While the sentiment about fighting the communists is probably true, and possibly even his leaning toward supporting Germany over the Soviet Union, there’s no actual record of him saying these exact words. Including the last statement about the decline and fall of western civ.
That exact quote might not be in this book but it is absolutely something he came to believe during the time he was in control of post war Germany. The letters he sent to his wife make up the meat of this book and they are amazing.
