Thank you for the “Great things” quote. I realized I didn’t have Kerouac in my collection, and found the following on Wikiquote (not always the most reliable source, but the poster appears to have gotten it right in this case as the Linked article checks out):

Great things are not accomplished by those who yield to trends and fads and popular opinion.
This is not a quote by Kerouac. It’s a quote by CBS broadcaster Charles Kuralt who used to present a TV news segment called ‘On the Road’ (which is probably how the confusion arose). This particular statement by Kuralt was made in May 1996 to students of Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, New York: https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1298&dat=19960527&id=yf8yAAAAIBAJ&sjid=yQcGAAAAIBAJ&pg=3106,5606314

George Carlin was worth over ten million dollars. He was the one percent, telling other people they have to be asleep to believe in the American dream. People don’t get it, but that was part of the joke. Carlin’s bit was about the courts, and politicians, being own by the wealthy elites, but if he had issues with the courts, or someone in politics, his own wealth and celebrity status would open doors for him that many of us would never have access to.
Rules for thee, but not for me, you see?

Well, 10mil’s not what it was. If the pie is bye-bye-american’d into “the 1%” how close would you put old George to the .1%?

It caught my attention, awhile back, when the guy who took over the billionaire maniac role in Billions was scripted to dismiss Carlin as a mere entertainer, as opposed to social critic (forget who the contrast held up to be was, but prolly wasn’t …)
