the only saving grace against this ugly fate is that, without machine technologies affording a comfortable life, the very same condititons that made us what we are in the first place, come right back into effect: namely, that the r-selected society is ill-adapted to the harsh climatic conditions found , roughly, above 30 north or so. Yes i’m even including the northern half of the mediterranean world in that. These are regions where the seasons matter, where human survival depends critically on long-term planning, hard work, and rational decisions made often postponing or forgoing immediate gratification. The r-selected societies will continue to flourish in the jungles and tropics where all year round something to eat is literally growing on trees all about. Anywhere one needs to think a year ahead and make the hard decision after a freak loss, to go hungry now so as to be able to plant the next crop… sooner or later that kind of world will breed a k-selected society.
We evaded the very condititons that made us successful, when we tapped into the enormous abundance of fossil fuels. That was actually the thing that corrupted and rotted our civilization. Even while the going was good, it turned our incentives and priorities upside down. It turned us into worshippers of machines and haters of humanity.
