It does insofar as preserving our culture and our history and our choice to be ‘excellent’ (whatever that means) … it means having acceptable standards and not just being lazy and illiterate.
Those wanting to be illiterate can go apply to be teachers in NYC schools — they’ve eliminated the literacy test there … i.e., you don’t have to be able to read and write in English anymore.
