SUNDAY MORNING CLASSICS ON TBP

A collaboration of: “The Classic Music Mafia”
Anthony Aaron, nkit, and Steve C.

nkit has informed me that he is leaving us. His last posting will be on April 16th which I already have from him.

I want to take this time to personally thank him for all of his hard work in making this submission to TBP what it has become over the last three years.

nkit is one of the four ‘originals’ of our ‘Music Mafia’.

SMC left early, then came back briefly, then left again.
Austrian Peter was with us until a year ago last October.

It has been just nkit and me for the last year and a half until Anthony Aaron graciously joined us a few weeks ago.

nkit believes Anthony to be a good replacement for him.

We will miss nkit’s contributions greatly, but we will continue.

Sooooooo. If there is anyone else out there that wants to join us please send me an email to that effect at [email protected]

I will need to have your offerings at least by the Wednesday before they are due as it takes me a while to compose all of this. A few weeks in advance would also be nice although not necessary.

I will re-post this for the next few weeks.

So now, on with this weeks offering…

Every Sunday morning we present selections for our TBP family to enjoy.

We present symphonies, ensembles, quartets, octets, etc.

Not all of our music is strictly ‘classical’. We may stray a little, but we strive to make all of our selections ‘classy’.

We offer tips on proper ‘symphony etiquette’ and even some selections that are a bit light-hearted and fun aimed at a younger audience. Those pieces will be so designated, and might be a good way to introduce kids to a world of music that they might not have been exposed to or think of as old and ‘stuffy’.

A full symphony will run as long as it will. We don’t want to cut a symphony short. However, we also include some shorter pieces that we try to keep under fifteen minutes in length. You can sample each and hopefully find one or more that pleases you.

We hope that you enjoy our Sunday selections.

This Week’s Feature Comes To Us Thanks To ursel doran.

Yuja Wang – Brahms Piano Concerto No.1 in d minor, Op.15

The most looked forward to Cathedral to worship all the music on a Sunday!!

Many thanks to all for the selections, all of them for sure.

Here is a longish piece that is a favorite in an often-used location.

This Next Piece Comes To Us Thanks To Hardscrabble Farmer.

Emmanuel

Hard to believe it’s been three years, but what an amazing amount of music has been curated for our benefit over that time. Sundays are always a little bit slower for us and I try and catch the entire selection while I’m in that mode. It makes the day no matter what kind of mix and it brings back memories of listening to my father listen to classical music when I was young.

Great effort, deeply appreciated and always looked forward to in our home.

Thanks and many more years to come!

This Next Piece Comes To Us Thanks To Former ‘Classic Music Mafioso’ Austrian Peter.

Panzerlied (Battle of the Bulge with english intro)

“Boys. Too many boys. The illusion. The hope that there is one more chance. That is the illusion.” and 80 years later nothing has changed. Row on with good grammar too!

“Canon” de Pachelbel par Wynton Marsalis (LFR Présente!)

Speaking of the Marsalis clan, there are black classical fans and musicians. Here’s Wynton Marsalis playing Pachelbel’s Canon in D:

Julian Joseph – Samuel Coleridge Taylor (Deep River)

There are also black classical composers.

Samuel Coleridge Taylor (Brit):

There are more, plus many of the finest opera singers, and several jazz musicians have been fans and students of classical. Western Civ is based in due process and individuality. So many blacks are a problem – mostly to their own. But if the West is so good, let’s discriminate – in the best way possible. Due process. One at a time.

As Thomas Sowell has quipped, slavery couldn’t ruin the black family, but .gov has.

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor – Romance in G for violin and orchestra

W.A. Mozart – Concerto for Flute and Harp KV 299 (2nd movement)

Since repeats are acceptable, because they’re usually so good, the first offering below features prominently in the movie Amadeus.

With this particular movement, note the beauty and talent of the very young harpist,

Ms. Alisa Sadikova. She nails it perfectly. Beautifully. Watch the movie, too. Highly recommended.

On the second one, it’s a rare bird that can appreciate the vocals only, BUT… the story behind Allegri’s Miserere in the BBC documentary might educate a few who can acquire an appreciation for the creativity and scale of the notes in the music.

Mozart later featured prominently in bringing forward this music to the masses, after the Pope at the time only allowed it to be played in a certain place, at a certain time. {The Sistine Chapel, only during Lent, IIRC}

Wolfgang, while in attendance as a young man, was so enamored with it, he advanced it, by memorizing the score upon hearing it, then going home to write it down
Astounding.

Easter will soon be upon us. During the Good Friday prior, I can’t think of a better environment to catch a cast of vocalists performing Miserere Me, inside a cathedral with dynamic sound acoustics. The notes attained are cause for hair raising and goose flesh.

Thank You Admin, Steve, and Nkit, for carrying the torch with such efforts. A noble cause.

Perhaps those comments on the tail of Sunday Funnies four, five years back was good.

The Story of Allegri’s Miserere – BBC Four – Sacred Music

The Next Two Come To Us Thanks To A love Song version.

The Friends of Mr.Cairo (Emotional Cut) – Jon & Vangelis

Jon & Vangelis – State of Independence

Linda Ronstadt Rocks! – Tumbling Dice & You’re No Good, Atlanta 1977

The YouTube video linked to above for Linda Ronstadt’s live version of Blue Bayou was recorded at a concert in Atlanta in December 1977. The description for the video linked to above doesn’t have that information, but the link below has most or all of that concert, which includes Blue Bayou, and it has the information about when and where it was recorded. I was never particularly fond of her studio recording of Blue Bayou, but this live version, which I discovered about 6 or 7 years ago, is fantastic.
Whoever her producer was during that time period should be charged with crimes against humanity. Her studio version is just average, but she hits it out of the park with this live version. She could definitely sing. Dailymotion.com also has this video and I think the sound quality on that website is slightly better.

The Next Two Come To Us Thanks To ursel doran.

Neil Diamond – America (Live At The Greek Theatre / 2012)

This is one of Neil Diamond’s superb performances of a huge favorite tune.

One more Neil Diamond that is really great.

Khatia Buniatishvili – Un Violon sur le Sable (ROYAN) – Rachmaninov Concerto n°2 – 2e mvt

Khatia the drop-dead gorgeous beauty does a short Rachmaninoff piece to soothe the soul mind and body!!

This Next One Comes To Us Thanks To Two if by sea.

That Funny Feeling — Bo Burnham (from “Inside”)

Here’s something my kid sent me.

Sort of gave me a perspective where his generations at but also revealed how they and us are being groomed towards indifference.

A Little Girl Plays For A Street Musician And Gets The Best Surprise In Return

Maybe the children here this day will remember and revive the culture if our world survives the coming cataclysm.

Many thanks to all the members of the “Hans-Sachs”-Choir and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Nuremberg who took up our idea enthusiastically and performed it so well at the Lorenzkirche in Nuremberg on the 14th of June 2014!” Ode an die Freude or “Ode to Joy” is best known for its use by Ludwig van Beethoven in the final (fourth) movement of his Ninth Symphony, completed in 1824.

Arvo Pärt – Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, Tõnu Kaljuste | Elbphilharmonie

Te Deum is a setting of the Latin Te Deum text, also known as the Ambrosian Hymn attributed to Saints Ambrose, Augustine, and Hilary, by Estonian-born composer Arvo Pärt, commissioned by the Westdeutscher Rundfunk in Cologne, Germany, in 1984. Dedicated to the late Alfred Schlee of Universal Edition, the WDR Broadcast Choir premiered the Te Deum under the direction of conductor Dennis Russell Davies on January 19, 1985. The Te Deum plays an important role in the services of many Christian denominations, including the Paraklesis (Moleben) of Thanksgiving in the Eastern Orthodox Church.

On an ECM records leaflet, Pärt wrote that the Te Deum text has “immutable truths”, reminding him of the “immeasurable serenity imparted by a mountain panorama.” His composition sought to communicate a mood “that could be infinite in time—out of the flow of infinity. I had to draw this music gently out of silence and emptiness.”

The Latin text of the Te Deum is made up of 29 lines of verse, each of which is the subject of one section of Pärt’s composition. These 29 sections are not considered movements in the sense of traditional choral works because they are not separated by silences or pauses. Each line of text is introduced as plainsong before its augmentation in either a choral or instrumental texture. Although each of the piece’s 29 sections follow this pattern, they function differently from the movements of traditional choral works because they are not punctuated by silences or pauses. With the notable exception of three silences, each section of the Te Deum flows directly into the succeeding one, with the wind-harp drone often serving as part of the sonic bridge between.

Well,in my ongoing belief that Bach and his ilk are just Van Halen without Marshall stacks I put up symphony and Mettalica. The band is playing full amps and yet orchestra can still be heard.

I know for some classical and metal do not mix but I have seen stranger things!

And here’s an ‘interpretation’ that I’ve liked for a long time … Walter Carlos’ ‘Sonic Seasonings’ …

You need to turn up the volume in the beginning because of the quiet natural sounds, as with your video …

彝族舞曲 琵琶 Pipa | Dance of Yi Tribe |Zhuxi Wang 王竹夕

Composer: Wang Huiran (1965)
One of the top ten famous Chinese pipa songs, it describes the charming night scene of the Yijia village and the happy scene of people singing and dancing. This is one of the first few pieces of music I learned at the beginning of my piano study. I have always been very touched by her melody, and I always think it is one of the most successful works in modern pipa creation. More than 20 years later, I re-interpreted the dance music of the Yi nationality, and it was a completely different perception. I recalled the interesting stories and warm scenes when I was a child and often played it to my family – to my dearest grandpa

Thanks for your posts, too … there’s a certain ‘exotic’ quality to some of the music you post … I suppose it’s partly due to the different tonic scale compared with ours in the West …

Keep up the good work …

Great comment AA.
Cultivate encouragement.
Inspire others for a true endeavor toward the greater good.
Carry on, Sir, the torch that has been passed to you by Nkit, and welcomed by Steve, in the effort to see that S.M.C. continues to flourish.
Your contributions help.
Often in ways we may never be fully aware of.
Torches act as lights, and allow others to see, learn, understand, and enjoy.

Here’s an interesting headline from LA:

Why This LA Metro Station Cranked Up the Classical Music

Metro cued up the classical music as part of a public safety pilot program at the troubled Metro Westlake/MacArthur Park station.

“The idea is to create an atmosphere that is comfortable for spending short amounts of time transiting through our station, but not conducive to hours-long loitering. We are monitoring the volume of the music, as well as customer feedback.”

Metro said reported crime has dropped 20 percent since the program began. Emergency calls were down 75 percent, the agency said.

Many thanks for this week’s grand selection guys. ““Boys. Too many boys. The illusion. The hope that there is one more chance. That is the illusion.” and 80 years later nothing has changed.”

I always enjoy looking back, and listening to your wonderful music while I put together more financial crap for Tuesday! Our banker-boys should not be in charge of tanks (oops I mean banks). My good friend John Rubino gave me a great insight into the dwarf’s thinking. 6 mins of stunning idiocy!: https://rubino.substack.com/p/morons-we-should-know-janet-yellen
