SUNDAY MORNING CLASSICS ON TBP

The Classic Music Mafia”
nkit, and Steve C.

Every Sunday morning we present selections for our TBP family to enjoy.

We present symphonies, ensembles, quartets, octets, etc.

Not all of our music is strictly ‘classical’. We may stray a little, but we strive to make all of our selections ‘classy’.

We offer tips on proper ‘symphony etiquette’ and even some selections that are a bit light-hearted and fun aimed at a younger audience. Those pieces will be so designated, and might be a good way to introduce kids to a world of music that they might not have been exposed to or think of as old and ‘stuffy’.

A full symphony will run as long as it will. We don’t want to cut a symphony short. However, we also include some shorter pieces that we try to keep under fifteen minutes in length. You can sample each and hopefully find one or more that pleases you.

We hope that you enjoy our Sunday selections.

Tomorrow is my 70th birthday and I would like to celebrate it with some selections from the Gimnazija Kranj Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. They are Slovenian. (Slovenia is a small country at the northern end of the old Yugoslavia and is by all accounts a very nice place)

I also listed them in our offering of shorts on June 26th playing Grieg: Peer Gynt and Fauré: Pavane, the second of which I think was absolutely lovely. I didn’t know what the hell they were singing about, but it was wonderful.

A search found: The words were inconsequential verses, à la Verlaine, on the romantic helplessness of man, written by the Countess’s cousin, Robert de Montesquiou.

You can access it here.

Regardless of the inadvertent crashing of the cymbals at 2:12 these kids didn’t miss a beat. The whole thing is only 5½ minutes long.

I find that I really like this simple song. The optional chorus does a great job.

They are absolutely delightful. You will love them…

Steve C.

Beethoven: Symphony No.9

This recording of Beethovens 9th Symphony, 4th movement is particularly legendary.

Márquez: Danzón No. 2

New composer to me, and a great piece worth sharing.

Notes under the video of interest.

Verdi Opera Aida – Gloria all’ Egitto, Triumphal March

This Classic popped up just now. I had the blind luck to see it in London many decades ago when young and inexperienced so all need to see this FABULOS production!!

This One Comes To Us Thanks To Ghost.

Алые паруАлые парса 2022 года. Самые красивые моменты. Санкт-Петербург. Scarlet sails.

I think Steve et al should change the title of the weekly offering to something more enticing to those of the gloom and doom ilk.

Perhaps “Performing the Classics while TBP Fans Flames” or something similarly snazzy with a slight hint of panic.
Which most of us should be feeling about now.

What can anyone tell me about the Russian celebration of the Red Sails?

I told Admin in an email I’d send TBP fifty bucks for a post about this really interesting tradition Russia started in 1968. From the various videos I’ve watched, Russia is closer to America in the 1950s, with national pride and promotion of family a high priority.

Glenn Gould – Beethoven, Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major op.73 “Emperor” – Part 2

Well, I promised to play more of Glenn Gould playing Beethoven, Mozart and others, so that’s where we are headed today.

We’ll start with Gould playing “Beethoven Concerto No.5 in E-Flat Major, op.73”

To celebrate the 200th birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven, Glenn Gould performed “The Bicentennial Concert“, produced by Mario Prizek and originally broadcast on 9th December, 1970.

Part 2

00:00 Adagio un poco moto – attacca
07:35 Rondo. Allegro

Mozart Piano Sonata No.13 in B-Flat Major K 333

We’ll follow that great piece with Gould playing “Mozart Piano Sonata No.13 in B-Flat Major K 333”

Shostakovich, Quintet for Piano and Strings in G minor op. 57

We’ll conclude with Gould playing a piece written by the great Russian composer and pianist, Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975).

Sunday Concert: Music In The USSR, January 14th, 1962. Dmitri Shostakovich, Quintet for Piano and Strings in G minor op. 57. Gould appears as performer and commentator, tracing the development of style in Russian music.

I hope you have enjoyed these works, and have a relaxing Sunday.

The Orchestra sold out the Gallus Hall in Cankarjev dom Slovenia in short seconds. This perfomance is a milestone. Primož Zevnik, the director, recorded it with 17 cameras. Gimnazija Kranj kids play amazingly. Just enjoy this powerful musical spectacle.

A Hungarian Girl is a song from German musical Victoria and her Husar, written by composer Paul Abraham. Paul Abraham (Hungarian: Ábrahám Pál; 2 November 1892 – 6 May 1960) was a Jewish-Hungarian composer of operettas, who scored major successes in the German-speaking world. His specialty – and own innovation – was the insertion of jazz interludes into operettas. Abraham was born in Apatin, Austria-Hungary (today Serbia), and studied at the Royal National Hungarian Academy of Music in Budapest from 1910 to 1916. He studied cello with Adolf Schiffer and composition with Viktor Herzfeld.

Bizet – Carmen suite

Looks vaguely Like Eric Snowden. in disguise, leading.

Made me think of the original “Bad News Bears” for some reason.

And porcelian skinned beauties.

Happy Birthday Steve!
Thanks for an as always awesome selection.
I have not heard this particular rendition of the 9th. I shall shortly make myself some more coffee and let it fill the house. My favorite since I was teen has always been the “Ode to Freedom” from Christmas 1989. I remember watching it live broadcast with my parents.

It is important for all to understand that your marvelous Sunday selections are NOT just about the music, BUT what the music does for us all on a Sunday, to be used for the reverence of whatever one wishes to bestow reverence upon.

Repeating again this old truism.
“A man should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his life, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in the human soul.”
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
