They will eat just about everything…give them back their own egg shells, and sprinkle in some crushed oysters shells now and then from the feed store to keep their egg shells strong.
Fermenting your chicken feed is a simple smart no cost feed enhancement step and will significantly increase its nutritional value.
I just expanded my fenced in area to a pasture to open more free range area and cut down on feed costs.
Check out local restaurants and see if one will give you their food scraps…maybe with an occasional dozen egg exchange (depending on how many layers you have). I’m approaching a local privately owned sub shop/pizza/gyro place soon as I have a budding friendship with the owner.
Cut a deal with some of your renters for their food scrapes? Get Latisha and Rwanda to give it up!
A word of caution. When giving back the eggshells make sure you break them up. Partial egg shells will soon lead to chickens pecking at the eggs they lay. Thats just been our experience. We have lots of sand here so I just gave the birds grit that they ingest for the gizzard and helps keep shells solid, our birds shells were like breaking rocks.
And yes, they will eat everything. If you need extra food, grocery stores produce dept, bakeries for breads (No pastries shit tho) and local restaurants. With these you have to pick up regular otherwise they’ll cut you off because of the mess it can generate quickly when you do not show.
Barred Rock chickens are the worst for breaking eggs. I have had a few where they are so bad that I to separate them. If you live near a grain elevator you might be able to get the cleanings for free. The trucks come in and open the gates to clean out the trailer before they load and the operator will make a pile that he will have to haul away.

I’m timely on my egg collections too…always popping in and collecting throughout the morning/day…cuz idle beaks are the Devil’s pecking workshop.

You mentioned chicken feed fermenting. I only bought chicken feed once or twice. There was so much waste I couldn’t keep justifying buying it. We had 100 layers and 100 meat birds, the limit imposed by our british communista govt.
Like all new farmers I bought the feed, saw the waste, then switched to COB, found that the oats went straight thru everything. So i had the feed supplier swap out the oats for cracked wheat. I was buying a ton of mix and a ton of layer at a time. Bulk, so I built elevated bins.
The mix I fed everything to, in the nongrowing parts of the year. During summers I had arranged to take culls from some of the farmers locally. So my chickens and hogs would get watermelons, tomatos, apples, cherries, greens, you name it. I’d drop my trailer off in the morning and they’d fill it. In the evening after work I’d go pick it up and shove a ton of produce over the fence every day. Lots of work, but very tasty in the end. Point is I never fed an commercial feed to any of our animals, and ONLY lost chickens to owls, never diseases. But I relay this info to those that are just starting out to consider. You don’t have to go the commercial feed route.
