Can we please stop pretending that Trump stopped illegal immigration? It happens every day without regard to who is in Office. It happened every day of his term…and where is our wall? Were we not PROMISED a fucking WALL?!?
You have to remember that in govspeak reducing the rate of growth is actually a decline. Just like with the budgets/spending.
The most valuable aspects of Trumps immigration stance, besides all the red wall herring, was firstly that it brought the issue back into the overton allowing a good chunk of Americans to express their will (and forcing the enemy and their media lackeys to go full clown to obscure and marginalize that fact).
Secondly, it demonstrated the reality of self-deportation and the power of incentives vs disincentives. All the fear-mongering and orange man literally hitler during his run and early term reduced the invasion by means of fomenting actual fear in some subset of invaders that they would have a more difficult time with their American Dreaming and by the explicit anti-immigration stance of at least half the population.
But yes, there is very little will to turn away dreamers and a whole new stack of incentives to invite and reward invaders. None of this will change as long as we are occupied. And Trump 2.0 will not be able to repeat the effect, even if he wanted to – which is another question.
Your point is completely valid, which is why I feel bad pointing out that my gut is telling me this goes far beyond that.
