What is truly amazing is that the cops didn’t recognize the distinct sound of gun fire.
Crazy things is, that happened here about 10 years ago. Guy was cuffed and stuffed, got his hands free, grabbed a handgun left in the cruiser and shot himself.
One of those stories you ask “what ever happened to that case?” Like most settlements involving (small town) taxpayer money, it just went away.
So we are told by the officers…….
There were at least two similar “suicides” I am aware of that had serious questions about if it was even possible to have happened as “police reported”.
Then there is Ian Bush (on Oct 29/2005). Can’t say what actually happened not being there to witness, but it stinks to high heaven.

I’ve seen people take multiple rounds to the chest with hollow point and not go down. The human body is fairly durable, which is why the argument from the left of you shot him too many times is idiotic. You keep pumping rounds into the threat until it stops.

I’ll ignore the racist video “white woman” headline in order to address the total and utter incompetence and negligence of these officers in leaving the suspect alone and unsupervised in the back of the squad car, not properly securing the handcuffs on her, and leaving the rifle unsecured and in a spot where someone in the back seat of the squad car could access it. WTF? This is unbelievable and heads should roll at this police department, starting with these officers.
The first thing that I looked for was CALEA accreditation, which agencies usually brag about very publicly, because it cost them a lot in time and money to complete and requires a large admin effort to rewrite policies to a standard that meets CALEA requirements.
OKC appears to claim CALEA accreditation, but Grady Co does not appear to mention it, which may be a central factor in why this County has in-vehicle rifles, that would have likely been eliminated in any CALEA compliant agency.
Back when my former agency required us to qualify and carry rifles – which was bizarrely self-defeated by chambering the AR in 9mm – it was mounted in the trunk, and you had to check it in and out for each shift. They told us that CALEA would not allow transferring the rifle to the relief officer, nor would it allow you to simply bring your own 9mm AR (I already personally owned the exact same carbine and used the exact same Bushmaster Colt stick mags) and swap it into the squad each shift.
People hate a lot of the CALEA standardization, but in reality, if you allow an agency that has had personal shotguns or private 30-06 hunting rifles in a wooden rack inside the patrol unit going back to 1955, to move to modern defensive carbines, they are likely to do as they are already accustomed lacking some standards and practices review, which I have to admit, CALEA is pretty thorough and effective at.
I am grudgingly impressed that she figured out how to disengage the safety, and cycle the charging handle. Lucky for the S/O she did not comprehend that crappy Bushnell red dot or the iron sights.
CALEA or not, it seems like common sense to me to not have the rifle in an area that’s accessible to the person in the back seat (almost always the suspect). Guess common sense is a casualty of over-regulation.
Find me an agency still using Crown Vic’s or Caprice Classics (with a trunk).
The standard Ford LE package is now an SUV, meaning that you have no fully isolated storage compartment in these vehicles. Couple that with agencies that have no accreditation, and you will find a lot of ill-advised practices, quite commonly.
I once had a pair of rural S/O roll into my salle-port to interview a detained suspect we had in custody, and I had to walk them over to the lock boxes to secure personal arms. One guy had a cowboy six-gun on a slouch belt like an OK Corral rig, and his partner had a 1911 ‘cocked and locked’, that he bragged was chambered in (fairly uncommon) .357 sig.
I can’t even allow a cocked and locked weapon inside the facility, so he had to fully unload it, at which point I noted his holster was a ‘3 gun’ competition setup, with no retention, and his partner with the six-gun had no speed loaders on his belt or any keepers to secure it.
I could strip that cowboy belt from the one guy in two seconds, and take the 1911 from his partner even faster, because none of this equipment is suitable for its intended purpose.
When I asked them what they would do if the 1911 guy needs more ammo in a fight, and his partner with the six gun has emptied his revolver (in an incompatible caliber), they said that this has never happened before. Meaning… it never happened to them yet, but its happened to many other people who do unwise things..
