refusing to join! Similarly, a US attempt to bar a Russian delegate from a G-20 meeting later in the year in Bali was rebuffed by Indonesia which currently holds the G-20 Presidency.

Nations Taking Russia’s side are no longer poor as in Cold War 1.0.

These dissenting countries of the Global South are no longer as poor as they were during the Cold War. Of the top 10 countries in PPP-GDP, 5 do not support the sanctions. And these include China (number one) and India (number 3). So the first and third most powerful economies stand against the US on this matter. (Russia is number 6 on that list about equal to Germany, number 5, the two being close to equal, belying the idea that Russia’s economy is negligible.)

These stands are vastly more significant than any UN vote. Such votes can be coerced by a great power and little attention is paid to them in the world. But the economic interests of a nation and its view of the main danger in the world are important determinants of how it reacts economically – for example to sanctions. A “no” to US sanctions is putting one’s money where one’s mouth is.

We in the West hear that Russia is “isolated in the world” as a result of the crisis in Ukraine. If one is speaking about the Eurovassal states and the Anglosphere, that is true. But considering humanity as a whole and among the rising economies of the world, it is the US that stands isolated. And even in Europe, cracks are emerging. Hungary and Serbia have not joined the sanctions regime and of course most European countries will not and indeed cannot turn away from Russian energy imports crucial to their economies. It appears that the grand scheme of US global hegemony to be brought about by the US move to WWII Redux, both Cold and Hot, has hit a mighty snag.

For those who look forward to a multipolar world, this is a welcome turn of events emerging out of the cruel tragedy of the US proxy war in Ukraine. The possibility of a saner, more prosperous multipolar world lies ahead – if we can get there.

While many Americans are struggling to understand the relationships among US and Ukrainian politicians, the public is united in understanding that this is not our war. Our war is in Washington DC and on the southern border. We are not interested in Ukraine’s borders and we don’t trust our own politicians.

The dragon thrashes about causing mayhem in every direction. It’s vital regions seem invulnerable to however many arrows shot into it. It cannot be reasoned with and reacts to threats with fire. What is its reason for being? Maybe the dragon is like the bull that is sent into the ring maddened with pain for no other reason than that it serves a purpose? The crowd and the matadors are united with the bull as spectacle. The warriors and the dragon are spectacle.

Desire for power, money, fame, and sex are the drives that each of us must abate and discard if we are to maturate, to ready ourselves for the divine. Can sending arrows into the dragon or attending the bullfights change anything? The freaks who sponsor the dragon and the stadiums are immune to our threats and weapons and they know what entertains and distracts us so they are left to do as they will. What will we do about them if what we do keeps them? Our arrows and need for distractions have the opposite effect of what in necessary for our freedom.

What have the great philosophers and thinkers advised? Pretty much all of them have said and seen ignored the instruction, “Know thyself.”

They all have said the same thing, from Lao Tzu to Buddha to Socrates to Pope to Keats to Emerson to Krishnamurti. It’s in the bible as well.

He who knows others is wise;
He who knows himself is enlightened.
– Lao-Tzu

The true voyage of discovery lies not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.
-Unknown

Know thyself, and thou shalt know the universe.
-Socrates

Know then thyself, presume not God to scan, The proper study of Mankind is Man.
Alexander Pope

Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string.
-Emerson

Be a light unto thyself.
You are the world.
-Krishnamurti

To thine ownself be true.
-Shakespeare

Without going out my door
I can know all things on earth.
Without looking out of my window
I can know the ways of heaven.
For the further one travels
the less one knows.
The sage therefore arrives without traveling,
Sees all without looking,
Does all without doing.

That’s good work, bigfoot. And clearly you haven’t wasted your time in this world but have gained insight and discovered the point of this exercise.

I have to point to an inconsistency though. “Know thyself” is taught by all of the world’s sages, but it is not in the Bible. The instruction in the Bible is clear and it is different from what the sages teach. The Bible says:

Know God.

This is the only way we can come to truly know ourselves.

Here then, the quote from A Pope:

“…Know then thyself, presume not God to scan, The proper study of Mankind is Man…”

This is a direct contradiction of the Bible, which teaches that the mind of God is indeed the province of mankind to study, in fact is the duty of mankind to study. The very purpose of the Bible is making that study possible. By extension, the proper study of mankind IS man, but the only sufficient way to approach that study is to view mankind through the lens of what God has taught in Scripture.

The sages of this world therefore leave us with an insufficient perspective from which to view all things. Rather like the markings on the headpiece to the Staff of Ra in Raiders of the Lost Ark: there were markings on both sides of the headpiece which needed to be deciphered all together. The markings on one side alone left some of the raiders with inaccurate dimensions. Their staff would be too long. Those raiders would therefore be digging in the wrong place.

Without knowing God, we will never rightly know ourselves. Without knowing God we cannot know who we are and we cannot know what we are. And we cannot rightly know the enemy or even where the enemy resides.

What was the purpose of Jesus? To bring peace on earth? No, not that and he said so. He said, “I am.” Was He not both a man walking the earth and God at the same time? Was He not here to show us what to do? He even rose from the dead. How are we to use Jesus as an example if we are all the time praying to God out there somewhere rather than examining what we actually are and could be if Jesus can be believed. Faith is not necessary. Truth is necessary. Seeing is necessary. The truth about ourselves, The Kingdom of God is within you. How much clearer can the Man/God be? We cannot possibly know ourselves by focusing on God. That God is an image made in man’s mind. We pray to an image we have constructed ourselves with the help of the established religions. God is not that image. The Kingdom of God is within you, not out there in the form of an image. That image is pure distraction. Jesus made it clear that this so.

Pope:

If you’re pointing to anything Jesus said as words which have value, then you can never say that faith is not necessary.

Faith is primary in His teaching. Faith is indispensable, the literal sine qua non.

And belief in Him and in His teaching should always come before reliance on anything any sage of this world has said.

I’ll take the words of Christ over the words of Pope or Socrates any day. Every day.

From Thomas:

They said to Him: “Shall we then, being children, enter the Kingdom?” Jesus
said to them: “When you make the two one, and when you make the inner as the
outer and the outer as the inner and the above as the below, and when you
make the male and the female into a single one, then you shall enter the
kingdom.”

You and I are responsible for what we are. Jesus told us what to do. No faith necessary, no belief necessary, just the apprehension of the truth that He spoke. The trinity is in us, not out in the universe somewhere and something to pray to as if we are beggars and fear punishment should our belief not be strong enough. Yes, we are weak and we have work to do in this life and the following ones. That is our destiny and not something given to us just because we pray and believe and remain as we are, which is children. Jesus says plainly, “When you . . .” He does not say “If you . . .” There are no conditions but those He set for us as plainly as can be.

Jesus:

They said to Him: ‘shall we then, being children, enter the Kingdom?’ Jesus said to them: ‘When you make the two one, and when you make the inner as the outer, and the outer as the inner, and the above as the below, and when you make the male and the female into a single one, so that the male will not be male, and the female [not] be female, when you make eyes in the place of an eye, and a hand in the place of a hand, and a foot in the place of a foot, [and] an image in the place of an image, then shall you enter [the Kingdom].’” The Gospel of Thomas, 22

The kingdom of God is not coming with signs to be observed; nor will they say, “Lo, here it is!” or “There!” for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you. (Lk 17:20-21)

“Greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world.’ I John 4:4”

Leo Tolstoy:
“As we live through thousands of dreams in our present life, so is our present life only one of many thousands of such lives which we enter from the other more real life and then return after death. Our life is but one of the dreams of that more real life, and so it is endlessly, until the very last one, the very real the life of God.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson:
“The soul comes from without into the human body, as into a temporary abode, and it goes out of it anew it passes into other habitations, for the soul is immortal.”

Carl Jung “My life often seemed to me like a story that has no beginning and no end. I had the feeling that I was an historical fragment, an excerpt for which the preceding and succeeding text was missing. I could well imagine that I might have lived in former centuries and there encountered questions I was not yet able to answer; that I had been born again because I had not fulfilled the task given to me.”

Towards the end of his Republic Plato turned his attention towards the immorality of the soul. For Plato goodness needs to be understood without considering its consequences. Goodness is its own reward – an end in itself and not a means to an end. Nevertheless, Plato argues that the just man is rewarded not only in his lifetime (i.e. by his society) but to an even greater extent after death. Plato believed that the soul was fundamentally pure but becomes deformed through association with the body. Despite this it retains something of its true nature – and shows this through longing for wisdom.

Socrates I am confident that there truly is such a thing as living again, that the living spring from the dead, and that the souls of the dead are in existence.

When I see nothing annihilated, and not even a drop of water wasted, I cannot suspect the annihilation of souls Thus finding myself to exist in the world, I believe I shall, in some shape or other, always exist; with all the inconveniences human life is liable to, I shall not object to a new edition of mine; hoping, however, that the errata of the last may be corrected.

Contrarily Jesus was something greater than Solomon. He knew what we need to know in order to gain everlasting life. He was wiser than the ancient pagan philosopher, Thales of Miletus, who said: “Know thyself.” Wiser than the English poet, Alexander Pope, who is considered famous for saying: “The proper study of mankind is man.” “Pope urges us to learn from what is around us, what we can observe ourselves in nature, and to not pry into God’s business or question his ways; For everything that happens, both good and bad, happens for a reason.” It is not for us to question the mysterious ways of God, what is, just is:

An Essay on Man

Jesus pointed to a greater knowledge as absolutely vital to life. Certainly if a man seeks to know himself, the only honest conclusion he can come to is that he is imperfect like all other men and is a sinner and that the means of salvation is not in himself or other men. Even what relics of conscience he has inherited from Adam, the once perfect man, will remind him he is a sinner and will condemn him.

AP, what is said here in different ways is contrary to your statement that “the means of salvation is not in himself or other men.”

Luke 17:20–21 — English Standard Version (ESV)
20 Being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, he answered them, “The kingdom of God is not coming in ways that can be observed, 21 nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘There!’ for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you.”

Luke 17:20–21 — King James Version (KJV 1900)
20 And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: 21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

Luke 17:20–21 — New Living Translation (NLT)
20 One day the Pharisees asked Jesus, “When will the Kingdom of God come?”

Jesus replied, “The Kingdom of God can’t be detected by visible signs. 21 You won’t be able to say, ‘Here it is!’ or ‘It’s over there!’ For the Kingdom of God is already among you.”

This is my best guess about God’s Kingdom. Daniel says about King Nebuchadnezzar’s statue: “And as for the stone that struck the image, it became a large mountain and filled the whole earth.”—Daniel 2:34, 35.

The symbolic meaning is that world governments are in for destruction. But at whose hands? Who is responsible for the great stone that destroys the statue? What is the large mountain that fills the whole earth after the world’s governments are destroyed?

The Bible explains the king’s prophetic dream: “And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be brought to ruin. And the kingdom itself will not be passed on to any other people. It will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, and it itself will stand to times indefinite; forasmuch as you beheld that out of the mountain a stone was cut not by hands, and that it crushed the iron, the copper, the moulded clay, the silver and the gold. God himself has made known to the king what is to occur after this. The dream is reliable, and the interpretation of it is trustworthy.” Daniel 2:44, 45.

The question is not whether God intends to set up a worldwide kingdom, but when will he do so. Jesus referred his followers to the book of Daniel when discussing future events —Matthew 24:15. I think this is what Luke is saying but I confess to being somewhat vague on the point.

The Kingdom is not a place as I interpret things. It is not God’s Kingdom, it is that our Kingdom is within us. We would be as God if we do as instructed. It’s just as Jesus accomplished in his lifetime. That is the model. He showed us the way, and not only that, He instructed us as to the way, as per Thomas. It’s right there in plain sight, but we humans have been led astray by religious factions that began when fear of God was introduced by the “everlasting pain” premise that kept people in line.

Jesus says, “When you . . .” How can we misinterpret that? And He doesn’t say “If you . . .” This would mean that we will be after this until we do it. Better to start now finding our what to do and what not to do. We will repeat until we do know.

Ah, I see you are using the Gnostic gospels. I am unsure about these writings being attributed to the true followers of Jesus. Andrew M. Greeley, a Roman Catholic priest and professor of sociology at the University of Arizona, compared the Gnostic gospels with those of the Bible, he concluded: “The Jesus of the Gnostics is sometimes incoherent, sometimes unintelligible, and sometimes more than a little creepy.”

I haven’t studied these writings but understand their significance. “These are the secret words which the Living Jesus spoke and Didymos Judas Thomas wrote.” So begins The Gospel According to Thomas, one of 48 different Gnostic religious documents found on that Egyptian hillside. Commenting on this, Helmut Koester of Harvard Divinity School said that the gospel of Thomas would provide important new material for discerning the teachings of Jesus. But does it? Is some secret wisdom that is important to your faith missing from the Bible?

I don’t have the answer and it will take a lot of scholarship to sort it out, if ever. For me it remains controversial. Thank you, bigfoot for going to these lengths bringing alternative information to light. I always prefer the Alt. views against orthodoxy which has often proven false through vested interests.

AP, may I point out that what happened in Constantinople and subsequently to get to the current version of the Bible should cast doubt on anything and everything promulgated by interpreters of the Word. We simply cannot trust what is written. We are left to our ability to see what is, with, perhaps, some nudging from those we intuitively trust, always understanding that doubt stands there and shouts until it at least quiets down and as Krishnamurti said, “keep it on a leash.”

How about Luke and John:

The kingdom of God is not coming with signs to be observed; nor will they say, “Lo, here it is!” or “There!” for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you. (Lk 17:20-21)

“Greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world.’ I John 4:4”

Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world” (John 18:36).

What can be clearer than that the Kingdom is not physical, nor of this world, but is internal and available to the least of us. And is not only ahead but “is at hand.”

Jesus: Among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he” (Matt. 11:11–12). Here Jesus is contrasting the natural birth into the world with the spiritual birth into the kingdom of heaven.

AP, I don’t mean to make myself seem imperial, but I do appreciate that you are willing to go below the surface as opposed to accepting without reservation what has been instilled in Christians by ministers and every other authority. This, while Christians have killed more people on earth than any other group while arguing during the nine thousand and counting wars in recorded history. The Inquisition lasted 300 years. All the while most of us have refused to recognize the gift within of intuition. Why would even a Christian God give it, but never ask that it be used? Instead, faith it is and nothing else. This is wrong and I know it intuitively.

Should you read Harold Percival, start with “Man and Woman and Child.”

Cyber attack sets all wire transfer connected bank accounts to one million dollars, instant hyperinflation. 10% of cell phones hacked and burst into flames while charging at 4AM EST. Uncontained California reactor meltdowns. Tehran and Tel Aviv go kinetic. Elon Musk assassinated at Twitter by suicide bomber dressed as Easter Bunny. Kamala selects Hunter as V.P. after Joe Biden blessing and exit. HRC new head of DHS Disinformation Force, promises no singing. Internet NSA gated for our protection. Immigrants, refugees, and Antifa burning gas stations to save the environment.
