All four of my grandparents spoke in broken English having immigrated from Italy just after WWl. Italian was just as ubiquitous in my house as English but regretfully, they didn’t want us to learn Italian. We were all Americans now and they were maniacally driven to prove themselves worthy of that honor. Three of my uncles were first in line to join the military on December 8th, 1941. My Dad enlisted when he turned 18 in 1943 and fought in the Pacific. They all served with honor and returned to their families to live normal and honorable lives.
I like to flatter myself with the notion that one of the many gifts the Italians brought to America was the love of God, family, and country. We’ve gone so far into darkness that those patriots and warriors in my past would not recognize the country they bled to save. But hope and redemption are not lost. A spark remains.
