I just read that Russia has to purchase UAVs from Iran. Why, they don’t have the technology?

Perhaps they’ve lost so many and don’t have the time and/or chips to replace them. Iran has them ready to go.

This analysis seems like the way Putin might think….

The Iranian drone deal with Russia appears to be a show of strategic symbolism, rather than a significant arms transaction that could possibly shift the balance of power in favor of either party. It sends a message to the region’s countries that Iran is not alone, as well as giving notice to Washington that Russia may expand the two global powers’ disputes and rivalry to other arenas.

What lies behind Iran’s drones deal with Russia?

Orlan-10
Operator: Russia | Made in: Russia | Wingspan: 10 feet | Flight time: 18 hours | Top speed: 93 mph | Powerplant: Internal combustion

The workhorse of Russia’s drone fleet, the Orlan-10 (“Eagle-10”) has been flying since 2010. Its modular payload bay can accommodate a variety of sensors and cameras: One version captured in Ukraine housed an off-the-shelf Canon EOS DSLR. An alternative model known as Leer-3 carries an electronic warfare package that can jam radio communications, including cellphones, within a 3.7-mile radius. Unlike many drones, which are flown by remote crews, Orlan-10s can be operated directly by Russian artillery units, tightening the chain of communication between the drone pilot and those firing the guns. Ukrainian troops can recognize the Orlan by the high-pitched sound of its engine, which they say sounds like a motor scooter—a dreaded harbinger of a forthcoming rocket attack.

https://www.popularmechanics.com/military/a40298287/drone-fighting-ukraine-war-russia/

While Russians boast an array of air-launched precision munitions, Kalibr cruise missiles are their weapon of choice. The most deployed Kalibr, the 3M-54, sports a 7-meter tubular frame and a turbojet engine. 3M-54s cruise at Mach 0.8 but accelerate to Mach 3 before impact. 3M-54s can be also launched from ships or submarines; and can hit buildings 1,500 kilometers away with 450-kilogram warheads. Kalibrs have blasted hundreds of Ukrainian munitions warehouses, army barracks etc.

Howitzers not missiles, however, are this war’s grim reaper. While artillery has been ‘king of battle’ since Napoleon, the Russo-Ukrainian War debuts an historic wedding of howitzers to drones.

Russia’s Krasnopal artillery shells (typically fired from armored self-propelled MSTA 152-mm howitzers) are laser-guided to their targets by loitering drones. Rocket-assisted Krasnopals can hit stationary battle tanks 40 kilometers from launch. Their 7-kilogram warheads rocket straight down onto their prey, guaranteeing armor penetration.

While Krasnopals have destroyed hundreds of military vehicles, they too are not this war’s principal widow-maker. That honor belongs to old-school 152-mm shells coupled with humble Orlan-10 drones.

Perhaps the most basic of the 30 Russian-made drones, the Orlan-10 uses a gasoline-fueled piston engine to power a single-propeller plane with a 2-meter wingspan. Orlan-10s rely on rubber-band powered catapults for launch and parachutes to land. Orlan-10s carry retail, made-in-the-USA GPS systems and off-the-shelf Canon cameras. Nevertheless, Orlan-10s remain airborne for 16 hours at 5-kilometer altitudes whilst signaling real-time data to communication hubs 600 kilometers away.

Typical front-line “battles” consist of Orlan-10s beaming video of Ukrainian troops back to Russian communication hubs which then radio coordinates to batteries of four MSTA howitzers. The MSTAs then rumble into firing positions up to 25 kilometers from the spotted Ukrainians. Within one minute the MSTAs simultaneously fire 6 rounds each before driving off to elude counter-artillery. Each round carries a 45-kilogram shrapnel, or incendiary, bomb. The Russian Information Agency recently recounted a day wherein 157 such “battles” took place. The Russians experienced zero casualties.

Circa Day 150, Russia claims to have destroyed: 4,141 battle tanks and other armored fighting vehicles; 4,453 unarmored military vehicles; 3,176 artillery pieces and mortars; 762 multiple launch rocket systems; 1,589 drones; 144 helicopters; and 357 anti-aircraft systems.

I’m not debating their homegrown stuff. Just quoting info directly from Russia. Maybe they know something bigger is in the woix and want an edge in numbers available at the start. An army fights a war with what’s at hand, not what they dream of owning.

Brilliant Flash, thanks greatly for this. It has taken me back to my childhood when we were avid modellers and mad on aeroplanes. I wish we had the tech then – we tried to replicate war games with bombs etc but really didn’t work that well. The combat sessions were good though.

If I were even 50 I would homestead in Siberia. Putin was giving away tracts well below the Arctic Circle for homesteading to encourage settlement. Having used 5 and 10 foot firewood saws and hay scythes etc. it would not have been a hardship. Siberia is not what we were taught in school.
What we were taught in school is like nothing else though. That’s a fact Jack.

Brian and Flea- There are strings and there are perks. The strings are you must trap (x) number of fur pelts during the year which is brutal but doable. They supply snow mobiles and much more and you have use of a great deal of land. There is a lot more to the whathaveyous and therefores but don’t get the impression it is a gift.

EDIT: Big downside is the native Siberians are nasty drunks and live pretty raw, you have to deal with that problem, like kneegrows being in your hood.

I know they are still looking for white people to relocate there, they have a population deficit and not nearly enough folks for such a huge landmass. Some of the`land in that area that is arable is nice but the population is more Asian than white Would be a great place to be if you were young enough to farm.

We met a Russian beekeeper who moved to the USA to homestead, because regulations made it too difficult in Russia at the time. But he describes a wonderful culture and way of life, if you leave out the bureaucrats. I think some of those things have been reformed since, but I don’t know.

As someone of Hungarian heritage (and thus a pretty easy path to passport/citizenship), I can tell you that their totalitarian response to the scamdemic was enough to turn me off that country forever. Sorry, the frying pan is bad enough, why jump into the fire. The response to the next BS plague will likely be even worse. There is certainly a lot to praise them for, but in the end, your day to day is what matters, and to Orban, being a horrible dictator in response to the bad flu was all that seemed to matter.
