At today’s prices, yes … but in, say, the ’60s or so — it was all free — scrounged from construction sites …
Today’s construction sites, though, rarely have any ‘real’ lumber — it’s all just some variation of OSB …
Correct, “real” lumber (plywood) isn’t to be found much if anywhere on construction sites or dumpsters. But in recent pre-covid times, real lumber was still available if you searched on freecycle sites. Post-covid, I can’t find squat for free anywhere anymore. I wonder what the lumber value is now for the freecycle deck I built (can be seen on homepage by clicking on my handle)
We made tar-paper shacks and tree houses. There was a small factory in my village in Western MA that made the stuff, and they were happy to give you scraps and whatnot for free- just ask.

63 years later I am conflicted.
I was a USAF Officer and who was gone for long months at a time Serving my Country and there were those like the mailman, milkman, meterman, repairmen, etc at my house frequently doing their duty by day (and night probably). She was letting no crisis go to waste, servicing our lonely countrymen in her own special way per se. It had a sad ending though.
The fucking Marine Corps ruined me for a long time. Every fucking woman on base was a waiting for her husband to deploy so she could turn tricks.
Seriously, my parent’s mistakes probably wouldn’t have been so bad without exposing myself to Yanks and Coasters.
