Poland is a lesson in treachery. Polish aristocracy and nobles were often in the pay of foriegn governments like Russia, Germany and Austria. The result, Poland disappeared from the map twice in history. The king was often not Polish but hired from a foriegn country so had little power, and in the Sem (legislative body) only one member veto would kill any proposed law.
The basic causes leading to the three successive partitions (1772, 1793, 1795) that eliminated Poland from the map were the decay and the internal disunity of Poland and the emergence of its neighbors, Russia and Prussia, as leading European powers.
