Pertaining to Atlas holding up the globe, there was a C-Store on US 19 in Burnsville, NC that had him doing just that.
It sold unbranded Hercules Gasoline. Sadly, when NC widened 19 to 4 lanes, the store was razed.
Almost as sad as outside of Southport, NC , where a store advertised “Coffee & Worms” on its gas pump canopy. A new Lowe’s Foods razed it too. BTW, yes, Jim Lowe founcded BOTH Lowe’s Hardware & Lowe’s Foods in N. Wilkesboro, NC.
Junior Johnson running ‘shine for the Wilkes County locals sure paid big time. Enjoyed being the GM of the Esso Distributor there from 1983-88.
