Fifty years ago Consumer Reports rated Monkie Ward’s exterior paint a “best buy”. It went on well and lasted longer than any other paint I ever used. Turns out they actually owned a paint plant in Texas that made all the paint they sold across the country.

G. E. M. Membership Department Stores

https://torontoist.com/2010/08/vintage_toronto_ads_a_gem_of_a_store/

Probably the first “box store” in history. I didn’t know they were Canadian based. The one I went to was in Fairfax, Virginia.

Two dollars for a membership. Compare that to fifty bucks today.

You beat me to this one!.

I worked at the Tysons Corner (Vienna, Virginia) G.E.M. Lots of fun memories of that place.

Someone else beat me to Zayre’s. My sister reminded me of that one.

So much good was lost. So much evil flourished in its place.

God. We’re old.

I think there might still be one left standing on Caroline St. in old towne Fredericksburg, VA…a block or two from the tobacconist shop. They might have left it as part of the historic district.

G.E.M. – Government Employees Market. It was like a KMart for government employees (state, local, federal), but after a few years, anyone could become a member, like today’s Costco or Sam’s Club.

My second job at age 17 as a retail clerk, then became assistant manager for the Drug/Pharmacy department, but my manager also ran the Toy section, so I put together lots of bicycles. This was in 1971-1972.

In Northern Virginia…Shakey’s Pizza, Godfather’s Pizza, and Gino’s Hamburgers (started by two Baltimore Colt’s football stars – Gino Marchetti and Alan Ameche). Damn good burgers.

The restaurant was known for hamburgers such as the Sirloiner, which was made from sirloin steak (and was originally a staple of Tops Drive Inn), the Jumbo Gino, which was very similar to the Whopper and the Gino Giant, which predated and later competed with the Big Mac. The company held the franchise for Kentucky Fried Chicken in the Mid-Atlantic states. The company’s jingle, played during radio advertisements in the early years was “Everybody goes to Gino’s, ’cause Gino’s is the place to go!”

The chain had 359 company-owned locations when the Marriott Corporation acquired it in 1982.[3] Marriott discontinued the brand and converted locations to its Roy Rogers Restaurants chain.[4] The last Gino’s, located in Pasadena, Maryland and owned independently from Marriott, closed in 1986.

Gino’s also purchased and operated the Rustler Steak House chain started by Joe Campanella, which was sold by Marriott shortly after its purchase of Gino’s.
