SUNDAY MORNING CLASSICS ON TBP

A collaboration of: “The Classic Music Mafia”
nkit, and Steve C.

Every Sunday morning we present selections for our TBP family to enjoy.

We present symphonies, ensembles, quartets, octets, etc.

Not all of our music is strictly ‘classical’. We may stray a little, but we strive to make all of our selections ‘classy’.

We offer tips on proper ‘symphony etiquette’ and even some selections that are a bit light-hearted and fun aimed at a younger audience. Those pieces will be so designated, and might be a good way to introduce kids to a world of music that they might not have been exposed to or think of as old and ‘stuffy’.

A full symphony will run as long as it will. We don’t want to cut a symphony short. However, we also include some shorter pieces that we try to keep under fifteen minutes in length. You can sample each and hopefully find one or more that pleases you.

We hope that you enjoy our Sunday selections.

Yuja Wang – Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No 2 in C minor Op.18

Outdoors in a town square in Munich at sunset. The camera work is great!

The image below is of the Feldherrnhalle. It was commissioned in 1841 by King Ludwig I of Bavaria to honor the tradition of his army.

It’s modeled after the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence. You will see 2 Bavarian lions in the structure, one of which stands with its mouth open and the other with its mouth closed.

This symbolizes the importance of speaking against the rulers but not the church.

Father And Daughter Last Performance Before Her Wedding – Bach: Oboe and Violin Concerto in C Minor

This Concerto by Johann Sebastian Bach is a special one. PPZ production captured one of the best young violinists of our time Rannveig Marta Šarc accompanied by her father, a renowned oboist, and director of Slovenian Philharmonics. It was a special moment where father and daughter came together in a beautiful baroque set and played this iconic Concerto for Oboe and Violin in C Minor BWV 1060R by Johann Sebastian Bach.

Thanks so very much for your gentlemen’s efforts here to provide this venue of music worship!!

This performer’s enthusiasm is reflected in his facial movements, and for sure his playing.

The ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ with von Karajan conducting the BPO is majestic … one of my favorite pieces by one of my favorite conductors and orchestras. The BPO under von Karajan was in its prime for a long while — similar to the NBC Symphony Orchestra under the legendary Arturo Toscanini or the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Georg Solti or Fritz Reiner.

The ‘Scheherazade’ is also special — a beautiful piece, beautifully conducted and performed — as are the 3 Rimsky-Korsakov interpretations.

Someone said here a couple of weeks back that it’s worth hearing the same composition by different conductors/orchestras — and, from my experience of listening to classical music for more than 50 years, I agree wholeheartedly.

The classical repertoire is truly music for the soul — in its best examples, that’s where it originated … and, under the best of conductors and orchestras, it offers us a sublime experience.

We are truly blessed to have our cultural artifacts — books, art, architecture, music — so readily available to us today …

Thanks to all who participate here these Sunday mornings … your contributions are very deeply appreciated …

Another favorite composer of mine is the Italian, Ottorino Respighi (July 9, 1879, Bologna – April 18, 1936, Rome) …

Here is one offering of his music — The Roman Trilogy (its popular name) composed of the Pines of Rome, the Fountains of Rome and the Festivals of Rome.

It’s not a commonly played part of the repertoire — hence, no ‘live’ performances of all 3 pieces that I’ve found — but this version by Eugene Ormandy conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra is really quite excellent.

Ciao.

By the way, the text on the YT page offers an explanation of things that Respighi was trying to convey … a worthwhile read if you’re not familiar with his music, or with tone poems generally …

My pleasure, nkit …

Grew up listening to Caruso and others on my maternal grandfather’s crank-operated Victrola playing 78 rpm shellac records … and he’d sing along with the great tenor …

It was a world of magic as he expanded his own love of music and took me along for the magical ride …

I’ve been surprised to be ‘featured’ both New Year’s Day and today … thanks for that honor to Steve and the rest of you …

Let me know how I may contribute or be of other service …

Ciao.

Mongolia . . . a nation having a population of 3.4 million, unexpectedly seems to be blessed with much talent of the musical variety. The Mongolian State Conservatory has trained many fine musicians to be sure. Too bad I didn’t find this one for Christmas, Alimaa Samdan who calls herself Pianist Ami.
